Singer 431g - The ultimate Vintage Singer Sewing Machine?

The Singer 431g was the final evolution of the 400 series.
The 431g boasted the ability to chain stitch and had a removable bed revealing a free arm.
Made in Germany from 1964 to 1964, the 431g was capable of not only a zig zag stitch, but a huge array of embroidery stitches using built in cams and additional pattern disks.
Added to that, this aluminium, gear driven, rotary hook machine had Singer's slant shank design, to make the stitching point easier to see.
Is this the ultimate vintage sewing machine?

Beautiful Machine from a time when Singer was still making high-Quality Sewing Machines. Nothing like the plastic stuff they sell these days. I love the sound of those old machines when stitching.

I’ve never seen this machine before. How neat that it has both lock stitch and chain stitch ability! Chain stitches are great for sewing knits and active wear. Thank you for sharing this machine with us!

I love my 431g. It's quite small and quiet and very versatile. I think it has a very elegant appearance.

Keep returning to watch your videos since I started sewing over two years ago These machines have a soul while my plastic wonders I use are purely mercenary Have developed respect for these machines proudly made for the sewer to enjoy and keep for their grandchildren I have 1972 Pfaff and early nineties Elna overlocker with a steel shell built like tank and keep them lubed and loved My other two a computer and mechanical singers Oiling the machines keep them quieter and happier to perform Anyway keep up your magnificent mellow presentations they are really relaxing to watch

I have the 301, 401, and 403, and they’re all wonderful but I’d trade them for the 431G and its free arm capabilities. Looks like a complete machine.

On my wish list! Passed on a local one a year ago..$350USD...couldn't justify that much money when my 403a is still a workhorse

I'm curious about how certain families of singers differ. I had never heard of 411G... until about a week ago... Grabbed it for less than $50US. A day later, another appeared, and couldn't resist for slightly over $50US, and that left me curious... I take it that the difference between 411g and 431g is the free arm? And the difference between 401 and both 431 and 411g is the chainstitch? And more broadly curious about the elite similar machines. I have three 201 machines all rescues. What other machines have interchangeable parts to the 201? It seems so easy to overlook great machines because they have unusual model numbers. I'm sure I got the two 411g cheaper that going rate for 401, merely because they are a little more unusual.

You did well getting those machines at that price! There's not much shares any components with the 201 except maybe the 206, which is a rarer zig zag version or the 1200, which is a 201 with a knee lift.

That is a beautiful machine. I have never sewn on a Singer. Mom had a Westinghouse, then a White which I no longer have. I've been very happy with my Kenmore machines but this if I ever see one of these I may try it! Your video was excellent, especially the close up views of how to thread it. So many videos don't show threading up close and the vintage manuals aren't always very detailed either. I have subscribed and look forward to more videos.

@@CurioByBSpokeDesigns Goodnight! I contacted the seller today and I bought the Singer 431g. The sewing machine is in perfect condition, there are no oxidized parts, all accessories are in perfect condition. It looks like it came out of the factory - it must have been forgotten in some office, house, flat or shop! It's unbelievable! I have to confess that I just didn't like the color - it looks like guava! I managed to download the manual, but I will need to translate it. Thank you for your help!👍

Still confused about how to insert the bobbin. I must be doing something wrong. I thought I had it in the same way as you and as the book shows but it doesn't get picked up when I turn the wheel to move the needle down.

make sure you have threaded the needle the right way and that you are turning the handwheel towards you.

@@CurioByBSpokeDesigns There are certainly worse things in life than rescuing these old gems. They'll never be made to this quality again, sadly. I've got into the old White Company rotary machines lately. They make as good a straight stitch as the 221 and 301. I have a White model 77MG and am eyeing a Domestic rotary model 153. White Company also made Kenmore sewing machines for Sears Roebuck until the late 1950's. Their model numbers all start with 117... for example 117.959. They're driven by a rubber pulley mounted on the motor shaft behind the hand wheel. (no belt needed) They usually develop a flat spot because they've sat for so many years but it's easily remedied with a new pulley. ... Yes. Always click the 🔔 on my favorite channels. with the right needles and thread, you probably could. But I would suggest for serious heavy work, you'd be better with an industrial machine.

Your best bet for an easy to find (and find parts for) machine that can handle upholstery (straight stitch only) is the Singer model 15 or one of the many copies of that machine. I prefer a hand cranked machine for punching power, but as well as the original domestic motor the model 15 can also use an industrial motor.

I have this machine and have used it for many years. Unfortunately the foot pedal has burnt out. I haven't had any luck with locating another. Any suggestions?

Thanks for this great video. I was given this fabulous machine, but unfortunately, the table part with all those bits and pieces is missing, as well as the carry case and manual 😑 So I don't know much about how to use the machine to its capacity...not that I'm much of a sewer, mind you! 😁

Facebook groups for the 431 have a manual you can download for free. Cams and feet from any of the 400 series should fit. Just keep your eyes peeled!

They are very good machines. They take a non standard size needle but can take regular needles with a modified bobbin case. I’ll have some videos coming up on these machines.

I wonder, why it was only produced for such a short amount of time. All the features of the 401 plus the chainstitch seems like it should have been a popular design.

@@CurioByBSpokeDesigns Ah, I see! Which one is that then? Because I'm thinking, that the 431G might be an even better fit for me, than the 401A. Not so much because of the chain stitch, but because it has the free arm. I didn't think about this before....but having no free arm might be an annoyance, when depending on only one machine (and I don't have room for more). Although having a perfectly even surface on the table with nothing for the fabric to catch on, must be very nice. But then, I don't have room for a dedicated sewing machine table, anyway, so that point is kinda moot.

@@CurioByBSpokeDesigns There just happens to be a 431G for sale for 150€ close to my in-laws, which we will visit over Christmas. So I gotta make up my mind quickly, since the seller doesn't want to ship the machine 😆. But, of course, I gotta figure in having to (probably) buy a buttonhole attachment and stuff like that, which might end up adding a lot of cost. The 401A is for sale in my area for 100€. Oh well. Thanks for the advice, though!
