Running single brood box will save you $$ as you will only need to put varroa strips in a single box where the queen is laying. If you have less treatment going into the hive thats probably more friendly on the bees as a whole as well.

@@BeesBikinis Agreed. Run it through the table saw to give it a trim and make it a medium, a swarm trap or a feeding chamber or something.... Gotta preserve your history! PS - I'm just putting together my 1st 2 hives. and was led to believe you shouldn't paint the lips. Glad I caught this fact in time, Added "Paint the box lips" to the punch list for spring here in Central NY.

@@kamonreynolds Guess you have a point there, My sentimental equipment from over the years is getting to look like a technological Sanford & Son back lot. I have the "collectors" gene which makes it hard to get rid of anything which might someday be useful. Problem there is after a while you can't find anything when you need it and end up buying one anyway. Maybe give it all a Viking funeral on the 4th of July or something like that. With all the video you have, historical info for the kids etc. is probably better represented by that than would be served by a few old hives anyway.

We are an entire nation of beekeepers running single brood chamber (Italy) and during the nectar flow to push the bees up to the super we reduce the frames (by using a divider) to 8/7/6/5 and sometimes even 4 frames, depending on how strong the queen is... If you're more interested in these tecnics just drop a call, every nations has its methods and tricks.

Great run thru. I use single brood chambers and prefer them. I agree, give the bees a lot of upper space, allow the bees plenty of room to move nectar up away from the brood chamber. This also gives emerging bees "floor space". Backfilling the brood chamber is the biggest problem newer beekeepers and hobby bee keepers have. Know when the flows start, gear populations toward that. Pull back the strength early. When the flow starts and if you give them room, their mind set changes to the hording instinct. Love your videos.

I learned with a single brood chamber hive. So much easier and have never even thought about double brood. Over winters easily for northern Canada, and so easy to manage. Thanks for sharing!! Sometimes I forget that beekeepers do things differently.

If you are using all metal excluders, "which side up" is more important as the manufacturing process can result in a "bow" that could allow queens to pass. I believe this is the main reason the there being an "up and down" side. I, like others, run "metal mid rib down".

For those of is using deeps, mediums and shallows, the "wear damaged" boxes can often be downsized on a tale saw to give them new life in many cases. If not repairable but the sides are still usable, I cut them down to ends and use them to build nuc boxes. That gives me a new nuc box with good hand holds on the ends!

I just went single for three hives since the buildup is done and the flow is now here. They were late bloomers, so I’m trying it for the first time to capitalize on the flow. But it will cause me to have to feed them for winter. My doubles I can get away with a lot of times without fall feeding. Ready to see how it goes. Drawn supers over an excluder.

David Mathews II Come check out my channel, there’s a lot going on👍. Been so busy with splits and queens getting mated, I haven’t had a chance to figure this single brood box out. The flow has come on strong and all my boxes are plugged with nectar 🤪

I run a few as single deeps and am amazed how well it works but I'm finding my bees do better if I leave them one medium extra in the fall. It's hard leaving that 3.5 gallons behind but... How it works: in spring when the flow starts I can find the queen, put her in the deep, cover with excluder, add two more supers and I've already got bees "upstairs". It works great.

Don Bearden we run deeps for brood chamber and medium for honey supers We do the first doubling down in deeps, then remove a split, then add mediums without excluder. Then we put the excluder between the deep brood chamber and the first medium super. Once bees above the excluder emerge, then the cells can be reused to store nectar. :-)

I have 1 deep with 2 mediums in both of my colonies. Wanting to reduce, split, move each hive into single medium hives and supplement a medium on top to collect honey. Putting excluder between to keep queen out of top box for the entire foraging season. Then splitting hives once more at top of fall, September, and reduce their numbers to be a strong small hive through winter. I'm thinking of stacking one hive on top of another for warmth sharing to sustain them through the cold months. Also, thinking of using double sided boxes for warmth. Most bees utilize trees for homes. Most trees, in my opinion, are twice as thick as your typical box. I think that helps them to be sustained better in winter. I can always add a 2" extender on top of boxes, under the lid, with screened air holes for summer air circulation. Does this make sense? Thanks Kamon for all your videos and knowledge!!🐝

