In 1936 it was reported that Vilma was 'heartbroken' when Buddy got an MGM contract without her. She recovered enough to dance at a Shubert charity show for Pres. Roosevelt's birthday in 1937*, but soon quit to teach classes at Pacific Palisades. By 1956 she had been married and divorced twice with a son by each husband. Buddy's popularity had revived by playing Fess Parker's pal on 'Davy Crockett', and he spoke of bringing Vilma back for a touring double act. This did not come off. According to a YT commenter who knew Vilma in later life, the siblings fell out and she would badmouth Buddy. Sad. *Partnered by Chuck Walters, who would fare better in Tinseltown as choreographer and director.

Well, I suppose it matters what you're looking for. Eleanor was a great tap dancer, but a rather bland and average actress otherwise. Why her career as a star was relatively a short one. Buddy and his sister show far more personality in this, as well as pretty talented dancing moves...

@@bloodgrss Bland? I admit she wasn't a strong actress but her screen presence was anything but bland. I demand an apology immediately.

Eleanor Powell and the Ebsens were no strangers when this dance routine was filmed in 1935. In June 1934 they performed separately with Abe Lyman’s orchestra at the Capitol Theatre in New York in the live stage show that accompanied the Clark Gable - Myrna Loy film, “Men in White.” Advertisements for the show billed Vilma and Buddy Ebsen above Eleanor Powell. However, the “Variety” critic who reviewed the show thought the Ebsens’ “ingenuous youthfulness” winning, but suggested they might have gotten even better applause from the audience if they had performed before Miss Powell rather than after, stating, “On strict tapology she smears them.” Of Powell’s performance, the critic wrote, “Eleanor Powell gets in the first and some of the hardest licks with a friendly audience. They liked her and were far from being reluctant to tell her so. She did three bits and then had to hush them with a speech.” More trivia: “Broadway Melody of 1936” premiered at the Capitol Theatre in September 1935, and Powell and Abe Lyman were briefly engaged to be married around that time.

Eleanor later denied that she and Abe were more than the proverbial 'just good friends'. Blanche Powell liked him but felt her daughter should fulfil her film potential before marrying. Ellie agreed, so Abe was on the outs. Walter Winchell, an early booster of Ellie, claimed that Abe had given her an engagement ring with rubies and diamonds worth $5,000 (half a million In 2020 terms). Powell and Lyman certainly had an affectionate friendship, which may be commemorated in 'Born to Dance'. When their theatrical or nightclub engagements in NYC were finished, they would wander through Central Park in the wee small hours- you could do so safely then- and Ellie would improvise dances for Lyman. Same as Nora does for Ted in 'Easy to Love'.

Thank you so much for the fantastic info. I had the good fortune to see BM o 1936 on a big screen at UCLA in the 80's & was stunned by the sheer exuberance & talents of both Buddy & Velma, and of course, the pure joyous talent that is Eleanor Powell.

@@edwinhsu2902 If only there were more opportunities to see these cinematic masterpieces the way their makers intended them to be seen. On little screens they have an impact, but on the 40-foot silver screen, in the dark, they are overwhelming.

Buddy Ebsen was one of the dancers whom Disney hired. His movements were a guide for animators, who drew from the live-action footage. In his later MGM musical with Eleanor Powell, 'Broadway Melody of 1938', Ebsen wore a Donald Duck shirt. Years later his career revived when Walt hired him to play Davy Crockett's buddy in the TV series.
