Single dad foster care/Single dad adoption (or even just single parent adoption) can be controversial, but it should not be. There are too few available homes for children in the US Foster Care System. Especially since research trends in single adoptive parent's favor (Men and Women)!
How can Single parents find the support they need when living out their foster care story and/or adoption story? Can Single People Foster & Adopt from the U.S. Foster Care System as easily as married couples? What challenges will they face?
In this video I share answers to the top five questions many parents have regarding fostering and adopting from the US foster care system.
I have been a foster parent for many years, I am an adoptive parent, and I have been engaged as a support person for foster families/social workers for several decades. Hopefully my insight and experience can help pave the way for other single adoptive parents and single foster parents as they explore this foster care process and adoption process.
If you have any questions about Single Parent adoption, Single Parent Foster Care, Single father adoption, etc. Please feel free to ask! We hope to keep making videos that inspire, encourage and inform potential foster and adoptive parents along their foster care and adoption stories.

I adopted an 11 year old boy two years ago. He's been a challenge but I wouldn't trade him for anything. He's 13 now. His dad was physically abusive and his mom was too involved with her own stuff. I sat down with my adopted son and asked him if it was ok with him if I tried to adopt him. He agreed. He has many behavioural issues but I love him wholeheartedly.

I adopted a boy from foster care and found that there is a HUGE bias against single dads, at least initially. The key is that the case workers (the deciders) must be comfortable with you, which means they have to get to know you first. I got to know one case worker when I was helping with child care for some friends who were adopting. Because that case worker got comfortable with me, she helped me adopt too. But other case workers would hardly give me the time of day.

What a great way to earn her trust and respect! I've had a lot of luck with caseworkers who see the positives around single dads. There have been a couple of issues around caseworker supervisors having some gender based biases, but for the most part, these didn't stop me from providing care to kids who need it.

Thank you for the comment! I am definitely not a super dad... Just figuring it out as I go like every other parent out there. 🙂 That said, statistically adopting a child, or providing a good home for a foster child, impacts all of our futures in an amazing way. I hope more healthy individuals are called to foster and/or adopt!

Merry Christmas. I had a calling 2 days ago to look into adopting a child that I randomly came across in a Facebook video. I’m a single man of 33 years old and didn’t even know if it was possible for me to adopt. I have so many questions and concerns that I wanted answered so I looked for them on KZfaq. And I found you. What a blessing. I feel like pieces are all coming together for me and I am so happy there is someone else out there like me. Thank you for posting all these videos. I know they take a lot of your time and are hard work but they will definitely help so many people. God bless your family! I look forward to watching many more of your vids!

Adopting a child from a hard place is... Well... hard. But, if you are called to it, it is a beautiful and wonderful experience. I'm so glad to have provided some answers. There are a lot of single dads who adopt. A lot of us initially plan to get the word out, but then adopt children and find that our time is suddenly completely filled with kids. Thank you for the encouragement! That really means a lot!!! We plan to keep making videos, but needed to take a break over Christmas.

I am in the same boat. However, due to some things from the past I don't think I'll ever be able to adopt or be a foster parent; so for me I'll never had to deal with the process of either, but its great to see others who have the same thoughts I have had. I run across kids all the time on adoption sites, and the Wednesday's Child stories and feel so bad that some have never had the chance to go to a forever home, after years and years of their stories being ran, then many ended up aging out of the system and just being tossed out in the world without anyone to turn to for help. Its very sad, and the system is beyond flawed in its ways unfortunately and leaves a lot of doors unopened that could have been great placements for many of those kids. These types of videos are great, every question I've ever thought of so far I've actually found answers to since I found this channel, its weird I always thought I was the only one that ever wanted to adopt as a single guy, turns out I guess there are actually quite a few who've thought about it, and some who have done it and actually have taken the time to talk about their experience and answer all these questions.

Just found your channel - what a great one! Thanks so much to both you and your son for sharing your experiences and advice! I'm also single and had planned to build my family through adoption from foster care. Was licensed in 2011, but then job changes sidelined my plans. Now, 10 years later (and, coincidentally, 10 years older!) - I'm still thinking about it. Nervous, still dealing with career changes - but thinking about it. It's wonderful to hear from someone who fosters older children too. I don't know if HeartGallery does work in your state, but they do a lot of nice work here. Not just photo listings and interviews to help kids find adoptive homes (especially older kids and sibling groups, or kids with special needs), but also other ways people can help like donating to give a kid a special trip or birthday party, or partnering with Big Brothers Big Sisters for mentorship options. I'm thinking about some of those avenues while my job situation is still uncertain.

Thank you for finding us! I've heard of Heart Galleries before, but have no experience with them. Sounds like a great organization! I also delayed fostering until I felt like my job situation was stable. Honestly, one of my regrets is that I waited so long. That said, I definitely do not regret having a stable job/income before fostering! This allows me to be more generous, less stressed, and more fully present toward our foster kids.

You are doing great and the two of you are suited well in making these videos. I have not been watching these videos in sequence, but that is OK. I have adopted/fostered many children over time. I have received them on short stays and long stays, through social services and the courts, and some just overnight for their security. They have mostly been boys, but a few girls as well on occasions. Sometimes they came as pairs, being siblings or twins. Most of the children have been well behaved, all except for a set of boy twins and one single boy, who were stealing from me and then just ran away. However, I am not writing about them here. You were talking about social workers and an occasion came back into my memory that I thought I would share. At the time I had a set of 15 year old boy twins, not the ones I mentioned above, a 13 year old girl on short stay and a 17 year old boy. Then came the day when I and the twin boys had to visit their social worker. We entered into his office and before I could say or do anything, one of the boys said to him, 'This is our MOTHER! He does the cooking and washes our clothes and we have to do the washing up of the dishes and the cleaning.' They were so serious at the time that both I and the social worker just burst out laughing. I thought it would be a little fun in sharing this story with you. 🙂. All the best for you and yours.