In a nutshell, the queen is allowed to expand, during rapid growth in the spring, into a second deep brood chamber. Then, a split is taken (without the queen). Then another replacement deep is added for her to lay in, giving her all the room needed to create a decent-sized/big colony just before the main flow. At that point, you’re still dealing with a double deep. Then he puts a queen excluder over the bottom deep. Any brood now above the excluder will emerge and the cells used for nectar storing. Then it’s reverted back into a deep single box brood management system. We love this

cant get rid of that box for the memories. take it and use it to store your wax in it or something and tell the kids a story about the box you see this box this is how I got your mom Im sure you can think of something. I was in my double deep hive today went through it an I was there for a good while maybe 45 min. to an hour did not find the queen I marked a couple weeks ago saw all kinds of brood no swarm cells though. Also seen how they are drawing out the 4 new frames i put in for them

Hi Kamon. Here in the Murfreesboro suburbs we're trying to keep smaller colonies: single 8 frame. But to keep the bees from swarming we seem to keep splitting and making increase, also somewhat alarming for the neighbors! What's the answer, short of selling off nucs or finding outyards and buying more equipment?? Have you ever caged a queen to reduce laying for a while?

Hi kaman and laurel. I just got 2 pkg.'s of bees1 on Saturday 1 Sunday . My first ever! Install went great on Saturday. Sunday, installvwas really good, different temperament. HOWEVER, an hour and a half later, hail, a torrential downpour and cold...😥... how many bees can be lost and the hive survive?

Would it be enough to add a second deep box on a strong colony in May-June and when the main flow has started put the queen in bottom box, add an excluder and "second" brood box on top to avoid swarming if i dont have enough equipment for making nuc or there`s no need to expand my apiary ?

There is nothing wrong with that and it would benefit your new bees as long as it isn't infested or diseased. I assume it's been frozen.

Yanks the supers and throw on a box of foundation and feed. Get more combs that way!

Actually was wondering if you could do a video on varroa mite management, prevention, and treatment. Recently did a hive inspection (only have one hive right now) and saw several varroa mites. Since it's a new hive, I'm not going to do a alcohol wash or sugar wash to risk losing bees. Unfortunately I just done have that many bees right now to risk dying. Is oxalic acid treatment harmful to the bees?

Nectar or feed. Colony has to be growing and expanding also. if you are fixing to have a honey flow start than feeding right before is not a good idea. If you are not planning on getting honey anytime soon feed them

Should beekeepers buy packages of bees from their area or is it ok to buy Bees from southern or Deep South states if you are from a northern state? Do southern honeybees do well up north or should be try to get bees from.our climate/area?

Always try to get local survivor bees whenever you can. They will always do better for you. Good question. I'm south Louisiana and I have to say we don't really have winter. My bees have brood and drones all winter long. Last winter there were maybe 7 days, spread out over the season, that the bees couldn't fly. I don't think they would do well in the cold areas.

Hi Kamon....great chat last night. I have 5 hives with 2 that are double deep brood. Quite honestly, that's all I really want or need to manage. With that said, if I don't want additional hives, will I have to live with some occasional swarming if I don't want to split for additional hives? Thoughts?

Todd, I have a similar quandry with single 8 frames! Maybe try applying some of what Ian Stepler does: add more deeps to prevent swarming, then late in the flow, mash them back down below the excluder. Let them back fill the emerging bees with honey. My feeble thoughts are that it might be nice to do a couple of splits to keep the bees out of the trees. In the fall you can take and combine the nuc with a hive that has an old queen. You could have a drone layer later in the year and you have a young queen waiting. If you didn't need the queen just combine with a smaller hive to help their winter survival.

Great video Kamon, do you have to have drawn comb above the excluder, as the queen can't get above, or will the bees draw more regardless. Also is it dependant on feeding above the excluder well.

So first off I'm new to being a beek. I have a friend who is showing me the ropes right now and I have my hives next to his. Hes very natural in his technique and does not recommend a queen excluder. My first hive is in his boxes hes letting me use and my other hive is in my boxes I bought. I'm doing what he recommends in his boxes and I'm experimenting in my hive to compare. My question is regarding the excluder i put on my 2nd hive and given how "off" this year has been I put a medium on instead of the other deep box. I noticed there are bees up there after 3 days but not a frames worth right now. How do I entice the bees up there since I cant use any deep frames? Just let them slowly wander there?

You can top feed. You can open the top entrance and close the bottom with screen. You can wait. You can put a frame of brood up there. You can put it below the brood box for a while instead of straight on top. Right? There are any number of ways that will work out well. The least offensive way may be to put it below the brood chamber (ideally with a frame of brood) for a little while. A week or so. These are all things I used to do when I ran Langstroth hives. That's my 2 cents. Please reply with any questions and with an update. I hope you have good success!

