Lore that I made up on the spot: This takes place five years after SMO, and Mario has died. Cappy is so depressed that he just wants to relive his old memories to the point that he hallucinates Mario. Cappy, now thinking that Mario had secretly survived, goes through all the old kingdoms that they once went through together and collecting all the same moons that they once had.

The only thing that would make the mod even better is if Mario is put in the skeleton outfit in the very beginning. Then Cappy is legitimately carrying around his skeleton and hallucinating the entire time xD

In the festival, no one recognized Cappy for who he actually was and didn't let him participate in the festival.

i think the reason cappy didn’t just do this in the base game is because he’s (for lack of a better word) cowardly, you see him run away from mario when they meet in the base game, mario helped cappy have the confidence to go save his sister, so i guess in this mod we just have a hyper confident cappy being haunted by the ghost of mario who wants to see this cap guy save the princess of the mushroom kingdom and his sister, following this idea the cappy that you see get taken by klepto that can’t be interacted with is the metaphorical remnant of the timid boy cappy once was

Theory: mario died, and possesed the body of cappy. This would explain mario floating above cappy, and it would also explain him becoming visible and dancing with "cappy" during the moon animation.

Ignoring the mafia storyline and treating this as a diffrent timeline my take on the story is: After mario dies from bowser cappy finds his dead body and right before he dies to save his life cappy absorbs his soul to maybe somehow later revive him but because of that all of marios memorys combine with cappys giving him trauma. Then cappy posses marios cap and promises to save peach now while he has his memories. Over his journey he discovers more and more about mario posses new hats and learn new tricks. One of those tricks being projecting marios ghost for just a second to talk with people or press buttons. He also brings marios dead body with him and at the end he realises he cant do it himself so he gives mario life as an undead skeleton and then cappy revives mario and both of them live happily.

Cappy wasted so much time bringing Mario along in the base game. Bro could've soloed the entire thing without him 🤦🏻‍♂️

5 years ago Mario and Cappy saved Peach and Tiara in the event known as Mario Odyssey. 2 years ago Mario passed away in a tragic accident. It took everyone by surprise, the beloved hero gone in a moment. While the people were heartbroken but moved on, those closest to him had a much harder time. Especially Cappy. Perhaps it was partly self inflicted guilt for the event. Or just trauma from the events surrounding it. He wasnt able to accept what happened to Mario. After investigation cleared Cappy for Marios death (hauling arround a corpse pretendung they are alive is very implicating afterall.) He eventually regressed back to some of the joyus times he had. When he met Mario. None of the events are happening... although some people, friends of Mario and Cappy are trying to play along, in hopes this might be what he needs to finally let go. Akwardly pretending like it was happening again. In a place of compassion even Bowser played along. Although the Broodals and other bosses were complete fabrications by Cappy's denial. Some things didnt work out at all, like the festival... no one was comfortable with Cappy bringing Marios body through that.
