Nedna was one of the best storylines in modern Simpsons. Its a shame it got cut so short. They surprisingly complimented each other very well, being opposite who synergize well with each other, Edna being a rather liberal, open character who can push Ned out of his comfort zone while Ned being a source for stability for Edna and being much more dedicated and secure in what he wants than Skinner. I also liked Ednas role as step-mother for Rod & Todd. It could have been a good opportunity to bring them more into the foreground and interact more with the cast, while it was also a good dynamic in which Edna could more consistently show her very strong maternal, nuturing side which she can't play out with Bart as often because thats mostly Marges role for him and they operated more as foils and frienemies to each other.

I'd of loved it too to see Skinner stand up to his mothers control, finally become a man to take charge and decides things for himself- such cut apron ties with his mother- marry and had a life with Edna, but the writers for the simpsons do not seem to like changing the status quo of their characters much and if they do its only for a very short time, often just 1 episode, thus it seems that no matter what happens- Skinner is a mama's boy who no matter what - stays for the most part- under the thumb of his mother. Most Simpson characters even if they have been allowed to progress somewhat over the seasons- still fundamentally retain their main aspects of their personality/characters and circumstances, be they positive or negative and even if addressed at times, (such as when Homer addresses his problems with alcohol or comes into money) by the end of the episode- they are right back to what and/or where they were, nothing really significantly or perminantly changes with the characters and their circumstances.

Contrasting with Hoover, Edna is a true teacher, a broken, drunk one that works in one of the worst schools of the country with the worst possible director and coworkers. Edna is the only one that WANTS to be and certainly is really good at what she does. Why Edna cares so much about Bart? Let's see it this way. Bart is the ultimate example of everything a kid shouldn't be. For someone who just loves to be a teacher, it's a test of skill and patience. Also. Edna hates Bart. But mostly because of how extreme his bad behaviour is. Failing in helping Bart for her is failing as a teacher. Because a primary school teacher goal is not just giving you assignments and homework and call it a day. It's being like another parent. Teach you to behave to listen, to be a future upstanding citizen, and to be honest, Even Nelson has more chances to improve than Bart. Also... Bart is the rotten apple in the classroom. If something goes awry, Probably it was Bart's fault, If Nelson does something , people won't follow him, he's just a lone wolf. So it makes sense she puts more focus on him than anyone else. She is an exemplary teacher in hell itself
@ToonReel0015 жыл бұрын
Edna is a cynical teacher like all the others in the school, but there's substance to WHY so to make her sympathetic, you see what she puts up with in terms of Bart and Nelson, and in spite of some clawing attempts to try and care and be diligent to her students, her spirit is largely crushed. Compare to Hoover who has the school's only A student and at worst Ralph to attend to, or the kindergarten teacher who broke Bart's enthusiasm to begin with, the motivation and conflict isn't there, they're just already cynical jerks who somehow got stuck teaching little snot noses they hate. It's probably also why Edna doesn't quite mirror Patty and Selma since Edna always has those moments of TRYING to understand Bart, while Patty and Selma just tautologically hate Homer, with or without provocation. She is meant to be sympathetic for putting up with a Simpson family member opposed to just being an antagonist.

@@ToonReel001 I think the interesting part was also, while she would often butt heads with Bart, she also had this very aloof attitude that also allowed her to actually get along well with the trouble makers casually. Like, her relationship with Bart really felt like them being frienemies. I think this added alot of wholesomeness to their relationship, compared to how Hoover is just cynical all the time. She would always stick up to Bart if necessary and in return, Bart did genuinly care for her and would feel bad if he messed something up. It also made Nelsons righteous bully shtick work quite well, because I could see him respecting somebody like Edna while she as the same time can appreciate the sentiment.

The thing about Edna Krabbaple that i loved most was the fact that even though she seemed so apathetic towards life and all it's dealings she still held out hope for a better future for herself. You could even see it with her interactions with Bart. While most of the time they were the "Hero" Vs the "Villain" one antagonizing the other for one reason or another. They also had those moments where they showed that as a teacher she truly cared about Bart and his actions. They show it multiple times in the show throughout the years that those two characters have a deep seeded love and respect for one another that shows they were more then teacher and student. It shows that Edna and Bart were honest to goodness friends. It was her relationship with Bart in that sense that showed despite being beaten down by her failings she always had an anchor in Bart to keep her relatively grounded so she could move passed it. Bart was Edna's longest and 2nd strongest relationship with a man in the entire series. We'll miss you Marsha, You really brought Edna K. to life in a way that no one else could ever hope to match.

