I get where you guys are coming from with feeling like there were too many runs in one part of the song. But, I think maybe the reason it works for me anyway is because I grew up in the southern United States, and Clark did too, and I knew that this interpretation of the song was meant to be gospel in nature. I even heard an interview with Clark after the fact where he said that the reason he loved the song so much was because it reminded him of his own Christianity (hence, the gospel style music that he grew up listening to), and that if there were any song he wanted to sing with Abbey, he knew it was this one. So her sound, so often full of those gospel types of runs, is really what connected her to the song for him. I can still understand wanting her to wait to let the momentum build up in the song first more, though.

In addition to the suggestions below, I would recommend his American Idol performances, It's a Man's Man's World first. I'm a Clark Beckham fan so it was fun watching this reaction and I agree about the beginning of the song. I thought I was the only one.

Clark Beckham (as mentioned before) has another gem called Tennessee Whiskey which is a masterpiece. He introduces another female singer who will blow you away. Her vocals are on par with or even better than Yebba (and I love me some Yebba). I'm not going to say her name. I would love for this to be a surprise. She doesn't look like how she actually sings. That's all the foreshadowing I'm dispensing. Please give it a look. I'm sure you'll both love it.

I totally agree...the guy came out of nowhere for me too but damn! He showed such tasteful restraint but made the best choices vocally as a lead in! It made Abbey sound like she over did it in comparison BUT when they took it to church? Holy Ghost party anybody LOL?! Thank you for sharing this 😍👌

I understand where you are coming from. Yebba can do so many tricks and runs that they just bleed out of her naturally. It didn't detract from the song for me but I do think this was well suited to Clark's voice. It is so unique and I loved him on American Idol. Yes, finally! Clark Beckham is a beast-as an instrumentalist, songwriter, and vocalist. I echo what the others have urged you: check out his cover of "Tennessee Whiskey" with Madison Ryan. And, actually, pretty much anything on his channel. As far as I'm concerned, Clark and Haley Reinhart are the 2 best things to come out of American Idol. Vastly underrated artists, for sure.

I have never heard of either of them but am about to search for Clark Beckham to learn about him. My taste is like yours, I would have been happier listening to just him. Thanks guys for the honesty.

Clark Beckham was a street performer in Nashville if I’m not mistaken. He made it to the finals of American Idol several years ago.

I was thinking the exact same thing. Abbey was a bit much in the beginning and I did not care for it, but later in the song when she channeled her inner Aretha Franklin, that was awesome. Everyone has opinions if people are mad at you for that they can unsubscribe. I will say this tho.... This is not Yebba's song. If Clark didnt steal the show then she really would have over done it. She was a feature so she played her part in my opinion. I also don't feel like you have to sacrifice your on style of singing or conform to another artist just to do a duet. Had she not given typical Yebba then she would've been boring (in my opinion). I don't think she over did it, I think your just trying to compare Clark's dynamics to hers and they are no where near the same. She started off gentle using runs and a light voice and then exploded with her falsettos and headvoice (range). Clark was suttle in the beginning by using rasp and a vibrato and then exploding with runs and his full voice. So their usage of dynamics were the same but there individual version of dynamics were totally different. Anyway... im still a fan! Lookin forward to your other reactions to Clark. 😁

the problem with yebba is that she's ''showing'' of to much. Its not pleasant to listen to in the long run, it just gets to much after a while.