Hi , I’ve seen many of your videos and enjoyed them very much. My name is Jorgo and I am a new beekeeper, only one year and don’t have much experience. It would be amazing if you could answer 2 of my questions. I have 5, 2 story hives all of them deep. But I am noticing that 3 of them have a very high population and I want to add another story to those 3. They all have a queen excluder and the ones I want to extend are medium size. One question I have is should I be moving the queen excluder to between the 2nd and 3rd story when I add it? Also the second story there are 5-6 frames with honey should I take it out or leave it in? Is 50-60% copped. Thank you Jorgo Gjika

Leave that honey and excluder where they are. Check bottom box like he shows in this video and move frames to other boxes as needed. That's what I would do. I hope it goes well for you. Update?

Question: I had Queenless ten frames of bees from a cutout but had Queen cells..two weeks later Queen emerged and she stayed but 7 frames swarmed off..what happened do you think? I'm clueless

I do cutouts. Sounds like you put too many full frames. I rarely fill more than 6 frames and leave the rest for them to draw or else put the rest as drawn frames. Never had a cutout swarm that way. I hope it's going well for you now.

Question I just in stalled a package of bees around the 7th of April I went out to check them on the 23rd and I found lots of nice brood and a queen cell and a few drone cells is that normal? What should I be looking for? Any comments would be helpful. Thank You

That's all very normal. The girls get confused often and make those queen cells even when you have a good queen. Some drones are a good thing. You found what you were looking for. A laying queen. Now look to see how they progress with brood and stores. They will need room so watch that they don't get bound up with way too much pollen and/or nectar. Its normal to be nervous starting out. It means you care. =-) Update us please.

Kamon, Do you use excluders on all your honey colonies? I had not used them and I very seldom see any brood above my second deep. I tried one this spring with drawn comb above in the super. It seemed to really slow them down getting up and filling the super with bees. Should I just give them longer to acclimate to the excluder or add a upper entrance?I am located in Missouri. Thanks for all the great information.

mattburleson1976 add a couple of frames of uncapped brood in supers and the bees will be up there in seconds!

@@jocelynbertrand1196 You could put the super on for a week and let them start working it and then put on the Q excluder, I think that may help.

Also you can put that new box and excluder under the brood chamber for a while. The open brood suggestion is probably best in your situation. Both of the above will work. Also top feeding. And top entrance work well. I used to train my bees by screening off bottom entrance for a week while I opened the top entrance. Hope it's going well for you. Update?

Well I added the excluder and pulled one honey frame from another hive(deep brood,medium honey supers). Came back a week later and it was packed with bees. I am thrilled and start to inspect and no wonder they are there as I have 6 packed frames of brood. Queen slipped my inspection . So I got the Queen below and inspected again today. I don’t think I will have a problem with the excluder now that they are so used to going through it. I may, as mentioned above, let her lay up a frame or two then send her below. The mistake I made actually seemed to work pretty well. Thanks for the replies. I didn’t get the notifications. Good luck this season.

@@mattburleson1976 Oh wow! Lol glad it's turning out good for you. For me top entrance was a must when I ran Langstroth single brood chamber. Now I run all long Langstroth with excluders and I run them as single brood chamber. I have 3 doors in place of top entrance since I'm horizontal. Excellent production and it's more efficient for the bees having a door on the other side of the excluder. Keep us updated if you think about it please. I'm always so interested to know how it's going with everyone.

Hi kamen was going through my hives today had a super seizure cell in the honey super above the excluder no eggs no larva just the cell with an egg in it how is that possible

kamon, not sure if you'll see a comment on this old video. a number of my boxes are 8 frame boxes...can i run single brood box with 8 frame hive?

It would be slightly harder Chip. Got to keep the queen in laying room so you would need to pull some brood out and put if possible a empty comb back in. Depends on how strong the queen is laying how much pollen is coming in etc.

I made a split but couldn’t find queen. I come back 3 days later and still can’t find her in either box. I seen lots drone cells in one hive. Kinda worried I killed her! First time splitting.

I put a frame of brood in with them and they only made one queen cell which has hatched. Still no queen as of today. I don’t think the hive will make it. So as a test I am leaving it as long as I can to see if the workers can fix the problem or if the hive dies out.

@@kevinarcher7701 You might see her yet Kevin. You made good decisions putting in brood for them to make a queen. It's swarming season so maybe you can catch a swarm and shake them into that nuc. Or maybe a beekeeper in your area has queen cells they need to remove? It'd be worth checking into. Queen cells can be cut from a comb and pressed into your comb easily if the opportunity arises. I really hope this one works out for you. If you are in South Louisiana let me know and I'll give you a queen lickity split. Free of charge of course.