Note: I haven't seen much past season 11 or so. Maybe if I had kept watching, I would feel differently. I really do think that Edna's sweetest episode was "Bart gets an F". Specifically the last 5 to 10 minutes after Bart has "failed" and is going to repeat 4th grade. Edna goes to the old standard of a pessimistic attitude of, "I know. It's going to be hell for me too." After she sees that Bart actually cared though after she sees that he is weeping and that he had put forth actual effort, Edna doesn't simply give him a pass out of pity but instead uses the rules available to assess his knowledge and pass him on the merit of his work. It breaks her out of a flat, one-dimensional characterization and gives her real humanity. You can hear it in the inflection of her voice. Edna _could have_ been a cruel character, purposefully failing Bart out of spite due to their personal feud, or she could have been a pushover passing him out of pity. Instead, she acted as a committed and genuine teacher would act - she used the skills and knowledge she had in order to help her student succeed. She taught Bart that if you put in the effort, your work can pay off and you can achieve your goal, even if it's in an unconventional way. Bart had the motivation to pass due to her actions, and Bart _did_ pass directly as a result of her assessment. It wasn't something that Edna was required to do, and certainly wasn't something that she was expected to do. She did it because she cared and because she was a genuinely good teacher. It's the antithesis of what being a good teacher is, and it humanized Edna as a character in a way that very few other things could.

Ooh, I've been looking forward to this. Gonna try not to get sad. Edna has always been one of my favorite Simpsons characters because of how sincerely and realistically she was generally written, and as you said in your Bart the Lover review, she really was important to the series. I always appreciated that she wasn't just a stereotypical idealized strict busybody teacher caricature and how she was played more as an earnest look into teaching as a profession. A lot of shows are content to write teachers who're just cartoonish ruler-swinging busybodies, or just exist to act as opposition to a rambunctious child protagonist, so I really liked how Edna was always a more genuine character, especially in the context of the show's rather caricature driven cast. I'd place Marcia Wallace's death up there with Phil Hartman's in terms of how drastically it affected the show. Rest in peace indeed. As for a character for the next Simpsons Histories, I think Kirk Van Houten could be interesting, given the series' weirdly consistent foreshadowing of him and Luanne's divorce leading into A Milhouse Divided (Plus, he's been in pictured in a few Simpsons Histories episodes whenever you show potential candidates for the next episode at the end, so it'd be neat to see that payoff). Great work as always. (PS this is Teal Opal, the guy who commented on a lot of your videos before, on a new account. I know it doesn't matter but I wanted to remain a fan regardless of moving channels. Cheers.)

So you break up and you get engaged with someone else. It does seem real, the usual cliché when two people after so much trouble finally marry and live happily ever after is quite boring, we saw stuff like that too many times. This was brand new, something different in the show. Unfortunately her voice actress passed away, and they lost this chance to make the Simpsons be great again. I really think that could have been a great storyline for Edna, Ned, Bart, Rod, Todd and even Marge, Homer and Lisa. They could have invented so many stories about them. That could have been great, it's a shame that they couldn't go on with that :/ Before the series ends I just want to see one single thing: Flanders engaged with Rachel Jordan (The Christian singer from the episode in which Maude died). I do think Edna and Skinner should have been the way to go. it could have culminated in development for Skinner, who could finally become independent of his mother while still remaining a total pushover to Etna. It's not like the show is afraid of changing the status quo on occasion - Maude's death and the van Houtens' divorce (then subsequent remarriage) shows that. That said, Nedna had a lot of potential when it came to her relationship with Bart, the Simpson family, and Springfield as a whole (given the Flanders' very special relationship with all the above, as former foster parent, rival, and town weirdo respectively). It's just unfortunate that most of that potential was lost due to Wallace's untimely death.

I agree. Edna and skinner would have been the perfect opportunity to finally let skinner grow. To finally get out of the clutches of her mother and be free with the woman he loved while having him grow up mentally to become the appropriate man for Edna. They were so well written it honestly makes me sad how much of a lost opportunity it was in terms of character growth for both.

this was not the first time a voice actor's passing lead to a character's retirement. when Phil Hartman died his characters (Troy Mclure and Lionel Hutz) were retired. the cast got along really well and I believe it is that reason that a death retires a character. they want to preserve these beloved characters as a shining testament to their fallen friend.

I always thought that skinner deserved a happy relationship as well, considering that he went through a lot in the past and is generally a sort of troubled character. But then again it makes sense to me that he don't want to or can't commit to her for that very reason and that she doesn't want to wait. Her being with Flanders also makes some sense in my eyes, he probably really wanted a mother for Rod & Todd and she wanted a stable relationship and for that reason they are a good match, besides the things mentioned in the video. Certainly makes more sense then Comicbook Guy or Moe.

Edna and Skinner all the way. Her relationship with Flanders felt very arbitrary and didn't have all that much depth to it, at least I didn't care for it. In my mind the Simpsons canon ends around seasons 14/15 though, so I was naturally a bit predisposed to dislike it.
@CorazonMexica6 жыл бұрын
In my mind seasons 1-8 are my personal canon. Someone said once that the "Grade School Confidential" episode could have worked as a final episode for both Skinner and Krabappel, and ending their story arcs with a happy/heartwarming note, and I have to say I agree with him/her. Even if I never really cared about shipping in general, season 8 is a good season to stop IMO.

Idk, I actually liked Nedna. As The Simpsons status quo changes go, it was actually one of the stronger choices to me, the two had a nice dynamic and felt good for each other. I still think Skedna was a better pairing and had more depth to it, but I enjoyed the concept of Nedna and I loved that after all the jokes about Edna being a promiscuous character, she got a chance to stand up for herself and say, no you don’t get to judge me. I felt Nedna gave Edna a different chance to shine and was a good capper to her character arc, however short it ended up being.
