Michael Bolton saw this performance and called it "virtuoso performance" and invited her to his concert in Korea for a duet. and they sung "prayer" & "lean on me" PS. This stage was won the 'Best TV show award' at the Banff International Media Festival.

She arranges every cover herself. She also is the master behind the orchestra and the backing vocals. She directs them in practice so they come in how SHE wants them to. She was trained by one of the best. Seth Riggs, who was Michael Jackson’s vocal coach. He was her main vocal coach. So she traveled to the US to take lessons from him.

please react to Sohyang singing Easy On Me last year (2023) outdoors under a huge bridge. It looks much less rehearsed but to my non trained ears it really showcases the effortless sonic beauty of her onpoint musical instincts. Sohyang has said in an interview that this performance before Michael Bolton was the most pleasing to her personally up to that point in her career because Michael Bolton is one of her absolutely favourite singers, and because he was so effusive in his praise for her she was satisfied that she and her team could produce similarly world class songs and performances. And hey, Michael Bolton told her she was a "vocal virtuoso" after the concert and invited her to join him for the rest of his South Korean tour. How do you beat that? Well, Michael Bolton can offer to take you on an entirely new world tour making you the featured guest--and that is _exactly_ what he did! Unfortunately, or not, the two could not make their schedules match no matter how hard they tried and the tour never materialized. This was actually fairly depressing for Sohyang because she really wanted to go BIG TIME in the music business at that exact moment but everything seemed to conspire against her. Pneumonia problems would crop up and this has been a chronic problem for Sohyang. She would later recognize this as God's way of preventing her from getting caught up in the North American and European music industry that would have been destructive to her character at that time. Sohyang is humble enough and courageous enough to confess she had become so ambitious that she was an ugly person, short tempered with other people and not treating them with proper respect. I know, my jaw hit the floor when I read the interview too! Sohyang a _mean person?_ Say it ain't so! But we all have times where we are embarrassed at how we behaved and Sohyang is just a human being, like the rest of us. Two years later in 2016 Sohyang was almost ready to quit the entire music business because her health problems were so bad. Yet she had given her truly immortal performances of "Bridge Over Troubled Water," "Arirang Alone," "Everyone" and "I Have Nothing" only the previous year in 2015, and "The Prayer" and "Power Of Love" in 2014--songs _any_ diva who has ever walked the earth would _kill_ to have in their repertoire! So she plundered her bank account and took a trip to New York and Philadelphia. In the latter city Sohyang saw a quote from President Franklin Roosevelt where he had said in his inaugural address during the Great Depression of the 1930s that "We have nothing to fear but fear itself." This proved so inspirational for her that when she got back to South Korea she entered the "King of the Masked Singers" contest in 2017 and won it on six consecutive occasions! Still the pneumonia dogged her so badly she knew it was God's way of telling her she had to reassess why she had become a singer in the first place. And that was to sing to lift people's spirits who were going through hard times. In 2018 David Foster himself did eight concerts with her at Tokyo's Blue Note Club and it is thought he offered to be the producer for new recordings of her. But she had been really reconsidering her purpose in life and decided the Hollywood lifestyle was the last thing she truly wanted, and in 2020 she turned down a contract offer from Sony Music US, _the 2nd largest music corporation in the world!_ And there were many others before that going back a decade or so! Since then Sohyang has been resolute in her decision to stay away from the music "industry" and manage her own career for the purposes she had started it all with. I for one can't express how happy I am she has chosen the path she did because she is one of the most inspirational people I have ever come across in my entire life, and I know countless others feel exactly the same way. 👌😉💖💖💖 And here is what Michael Bolton told Sohyang after this performance. A little more context for the video includes the gentleman that is shown on camera several times watching the performance. That is Michael Bolton who made the song a 'second time hit' from the original sung by Bill Withers. The show had several singers that were being judged by Michael (and maybe others). Of course this performance won and he called So Hyang a virtuoso and invited her to go on a concert tour with him, which she eventually did I think, though much later. So Hyang did not sing publicly until she was 19, as she never thought she'd be a singer. Just wow! She is mostly self-taught but had some lessons with Seth Riggs (Michael Jackson's voice teacher) after she had been singing for some time. She practices her performances a hundred times before going on stage, but I think, like you mentioned, she probably leaves some room for her to do a bit of wandering in the moment (of that I am not sure but it seems so spontaneous). Of course, So Hyang says her voice is a gift from God. Who can argue? Because she had cancer and complications (I think hepatitis) from the treatments, she has had many bouts with pneumonia which threatened to end her singing life. She has vowed to sing for other's comfort and not for fame and fortune. I think she is the most fearless singer I have come across on the female side. The notes she hits are basically superhuman! LOL! I enjoyed your singing and your enthusiastic reaction. Now, you might be ready for So Hyang's DMC Festival (her in a dark blue dress) performance of 'I Have Nothing'. It is a one of a kind performance as most of hers truly are. I do not understand how she can be so good live even when practicing a hundred times!

Andrea, the other fans have given you lots of information, so let me summarize a couple of points: As you travel through the World of Sohyang, remember that she and her personal team do ALL of the arrangements (she arranges the music) for stage appearances (this staging won her an award). Several of the vocalists and musicians on stage here are semi-permanent members of her backup team (You will see them in other videos - they are superb). The gentleman highlighted in the video IS Michael Bolton. This concert was in his honor and included only his hit songs. There were many Korean Superstars that performed in it - the camera glimpsed several of them. You've given us two great reactions. Keep going. I have to mention the backing singers. If you get a chance take a listen concentrating on them. I think you will be surprised at what they do to uplift what she is doing. There is usually two to three harmonies that add so much to what she is singing. So did you catch that knee strike at the end when she finished her vocals? She often adds a leg kick, or a swinging of her leg like she is kicking the mean and hurtful things so many of us face every day. She is such a spiritual person and tremendously down to earth too. This is the second reaction video I see from you and very glad to have seen it today. Sohyang's vocal prowess has always drawn a lot of feedback from vocal experts who tend to focus on her technical dexterity and control. And there are plenty of regular folks whose interest in music is defined by personal preference yet can't help but be amazed by Sohyang's extraordinary display of musical feat. "Pre-programmed in her brain" is absolutely right, Andrea. So Hyang is one of a handful of singers (including, IMO, Angelina Jordan) with the confidence and ability to be improvised and emotional but at the same time completely understand where she is going. Her interaction with the choir and the instruments depends on her understanding at every moment where she is. It always amazes me when reactors see still shots of Michael Bolton in the audience, who made this song the hit that it is, they literally make no comment about the fact that he is there. It is just as if he is some "Joe" sitting in the audience. I can only assume that he was before their generation. Except that I also see it with older reactors.

Sohyang was never a child prodigy like say a Angelina Jordan. But if you go back to around 2012 when she started appearing on I am a singer 2 there is a marked improvement in her vocals. If you listen to her recent material you will see she is now at the peak of her immense vocal talent at 45 years old. Her ability to mix her registers will allow her to sing probably well into her sixties if she can keep pneumonia at bay.

There are so many well known artists at this show. Michael Bolton who I don't think you recognized, is who the camera pans to, this show was the Michael Bolton Special, so all the artists sang his songs/covers. Then there is a bunch of famous Korean singers there whose names I wont spell out as I think I would mess up.
