Hi Gauri, Well done that you moved to Berlin (I was born there but live in the US). It is a great city and work life balance is an important part of German society. You also will have at least 20 days paid vacation with extra vacation money on top and practically "unlimited" paid sick time. No cost for going to the doctor besides your part of the health insurance monthly pay and, of course, it is by law that your company cannot make you work more than 8 hours a day;-) So even if you switch to another company in Germany, you will have pretty much the same work life balance. Enjoy and have fun, Martin

For me as a German it is always fascinating to hear that other countries do work more than we do, however we are still pretty competitive. I hope we can keep our work culture.

Yeah exactly! I guess compared to other european cities i have visited, germany still seems like the most "competitive" but compared to SEA, it's chill 😂

Everytime when I see that people identify themselves solely with their job title, my immediate thought is that they do not really do any fun activities outside of their work. Didn't realize, that Germany has a really great work/life balance. I am feeling kinda greatful now. But I would still prefer a 6 hour day instead of a 8 hour day 😄

I loved this video so much and watched till the end. I am also currently a Singaporean who has a similar situation with you as well! I am currently under a 3 year SGIS bond and would be moving to Germany eventually with my girlfriend who is German living in Bavaria :) I am just impressed how you transitioned so well into a new country, were there any difficulties and challenges you faced?

also when you mentioned that you wanted to achieve a slightly chiller work life balance, I was shocked because you literally spoke my mind about the financially driven society we live here in Singapore and working in Europe in general gives you more time for yourself which something that means a lot to me.

Aww so nice to hear that my experiences resonated with yours! There were definitely challenges like language and some culture shocks, think i'll make a video emphasising on that very soon!

Was there a reason why you didn't think you wanted to work in a more "chill" country (i.e. when you were considering barcelona)? hehe just asking bc you also mentioned that you were looking for a less hustle-like culture~ loved the video btw! So organised and you gave such good insights 🥺

Aww thanks Faw!! I know i would be super demotivated in a too chill environment cuz it would feel like i am not making a difference (as fast as i would want)

Nice Video, however its more skewed towards Berlin perhaps that's an expression on how you feel, nevertheless it does help me in getting a more solid view on the transition. Two question, moving from Singapore to Berlin, How did you feel about the weather? I believe Berlin has 6 months of crazy winters, also, was that a factor to be considered? Also, What about Language outside work, would you not require to speak german outside work a lot, something which is easy in Singapore due to English being common? Thanks for your help!

thanks! the weather was definitely painful to get used to in the beginning. The cold was fine but i wasn't used to the little sunlight but it got better after my first winter. As for language, ya i did have to pick up basic german to communicate outside of work but if you live in an area with a lot of expats (like some parts of berlin), then you could even survive pretty well with little to no knowledge of the language!

JFTR, you only have to pay a lot of taxes if you earn a lot of money, so mainly well earners complain about that. You are obviously matching that category. Working hours - no it can't be much different, even within another company in Germany bc working hours are regulated by law, ie (constantly reoccurring) extra time has to be paid even better.
