Universal Mother is my all time favourite album. It contains all emotions, Love, Anger, Fear, Gentleness, Strength & Hatred. There never has and never will be anyone as good as Sinead.

You are such a gorgeous man , I’m listening April 2nd 2024. I love this song written by Irish man Phil Coulter about his Downs Syndrome son. I’m definitely going to listen into you again. Greetings from Ireland 🇮🇪

Originally released in 1970 by the Dubliners, it was written by Phil Coulter who first son was born with Down's Syndrome. Sinead released this version of the song in 1994. Sinead's powerful emotional vocals are full of sadness and the piano accompaniment is so beautiful. Such a special song that demonstrates the love for a child regardless of health issues. Harri you are such a wonderful man, your passion for people is highly admirable. ❤️ You are just a lovely human being. Great reaction Harri. Thanks Harri and Paul. 👏👏 Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦

A beautiful song I am sure it was written by Phil Coulter as a sort of tribute to his son who as folks said was special needs. The late great Luke Kelly convinced Phil Coulter to allow him to record it but I thin with conditions... Lukes version is a stunning piece of work... Great video and reaction... There is no shame etc for a man to be moved by such a piece of work.. also on another note I find it sad that people (including myself) judged Sinead for her vocal outbursts etc and other issues and disregarded her music work.. Folks will find an equally great and awesome work throughout all her work..

@@shamnet Thank you for understanding Sinead. She was a maelstrom of emotions. Aren't we all. She was publicly outspoken about things that mattered. Sometimes contradictory, but again aren't we all. I tend to privately squabble with people in my life. I'd be destroyed if I ever went public with my lowest behaviour. She was truly a fantastic woman. A fantastic human being.

So many of her songs pluck - or pierce - the heart(strings). The most beautiful and emotive voice. She 'lived' every song she sang.

Sinead was highly sensitive, that why the sorrows of this life finally became too overwhelming for her. I hadn't heard this song before but her sweet voice really brought it home. RIP to her and her son Shane. I hope that they have found peace and she can feel the love that so many have for her

Probably my favorite Sinead performance - she shows how a great singer can take the emotion that the composer must have felt and making the listener feel every bit of it without the listener even having first-hand experience.

The whole Universal Mother album is so emotional and beautiful. It’s her masterpiece in my book. I read somewhere that George Michael ranked it amongst his favorite albums, but he could only listen to it a few times because it did the same to him as this song did to you. This song and A Perfect Indian from the same album never fail to make me shed some tears.

This song was written by Phil Coulter who is a hugely popular songwriter and performer and when I say popular, he has 23 platinum discs and has written at least two Eurovision Song Contest winners. But this is the most personal of his songs because it is written about his son, Paul. Some versions of the story say that he was his oldest child, some his second and he appears to have been born with Downs Syndrome, possibly with a congenital heart defect. Whatever the true version is, Paul died when he was four. Phil wrote of his son, "I even found it hard to lift a baby from his cot and give him a cuddle, God forgive me," but he eventually did bond with him and wrote this song about him which was first recorded by the legendary Luke Kelly of the Dubliners. The song was recorded by Sinead O'Connor for her album, "Universal Mother" and it is a testament to his regard for her that he plays the piano accompaniment for this. I've always felt that this was a particularly emotional album for Sinead and a lot of the songs involve children, she was always led by her feelings, of course. With this song, you almost feel that it's her own, she pours so much of herself into it. It's not as well known as many of her other songs but she may well have felt, like Luke Kelly, that to perform it too often would cheapen it. This is a personal bit, so don't read it. When my wife was pregnant with our first child she was obsessed with this album. Our baby, Olivia was a beautiful child but a week after she was born we had to take her into A and E where she was diagnosed with heart problems and rushed to the specialist hospital in Leicester. She recovered and after a couple of weeks came back home with us. She seemed far better than anyone had expected but she had to return for corrective surgery in a few weeks more. The operation took longer than expected but we were confident with the surgical team and knew that she was a fighter who would get through. She didn't and we had to sit with her on the life support system praying for her to recover but it was too much for her heart and she died. She was 13 weeks old. The funeral was at the Catholic Church in Middlesbrough where we had married a year and a half before. I remember carrying her coffin in, it was so light that one person could easily do it. We chose a song from this album to be played. It was "My Darling Child" which was my wife's favourite. We don't listen to it anymore. The funeral was shortly after Sinead had torn up the picture of the Pope, but we were still allowed to play it. I've always been grateful for that.
