After seeing a few video's of Singkil, yours is true to the orig. The Princess stayed in her regal demeanor not over doing, the 'slave girl' was in sinc with her moves, the Diwatas were great, The prince did a great job ( got bit by the bamboo couple times :-) The Costumes were subdued enough to identify the Princess and her position. There was an obvious attention to detail. From costume simplicity, to size of the group, the timing, and synchronicity. Sometimes simple is good. I thought your performance was great! IMHO

I'm just wondering. Since Singkil is a Maranaw dance, was the kris of the Prince designed according to Maranaw practice with the edge shaped like a spear? The kris of the Taosugs, who do not dance Singkil, has a heart shaped edge.

The warrior prince appears to be brandishing a wooden kris sword which lessened his dash and threat as contrast to the grace and beauty of the princess. I’ve seen performances of the singkil where the entrance of the prince is electric when he brandishes a real kris with its sharp curved blade glinting in the spotlight as he twirls it opposite the princess as they navigate thru the bamboo “forest”.

This is true to the original singkil which is a courtship dance. I love how gracefull and powerful the princess was and how she knows that all the cards are on her side. The music was just the bamboo clicking at the command of the princess and how delicate the slaves are with her. How the "damas" are proud that they are members of the court and joining the princess in her dance. Looking at potential warriors to be her partner. Just forgot the part where the two warriors battle it to death for the heart of the princess.

i remember seeing a longer version with 2 warriors fighting... i guess, they remove that part to shorten the performance... but this one is really good indeed.

One of the best versions I've seen - clean, uncluttered choreography, harmonious costume colors, and the dignified motions of the dancers from start to finish. Bravo!

+xiance galvez No, this dance reflects the identity of the Maranao people. Get your facts straight. Don't confuse the Maranao culture with the broader but richer Philippine culture, which is an amalgam of Eastern and Western influences.
@TheChenny73
@TheChenny73 7 жыл бұрын
Get your facts straight, she said BEFORE the Spaniards and Americans came so your "western influences" doesn't apply. Additionally, you would be hard pressed to prove her wrong. Were you around in the 1300 century? Is there a written history of this dance....NO not in the Philippines. So you don't know. Fact is this dance has been performed in the Philippine islands for hundreds of years and Maranao maybe the last ethnic group to actively perform it but that doesn't mean ANYTHING. This is actually a very popular dance performed by MANY groups in south east asia and most likely was performed all over the Philippines in similar fashions.

Singkil is a love story related or told through a dance. It is a cultural practice highly influenced by the epics of the native Maranaws in mainland Mindanao. The dance and its literary equivalent were already practiced by the Maranaws before they were converted to the Islamic faith!

Surprisingly, I really like this production. I enjoyed the clean sequence and the ample number of dancers on the stage. One can tell that the director and choreographer is a stickler when it comes to details, which is awesome and VERY essential! Congratulations! Oh, I'm happy to see a proper umbrella. ;-) Great job and congratulations!

I thought the story behind this Singkil is about a princess wandering in the forest and was eventually lost. She struggled against the danger in the forest, so with her attendants. I thought that crossing the intricate bamboo demonstrates her struggle against demons in the forest. finally, she was rescued by her prince who had been looking for her.
@windtalkershadow
@windtalkershadow 3 жыл бұрын
Actually, the princess (the female lead) had only one attendant - the one holding the parasol. The other ladies represent the #diwatas, or the forest guardians, who abducted her causing an earthquake to happen that felled the trees. The bamboos represent them, which the princess gracefully avoids. And yes, came the prince to the rescue, who led them out of the enchanted forest.

My school Danced this for Linggo ng Wika last year. And I was the youngest girl, because I was 11 and everyone else was in High school. But I was the only one with a glittering fan (made it myself), while everyone else had colored foil on theirs. And we were gonna do an Enterpretive Dance this year.. Today was the day actually.. But I got a Fever -_-. So I didn't go.

JUST SO YOU KNOW: The longest epic in the world is the Darangen Epic of the Meranaws in Lanao province. It is recorded in the Guiness World of Book Records. DARANGEN EPIC OF THE MARANAO the Maranao epic chant, the Darangen, was proclaimed as one of the Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity by the UNESCO on November 25, 2005. One of the lengthiest of the Philippine epics, the already recorded Darangen is composed of about 17 cycles composed in iambic tetrameter. Each cycle is independent of the others, if taken individually, but a study of the adventures and lives of the characters in the songs show that the cycles are connected to one another in a logical progression. The Darangen is a pre-islamic form of primarily oral literature, presently existing in an islamic context. Implications contained in the epic point to influences reaching as far west as india. The epic is the culmination of all these influences and the core culture of the Maranao. The traditional Maranao belief and value systems are founded on the truisms of the Darangen. The mythologies contained therein constitute the foundation of indigenous beliefs and value system. It is a body of traditions and functions as a societal lynchpin since it is a record of the way of the ancestors. The Darangen remains to be an important source of information regarding the Maranao value system, social etiquette, mythology and marriage customs and traditions. copypaste

Rose Piamonte study your history again, Philippines already in existence since 1521 when Magellan explored the islands, while Malaysia got formed only in 1960s, its most probably Malaysians were rogue people with Filipinos ancestors, that’s why they have similar culture to us, example is Sabah, a contested territory of Filipino Sultan of Sulu. so the later nation cannot have the original but only copies from an older nation.
