The song was written by Russian band Kino (lyrics by Viktor Tsoi) in 1990 and had a very mellow style. I have read that it was a political commentary about having free will and freedom. A new arrangement of the song performed by Polina Gagarina was utilized in a 2015 Ukrainian-Russian movie about WW2, Battle for Sevastopol. Polina's performance here from the Singer 2019 was an even more intense (and excellent!) arrangement of the song. It's particularly poignant right now given the current Russian-Ukrainian war. The song title/use of the symbol "cuckoo" is due to the folk belief that the length of a cuckoo bird's song can predict how long a man has to live.
