Simon and Garfunkel sang this in the 60’s, their version was a warning to the world, This version sounds like rage that no one listened to the warning when first given.

I believe that is the very reason why David Draiman chose this song to put his powerful voice and his emotions into it. I was a child of the '60s and the original meant a lot to me but now that I'm reaching 70 years old and seeing how the world is it means so much more.

So David Draiman, the lead singer, is actually classically trained as a cantor, someone who sings in synagogue. If you haven't seen the making of this song, I'd suggest you watch it. As many have said already, Paul Simon wrote this song and he and Art sang it for their generation as a warning, asking them to react a certain way. Over the years, the song became little more than a meme. Then, Disturbed came along and was like "Hey, remember this, f***ers? Wake up!" Truly amazing

@@Kodi093 LOL! Only if it was directed at Star Trek (the original series, circa 1966). Do you know what kind of technology they had back in the 60s (when the lyrics were written)? I mean, it's possible that Disturbed intended to have that meaning, but I doubt Simon and Garfunkel were concerned about nonexistent futuristic sci-fi technologies (unless they felt that the faulty crappy microwaves back then were a huge threat). You basically had a radio, and maybe a TV at home at the time this song originally debuted (and maybe not even a color TV at that - too lazy to compare when the song was released versus when color TVs started being sold versus then color broadcasts from the THREE network stations that you had a choice of started airing). If anything, it MIGHT have been a commentary on how society was changing its moral standards for the worse and telling us to have our voices heard ( not too sure, as I don't know about S&G background and views on various topics and agendas).

I love watching Shawn's reactions as he gets shocked by how well David (The Lead Singer for Disturbed) really drops into the nice grit/angered voice for this cover. I'm a huge fan of Disturbed and recently started watching some reacts to their music. And Mel definitely was caught up in the Story and Journey for the song :) Disturbed is very much a band for the angry and hurt of the world. Their a rock/metal band that turn anger, pain, and frustration and give it a voice. I think their really great to listen to when I need to get out such frustration or just want something uplifting cause getting that out can be empowering. If you want another good suggestion of theirs, they recently reunited for tours about 2 years ago (They took a break, but they've been on the scene since the late late 90s) I highly recommend their song "A Reason to Fight" a song about how to tackle drug/alcohol abuse and depression. It has a similar tempo to this one as well as another powerful message.

You're correct in your observation. Consider the lyrics, "People talking without speaking", "People hearing without listening". What, exactly, is it we're doing right now ? We're talking without speaking. Paul Simon saw the coming of what is today. In the digital age, no one speaks any more. We would rather send text messages, or post our feelings on social media. We don't talk to each other about our problems, we just air our dirty laundry on Facebook so we can get mad when someone leaves a negative comment on our post. People, put down your cell phones, push yourself out from under your computer desk. Get up, walk around, go open the front door of your home and step outside. Don't walk through the rest of your life staring down at your hands. Look up !!! See what's directly in front of you. Look around and behold all the beauty that surrounds you day after day. You never know what you might be missing by looking down at your hands. I'm out of time, and out of breath. God bless you all !!!

Not sure I agree with your reasoning of the song. There is another video out of it by them that shows pictures & video of the Vietnam war. Don’t believe the electronic age was even close when this was written back in 1964. I know, I was there. I believe, as others have said, the war was a major conflict at the time. Some people were for it, others weren’t. People wouldn’t talk about it when it was happening because of all the conflict. No ticket tape parade for soldiers returning as they did for previous wars. The ”flash of the neon light separating the night” was about bombs going off at night. “Hello darkness” about the loneliness each soldier felt.

Okay, I'll bite because you both seemed to feel the gravity of this song. It was originally written by Simon and Garfunkel in the early '60's and they sang it sort of as a whisper to society that we were on the wrong path as a society. Disturbed is a metal band who did this cover in a way to shout that same message. My guess is that they see that many people never got the original message. Disturbed is an amazing hard rock, metal group that took a Simon and Garfunkel song and took us on a possibility of a world gone dark. It's at the end of 2020 now, and every time I hear this warning to the world, it becomes more silent. We are in a dark country deeply divided and a world right there with us. Praying for world peace to God, not the neon god they've created. Disturbed is awesome and amazing and I thank them for bringing this warning to us again. It may be too late for many, but I'm listening and hearing the message loud and clear. It's NOT too late to fight back for our Country and World to be at PEACE. God Bless us ALL.

I am someone who does not go out of my way to listen to hip-hop or rap. I have grown up with country and rock music. That being said... I have grown up with Disturbed's music throughout the years. When I first heard this cover, I was bawling my eyes out. Now, I love watching people's reactions to it. The fact that someone who is with a completely different genre of music loving this, and appreciating it, brings tears of happiness to my eyes as well. Thank you for sharing this reaction, and God bless.

To use motorcycles as an analogy, the Fat Bob and the Gold Wing are both touring bikes, but are you going to call a Gold Wing a Harley? No, because it's made by Honda, same situation applies here. This song was written by a 21 year old Paul Simon back in 1963 and performed by the group Simon and Garfunkel. Dave Draiman of the Heavy Metal band Disturbed resurrected this song with new life. Notice how this song has no hook or chorus. The words have a very deep meaning filled with similes and metaphors describing silence. The very silence that Paul Simon heard the day, and the days that followed the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. This version of the song starts the first verse as a deep melodic whisper with a light piano accompaniment. The video shows a wrecked piano and guitar on the ground. In my mind, symbolizing the instruments that are being reclaimed from the earth. The next verse, the voice turned from a whisper to a singing voice as the guitar joins the piano while the video shows a man reclaiming the guitar. A tympani and viola is also seen by the end of this verse, signaling what is to come. You can almost visualize a man walking down a narrow street paved with cobble stone ‘neath (underneath) the “halo” of a street light turning up his collar. The stab of a neon light may have been the shot that killed the president. As the visuals introduce mor instruments the song gets more and mor intense and each verse gets another instrument to accompany the singer. I wish I could write more, I’ve seen many video reaction from singers, voice coaches etc. they all are very moved as you two were. It’s late and my vision ain’t what it used to be, Please forgive the grammatical and spelling errors. Good night And GOD Bless
