Watched an early screening. Incredibly good movie, with the best 'fictional band' we've seen in years (I suppose since Linklater's The School of Rock).

Hi Mark - I'm glad you loved this.ONCE was almost perfect within it's genre. That was almost a film that couldn't have been made. BEGIN AGAIN is a really good film. But, with SING STREET, John Carney gets back to his Irish Roots. It's not ONCE, but it's really, really good.I think going back to Dublin made a difference. How this film has made less than 3 Million in the US, I don't understand. Also, critics often call Carney's films musicals. They're not. They are music films. It's the difference between A HARD DAY'S NIGHT and SINGING IN THE RAIN.

Lucky enough to see this a month ago in a screening - it's brilliant, so glad Mark agrees! Full gamut of emotion & experience in there and some really beautiful moments as well as laughs & brilliant 80s pop pastiches. Glad he acknowledged son of rambow too, definitely the strongest parallel I thought.

Best part of the movie is when the main character is heartbroken because his girl drove off in the yuppie's convertible, music blaring, and his brother asks him what music it was. Genesis, he says. To which his brother replies: He won't be a problem. No woman can truly love a man who listens to Phil Collins.

Once is a great small film. It achieves what it set out to do almost perfectly. It's a film that could have taken so many wrong turns, and become overly sentimental or sappy, like many Hollywood films do. John Carney seems to have a way of manipulating us, without insulting our intelligence. If you loved ONCE, you will also love this film. Best wishes, Ted

@bluesjazznotes9436
@bluesjazznotes9436 8 жыл бұрын
My loss! Not really Arianhod, like I said apart from Jazz/Soul, and Classical, I have no tolerance for rock pop and the rest, as for Joe Jackson, I honestly don't know who is and I had to look him up, from what I've seen so far he sounds nothing like a Soul singer, that's probably why I've never heard of him if we're talking about the same guy that is, thanks for the info anyway.
@arianrhodhyde7482
@arianrhodhyde7482 8 жыл бұрын
+sam soul afaik he turned jazzier later? Don't know if that's helpful. Yeah, it's probably not a great film for you if you don't like rock or pop. The Cure? It's a good "Irish" film as well, in that the setting's fairly important to the plot.
@bluesjazznotes9436
@bluesjazznotes9436 8 жыл бұрын
Thanks again Arianrhod, I remember I was at the movies when the trailer come up on the screen, I thought yes I want to watch this until the kid says we need to start a band and the "music" started, I told myself there goes my movie, I'll check out the Cure looks but I don't think it's Irish from what I've read it's an American film released back in 1995.
@arianrhodhyde7482
@arianrhodhyde7482 8 жыл бұрын
+sam soul wait i meant the *band* the cure, as in, are they too pop for u? Sorry for the confusion, I realise now that was a bit ambiguous. For an actual Irish film, The Commitments is probably your film, about a fella trying to start an r&b/soul band in Dublin. Lot of swearing, though.
