For me, the way he sang it made it feel like he was making it into a light hearted "immigration" into nextdoor France... Bearing arms instead of a valid visa/passport 🛂. And he was the flag bearer. It's probably deliberately left obscure which part of France he was in, because he literally marked the "Front" of the „Kaisersreich“, the realm within which the German Kaiser holds authority. In other words, he's a professional boundary mover, seeking to extend Germany's frontier at France's expense (not sure why it's always France for most of these songs I've heard, but maybe it was just what was fashionable in Germany in WW1: trying to turn French soil into German soil by force of arms 🤷🏻‍♂️🤷🏻‍♂️🤷🏻‍♂️)

They were light infantrymen, part of the infantry, but distinct from the regular infantry due to the tasks they performed on a battlefield. They were skirmishers or sharpshooters, they harrased the enemy or screened the bodies of heavier troops. On the battlefield they enjoyed much more independence than regular infantry, they could act on their own initiative contrary to the regular infantrymen who strictly followed the orders. Jagers were recruited from people who already had experience with riffles - foresters and landowners. There were also mounted jagers in the German Imperial Army, but not as numerous as foot jagers. Those 2 formations are equivalent to napoleonic 'chausseurs a pied' i 'chausseurs a cheval'
