This live version is so under rated. She delivers so much raw emotion and movement in this performance, and it doesn’t even have to be perfect.

Yes! Im confused about perfection. She is raw emotion, so much better than whatever perfection is.

That "tone" you don't care for is called keening. It's an Irish technique. You hear it a lot with her and the Cranberries Delores O'Riordan.

Prince wrote a great song but with Sinead got hold of it she took it to a whole new level. You can feel the pain and emotion when she sings it. Love her version and her voice in it

Warning this might trigger some people. This is a emotional song for her When Sinéad cried In the video, it was a real tear. In the Rolling Stone Top 500 songs issue, she said, "I didn't intend for that moment to happen, but when it did, I thought, 'I should let this happen.'" In her memoir Rememberings, O'Connor explained that the lyric that triggered the tear was: All the flowers that you planted mama In the back yard All died when you went away Her mother, who was abusive toward her, died in a car accident in 1985 when Sinéad was 18. That day, she removed the photo of Pope John Paul II from her mother's bedroom wall; this was the same photo she famously tore up on Saturday Night Live. Sinéad O’Connor has revealed her late mother Marie was so “evil” that she stripped the young star naked as a child and regularly kicked her in her private parts in an attempt to damage her reproductive organs. The 54-year-old describes her fear on the day her father moved out of the family home and her mother forced her and her siblings into the garden hut and locked them out of the house when Sinead was eight years old. “I knelt on the ground in front of the gable wall and wailed up to the landing window to get her to let us into the house when it got dark,” she recalls. Peace out.

That’s tough. My single parent alcoholic father was incredibly abusive towards me from the age of around 10. It never stopped he’s dead now and can’t find a tear for him. I don’t know. Great live performance

Her story is pretty amazing actually. There is a great doco out there recently plus she released an autobiography. She has had a very, very tough life. And continues to as her son commited suicide last year. This is one of the few times where I recommend you watch the original music video.

I actually love the froggy tone that you’re talking about. Maybe because I’ve listen to other singers, who have gotten me used to it. As long as you’ve got control over it, when she does, it’s cool. It’s making her performance really unique as well! Especially since it’s not how she sings it in the recording, or at least it’s not as blatant.

Sinead is a force of nature, you need to hear her singing her own stuff. The song Troy would be a great start. The stuff you said was weird, is her using traditional Irish folk techniques (she's Irish), you need to listen to some Irish music to understand this.

That part of her vocal was apart of her style. The Irish yodel. You would get a bette feel of it with the songs on The Lion and The Cobra album. It is part of what made her her when she was unknown to everyone in the US except college students

I can really appreciate your take on her tone(s) as it's not a sound we hear much here in the USA. She is Irish and if you listen to many Irish singers (the females for obvious reasons), you will hear a lot of the stylings she uses in this. I sometimes wince a little when hearing the way some EU artists tend to swallow the vowels in that way that sort of scrunches up the vocal cords that way you were talking about but I have come to love it and truly appreciate the skill involved.

Sinead is irish, thats no.1 on why she sings weird. They have their own musical scale sometimes. No. 2, there wasnt any kind of auto tune back then, a lot of artists were just a bit off tune as part of their style: morrissey, cranberries, David Bowie. But the most significant thing is that she was primarly a punk artist. If you look at her records her first 2 are pure punk but she was pulled into pop consistently. Her managers and everyone around her continuously tried to shift her into being Madonna or Cyndi Lauper, but by some miracle of her strenght she kept true to her style and only did a few pop songs, which she did majestically anyway. And.. in other news... she had serious mental health issues, abandonment, abuse, etc, from her own family. Its just people cant really imagiine what it would be like to be an inmensely talented 18 year old woman in the 80s with no one to protect her. The sharks almost destroyed her. She is a survirvor most of all, and her voice is so unique and amazing, even if she doesnt have auto tune available like most people today, or great equipment for a concert in Chile, where is so dry, and its 90 degrees mid day, and 30 degrees at night..

Weird is NOT a good discription dude! This lady is Irish & it's probably her beautiful accent you hear! You're not a known vocalist at all, so what sounds good or not to you doesn't mean anything as the world doesn't revolve around your ears or bias taste, you have a problem mate! Sinead has sung & performed with & in front of the Biggest Names in the Industry! She is also internationally big! You wouldn't even be able to believe let alone know about!
