Some Singapore firms have begun drawing up plans to deepen investments in Johor, as both countries are exploring a new Special Economic Zone. They say facilitating more exchanges of goods and talent could help to solve some manpower and cost pressures. But challenges, like the uncertainty of details of the SEZ and transfer of people and goods, stand in the way. Clara Lee reports.

But Singaporeans can buy cheaper products.Growth in Singapore is limited.Singaporean companies will become more competitive if they operate some of thear firms in Johor.Singaporeans also can live work in Johor with close to Singaporean salaries and Malaysian Cost of living.

Should have the SEZ, so these businesses can earn money from or through Singapore while paying peanuts for Malaysian manpower. Its a win-win solution, for Malaysia and these businesses. Singapore just needs to open the gates and let it happen so the bleeding can start. Hope the Singapore Parliamentarians are 'smart' enough to play the country out for their own pockets like how it often happens in Malaysia. Anyway, LKY is dead so don't worry about anyone coming after you, yeah.

cheaper rent, manpower, utilities mean more profits for the business owners but are the malaysians and singaporeans willing to take a pay cut working there.

I believe that if Singapore and Johor Bahru going to create a economy zone it should be like very similar to Uae. Free zones. Also creating a new form corporate, Jurisdiction something like the Johor Bahru economy, Free Zone etc. Allows the foreign investors to register their company is 100% foreign ownership no nominee Director is required just cost US$100 to register the company that would be great which includes a Visa or like an add-on visa cost US$1000 etc

who will dictate the do's and don'ts in SEZ? surely SG firms are against bumi rules of 51% ownership, and Jakim poling their hands on every activity happening in this zone. More questions than answers and politicians will abuse theirs powers to sabotage this idea.

Building the LRT just solve part of the problem. JB city centre does not have the infrastructure to cope with the influx of human traffic. The roads and traffic conditions around the city centre need to be improved. There are also not enough Grab drivers or taxis to cope with the demand. We are already having a hard time calling Grab during the weekends and the fares easily double or more during weekends. I waited one hour for a Grab last Friday evening at Komtar. I dread to think what will happen when the LRT starts operation three years down the road!

World most expensive country to buy a car but ride hailing & taxi ride fare are way very low comparing to other countries like Japan, Australia, London, Swiss & the list continues. Have anyone ever thought about these; driver daily overhead such as rental/lease/instalment, petrol, parking, car depreciation, maintenance, road-tax, car insurance, personal insurance, auto accident excess, CPF/Medisave & many more.... Everything are getting expensive but fare most of the time are still pathetic. For driver, more daily trips plus longer working hours.

It takes hours to cross over jb. Both govt should solve the congestion. How to expect businessman or prof to travel with lot time spent in congestion. Proper approach should develop to ease the traffic. Esp limit in tourists to travel daily. I don't it will benefit the businesses if this traffic congestion is not resolved

Flip-flop politics and unstable government policies can be a risk. But having a hinterland close to home can be a opportunity to expand the SG economy further, and a win-win strategy for both SG and JB in the long run. Some SG locals should be open to some traveling and supporting both locations.
@Puiz4Life
@Puiz4Life 7 ай бұрын
Companies moving nearer to RTS or shops in JB will increase prices to profit more from the Singaporeans going to JB. It may price out locals in rents for living there. SG companies may downsize due and set up a company in Malaysia or even completely uproot to Malaysia leaving Singaporeans out of a job. Singaporeans will go to JB to shop leaving local SG retailers unable to compete with prices. Easier travels means more Malaysians may choose to commute and work in Singapore leaving JB or companies in other areas out of a productive workforce. Trade and co operation with a cheaper neighbour is always a double edge sword. Alas its the story of capitalism the race to the bottom. Hopefully it balances it out. There is always a winner and a loser in these type of situations.
