In this episode, Dani discusses the Simpson Stopper or Mrycianthes fragrans. This Florida native is threatened in the wild and should be planted more often. With beautiful foliage and edible fruit, this plant is quite a wonderful jewel to add to your Florida landscape.

Neat plant. I don't think I have the right situation for it, but I bet the birds love it.

Thanks for the great information. I am definitely going to plant one in my yard. This will get me started on my plan. I saw them at Little Red Wagon nursery some months ago.

Neat plant bet the birds enjoy that fruit. May try to get one of these just for the birds. Do you know is it easy to propagate through cuttings?

I know they grow really easily from seed, but I have not tried to grow them from cuttings. The Florida Wildflower Foundation recommends seeds or air layering for propagation. I'll try experimenting with cuttings in the spring and report back.

I have a dozen I put it in a couple of years ago but I really have not seen them thrive unfortunately. The one primarily in the shade that I put in first actually looks the worst. Any tips? a couple of months ago I fed them with a 6/6/6. I’m in Orlando and we’ve had a fairly wet winter. I’ve also done some supplemental watering just on a drip but try to let the soil dry in the top couple of inches between waterings.

Hello and thank you so much for watching! I am so sorry to hear you are having trouble with your Simpson Stoppers. It is incredibly difficult to diagnose your specific situation without being there to see their specific living arrangement. My advice would be to reach out to either your local gardening extension services office. They work out of UF, but have offices in all major counties. You could also contact your local native plant nursery. The two that come to mind are the lovely folks at Green Isle gardens and Lukas nursery. You could also check out the FANN.org website to locate nurseries and other native plant experts in your area.
