Years ago this little girl fought like a lion against the abuses in the church. And lost her career. Respect Sinead!

most poignant and important comment ever. as usual, media, society, and world as a whole feel the need to vilify, disqualify, and discredit strong females.
@jas227 жыл бұрын
she did not lose her career due to that. Sinead has so many demons of her own that she has battled. She's even been somewhat penitent about it, as i heard in an interview with Stern a few years back.
@lorddio996 жыл бұрын
She does have large personal demons. Still an incredible talent, inspirational.
@mincoc6 жыл бұрын
i don't think she lost her career at all, she is much better singer today and, what is more important, much better person. For being a succesful you don't need to sell, just to sing and make emotions burst, ans she is just excellent doing it, Apart from that, thanks to her fight againts abuses, she is respected and taken in consideration by good people who love

what kind of abuses? what she's exactly revolted against? Im asking because I discovered her recently

I remember seeing her on her first tour in 1987. She came out on stage, a tiny 20 year old woman with a shaved head in blue jeans, white t-shirt and a black leather jacket. She looked nervous but as soon as she started singing Jackie she took command of that stage for the entirety of the show. I haven't seen too many artists with this much stage presence. Her vocal range, even here, is nothing less than impressive.

My God, you are so incredibly spot on.....yes yes yes to all u said. I've always felt that this whole album was special and this is one of two tracks that I consider life-changing. Her voice. I feel my heart burst with every phrase and her spirit is indeed so special. She's so horribly underrated. I'm hanging on every word. I vividly remember the first time I was exposed to her music was through this song, I,an angsty teenager as most if not all of them are,was hanging out at a friends place in the summer of '87. Watching a canadian music program (Good Rockin' Tonight) and Sinead O'Connor-Troy came on...well..I can admit in my 13 yr old ignorance I didn't understand the phenomenon on the screen,possibly even dismissed it as "too weird for me"...but now,jeezus. It's arguably the best debut album of all time,cuts so deep in so many places,brilliantly written,the pathos and conviction etc etc.

This is my favorite of her songs (and it's been running through my head all day, as it often does). I love the way it starts with a description of such youthful innocence ("We were SO young then we thought everything we could POSSIBLY do was right"--exactly, like pretty much all of us as young people) and works its way through the relationship of which she sings in all its stages until the raging, magnificent "You're still a liar." The entire album still stuns me after all these years--aside from Sinead's incomparable voice (and how ridiculously beautiful she was), the songs and the arrangements are just so complex and sophisticated and evocative. (And I would have torn that picture in half too, and felt perfectly justified. No one wanted to hear the truth then, or even now, but she was willing to destroy her career to make her point.)

I " ll remember it And Dublin in a rainstorm And sitting in the long grass in summer Keeping warm I'll remember it Every restless night We were so young then We thought that everything we could possibly do was right Then we moved stolen from our very eyes And I wondered where you went to Tell me when did the light die You will rise You'll return The Phoenix from the flame You will learn You will rise You'll return Being what you are There is no other Troy For you to burn And I never meant to hurt you I swear I didn't mean those things I said I never meant to do that to you Next time I'll keep my hands to myself instead Oh, does she love you? What do you want to do? Does she need you like I do? Do you love her? Is she good for you? Does she hold you like I do? Do you want me? Should I leave? I know you're always telling me that you love me Just sometimes I wonder if I should believe Oh, I love you God, I love you I'd kill a dragon for you, I'll die But I will rise And I will return The Phoenix from the flame I have learned I will rise And you'll see me return Being what I am There is no other Troy For me to burn And you should've left the light on You should've left the light on Then I wouldn't have tried and you'd never have known And I wouldn't have pulled you tighter No, I wouldn't have pulled you close I wouldn't have screamed, "No, I can't let you go" If the door wasn't closed No, I wouldn't have pulled you to me No, I wouldn't have kissed your face You wouldn't have begged me to hold you if we hadn't been there in the first place Oh, but I know you wanted me to be there, oh, oh, oh Every look that you threw told me so But you should've left the light on You should've left the light on And the flames burned away But you're still spitting fire Make no difference what you say You're still a liar You're still a liar You're still a liar!!

I was fortunate enough to see Sinead live at the Albert Hall. Her stage presence - solitary - in a pair of jeans and a T-shirt, without any musical accompaniment, or backing singers, was phenomenal! A treasured memory. (I expect you've been reunited with your son now, Sinead; that's what your soul wanted and God granted. R.I.P)
@jamesdeansghost55317 жыл бұрын
Say what you want about her some of you. My guess is you weren't there from '87-'91. Sure, she came in like a raging fire that burned out too quickly but for a short time there was nothing like her. Maybe you had to be there in '87 when she shook up the music world with a stunning debut album unlike anything at that time. Saw her only once, about twelve years after "Lion", as a second tier opening act for Lilith Fair. By that time the fire was almost completely out as she barely responded to a crowd that couldn't have cared less of her previous stature and accomplishments. The 1988 performance of this song at Dominion Theater alone is testament to the star power and charisma she once possessed as she stood there like a Joan Of Arc mythic figure slaying the audience with just one song. So glad I was there in the beginning to experience this amazing artist at her peak.
@amphetaminelogic70067 жыл бұрын
Completely agreed on the Joan of Arc part. I Was there in 1988 Pinkpop - there is a video for that. The sheer anger has completely gone from the voice, but its still enough to give me wet eyes. Still own Lion/Cobra album - its a classic in its own league.
