Yes, I have tried and failed miserably with any modern buttonholer. The vintage ones are my favourite.

You need a different version (there is a high shank version by Greist) or the Professional Buttonholer. There is a model that will work for you, but not the slant shank version.

Is the Quantam Slant shank? If so, then you will need to drop the feed dogs or cover them. Once you have covered the feed dogs, then attach the buttonholer and it should do the trick. Set the zigzag to a small zigzag.

It should work but you may have trouble with large buttonholes. Standard ones can work well.

If the issue with the needle plate is that the two prongs are hitting the feed dogs, simply push the prongs in..

There are a few models. The slant and short shank versions. The biggest challenge is to get the correct base plate for the 400/500 series machines.

If you mean without the buttonholer attachment (the big item)?, then yes. Use the classic 4-step buttonhole method of: 1) mark the buttonhole location and length, 2) make a bar tack at the top of the buttonhole by selecting 0 stitch length and maximum zigzag width to make a few passes up to 5, 3) sew down the right or left hand side of the buttonhole stitch length maybe around 15 zigzag width 2 but sewing on the left and right hand side -- your manual will explain the cam settings [alternate one side set to straight stitch and the other set to zigzag with width 2] 3) do bar tack same as point 1 4) sew on the right or left hand side but with the reverse set to 15 rather than forward 15 stitches per inch. If you mean without the plate, you could remove the feed dogs and sew with the foot plate in normal position -- not in raised position -- to give a flat area to sew on.

That should be an interesting challenge to explain. I will see if I can figure out the best way to explain it. A video will certainly make it easier, but there are two ways. One way is the mark length of the buttonhole use the right hand zigzag and sew down one side, sew the bartak (0 stitch length full width), then sew in reverse up the other side with the zigzag -- settings are shown on the inside of the cam hatch cover. If using the buttonholer, then you use the longest setting and sew down one side, then lift the buttonholder whilst keeping the fabric from shifting, and move the buttonholer to the start of the zigzag on the same side. This may not be all that helpful, so I will try to create a video soon.

@@jamesrogers991 mine does not sit level with my slant o matic. Am I missing something? Also the feed dogs push up on the throat plate that I have installed.
