It’s pronounced Shin-aid. The song is not about a guy named Troy btw. Huge Sinead fan and love seeing her on your channel. This song is off her debut album, The Lion & The Cobra, which she wrote between the ages of 15-19. She is from Ireland. Incredible singer with a lot of incredible songs and albums. Incomparable and under appreciated IMO. This album was nominated for a few Grammy’s and has been called by some critics as one of the best debut albums ever. Important artist worth listening to. ❤️

This is a relationship song, probably inspired by her on-again-off-again relationship with a fella named Jon. And I think the song frames the roller coaster of on-again-off-again relationships brilliantly.

It's probably a combination. I mean both about a failed romantic relationship and about her abusive mother. "You should have left the light on" refers to the times when her mother locked her out of the house so that she had to spend the night in the yard, I believe being under the age of ten. When the last light in the house eventually went out, the last hope of being let back in vanished.

Such a powerful performance!! Omg!! I saw her on her first tour, a 17 year old girl from Ireland with a shaved head wearing a grey army flight suit. She seemed so nervous on stage, but everyone including me adored her. Unfortunately the music press and media tore her apart and destroyed her career only a few years later for her vicious anti-Catholic, anti-pope rant on live television. I knew she was from northern Ireland, the anger and bitterness that people felt towards an oppressive church and the abusive aristocracy of the British Commonwealth was a reality, people were being gunned down in the streets by police for resisting, and anyone trying to help those who were shot, were also shot. They would even shoot them as they were running away. So, for all of those back then who decided they were supposed to despise Sinead O Conner because of a poorly judged message strategy, just because the news media did, shame on you people!! The career of one of the greatest female rock vocalists of all time was ruined by hate.

shi•nayd is how it’s pronounced in the English language it’s written in the Irish language. She is a Irish and from Dublin. As she was an activist. Even though Pop radio in the United States turned on her, she was a star all over the world. She’s a national treasure in Ireland. If this is a festival one 1988 that means it’s her first album was released. She was new to the scene she was like 18 or 19 years old I would also suggest you watch a documentary called nothing compares it was released last year. It’s from 1988 to the controversial ripping up at the popes on SNL in 1992. The Catholic Church had been committing atrocities in Ireland for decades, and she refused to be quiet. Ireland is a very different country today at modern religion does not have a hold on it. Ireland was traditionally really the poorest country in Europe. It really is a damn tragedy that more of her live performances aren't reacted to. Nothing Compares 2 U is great and all, but seeing people almost exclusively watching that video does get a bit tiresome. This woman burnt an extremely promising career to the ground for a point of principle, and a very admirable one at that, which is something I have the utmost respect for. I won't go so far as to say that the world owes her an apology, because she really didn't communicate her message in a way that was readily understandable to the masses, but I daresay a good chunk of the press and the music industry (not to mention the clergy) ought to feel ashamed of themselves.

Sinead O'Connor is the queen bee... A girl, a guitar and talent... Not 30 people on stage dancing and grinding in glitter and gold crap.... No hurricane fans on stage... The 80s music to the 2000s music is just appalling what people except as "good"
