Dessi Stefanova, singer and leader of the London Bulgarian Choir, has a quite extraordinary voice. She sings in a Bulgarian folk style that has great power and unusual qualities. In this interview with Alex Julyan, she describes how she creates this remarkable sound. Perhaps you may even want to try some "twanging" yourself!
Created to support the Get Mouthy event at Wellcome Collection on 30 September 2011 where Dessi and the London Bulgarian Choir will be appearing www.wellcomecol...
Filmed at Wigmore Hall in London www.wigmore-hal...

I just discovered bulgarian singing for myself even though my dad is from Bulgaria. That part of my identity was never shown to me by my parents! :') I'm so proud to be bulgarian, and I am moved by the singing/choral tradition there

+Kate Lazar well Kate, there is a whole new world of a rich culture ahead of you to explore , be prepared to be overwhelmed because as you said it yourself it is going to resonate strongly with you and you haven't experienced its effects before.

I can't help but cry. The emotion I feel when she starts singing is too strong. Dessi, drop the choir for a while, just for a solo album, please! Just your voice and some "basic" instruments.

Wow! As a vocal music major I learned a great deal about using head voice and chest voice. To hear that Bulgarian folk music uses much more in chest voice is quite interesting. Now...to get my Bulgarian background to comply with that concept...after so many years of learning to sing in head voice. ;-) I would LOVE to take one of her classes if only to learn just one Bulgarian song from my grandmother's homeland.

I love Bulgarian folk music, and it's incredible watching her sing! The sounds she makes are so divine, and it's amazing that she's creating that with just her voice! Some people love classical symphony music, but nothing moves me as much as Bulgarian folk music does - I get chills! Thank you for sharing!

Also, the 'twang' voice she's referring to is often referred to as a 'pharyngeal' voice in the singing world. You can hear the same thing being talked about in videos by Brett Manning.

Nur die bulgarische Gesangskunst ( das so genannte Kehlkopfgesang= 'pharyngeal' voice ) ist einige HUNDERT Jahre alt. But : Only the Bulgarian singing art ( 'pharyngeal' voice) is several HUNDRED Years old. And Brett Manning is not the Originator of TWANG. Erst mal informieren und dann schreiben -First inform you and write later.