So happy to find your channel! It's hard to find single foster parent experiences. I'm in the home studies phase. Hopefully I'll be certified in the next month. I have a son and asking to take boys (I've known for a long time I was meant to be a boy mom lol). So question for your son... What were the things in your home or other homes he was in that he liked and didn't like? I'd like to make sure my kids have proper duffle bag gear for their things. I was going to make a "welcome package" with fresh toiletries, their own towel, choice of a personal blanket if they wanted, and choice of a "stuffie" if they wanted it for comfort. What are his thoughts? Thank you so much!

Hello, I am a 45 years old single male, living in Toronto. Still this year (2024) I am moving to Alberta to work as registered nurse. I was married before, but I do not intent to do it anymore. Unfortunately I did not have kids, but I really want to be a parent. As I do not want a wife, I am considering to adopt a child after I buy my house, and stabilize myself in Alberta. I really want a child to take care, pass on my values, help to grow in way to become a great person. I am at the beginning of my research, so I have a lot of questions and concerns. But my plan is something for 1.5 - 2 years from now. I hope to find all the answers until that. Thank you for your video!

I grew up in a very dysfunctional and horrible household. Raised by a dissociated mother and a "touchy" step father. I'm probably only alive now because of the nanny my mom hired. Who was 1,000 times a better mother figure than her. So I understand why some children need to be with a single father or mother. I remember talking to my biological father about taking full custody of me but he was too busy being a dr. And my step father was a well yeah... but I didn't have the strength to leave my siblings when the cps came knocking and I lied. And umm they convinced me to keep my mouth shut...

I’m a single dad, I have raised my daughter on my own since she was born. It will only be a few more years until she is off to college and out on her own. I have started kicking around the idea of fostering or adopting. I am a school bus driver now and I work with a lot kids in need of homes and stability. I have heard in West Virginia that single men have a difficult time in the process. This video and a few others I have seen are leading me to believe this is not accurate.

Thank you for watching! I have faced a lot of opposition. I try to have the attitude of "I'll just quietly prove you wrong," or "If this person won't work with me, I will find an agency/caseworker who will." So far this has worked for me. Once you've raised a child I think they are a little more open as well.

Thank you for the comment! I don't know your specific situation, but for most foster agencies all that is required is for you to have a job and be able to consistently pay your bills/cover your own expenses. The subsidies they provide in most areas are supposed to be enough for your to raise a child on the "Walmart lifestyle" (i.e. The child's clothes are bought from Walmart and no eating out). For me, I could not picture raising a child on the minimum. That said, the "minimum" is often more than many foster kids had before coming into the system.

I do have a question for you and your son: I know in another video you talked about kids in foster care not being allowed to use social media in the same way (no images or voice recordings or videos with them, for their protection I assume). But I was also thinking about how awful it is to have only a paper sack of belongings to carry to a placement! And I thought about how online storage and portability might be comforting. Things like family photos as mementos, from wherever a child has lived and bonded ... is there any way to store such things electronically but securely, so a child won't lose those? Like, a Dropbox account they can have, to keep school pictures and family pictures, etc., so they can always access them if they want to, but they're protected from online predators? Maybe it's not so easy to do. But if a foster kid stayed with me, I'd want him / her to have photos of our time together, if he/she wanted. It just seems there ought to be a secure way to do that.
@letsgodad
@letsgodad 3 жыл бұрын
I agree! It would be nice if there was some type of online storage as a backup for all their important photos/memories. They do have physical "Lifebooks" after they have been in foster care. These contain important photos, letters, etc. and travel with them wherever they go. Also, I (and many other foster parents) make sure that every child that leaves our home (whether they are going to a kinship placement, being reunified, or moving to another level of care within the foster system) leaves with luggage. Not brown bags. In fact, an organization that is just about to begin a partnership with our foster support organization has provided my family with 3 or 4 suitcases for foster kids. 🙂

Have you ever done any mentoring of kids by any chance? Given some things in my background from years past, I highly doubt the system would ever let me foster or adopt...and the things from the past have nothing to do with kids but the system doesn't care, they look at the types of incidents and automatically make assumptions and immediately deny the paperwork, its not only happened to me but to many others. I've been told I could mentor kids, but given the denial of paperwork for adoption/foster care not sure how they'd figure it would be ok to mentor kids....what I don't understand is my background isn't the greatest, yep I did something stupid and stole money and given where I live in a small town, its all about who you know, and what church you attend as to how much harm you can do to someone, so of course they brought felony charges against me as a result, and since the above mentioned small town buddy buddy BS they of course made it so that I had to do 30 days and 3 years probation. Which I'm not even sure really how that connects to denying foster/adoption paperwork, well I guess because I'm not an angel they see it as I can't be a parent because I was an idiot and stole money from an employer, whom we shall just say was mostly absent from his business for 4 years while I ran it for him so he could go play and underpay his employees....not an excuse but at the same time....well we will just leave it at that. I love helping kids, and have been doing so for 16 years. Not in any sort of professional capacity, but helping friends' kids over the years with school work, being a baby sitter a lot of times for them, taking them to appointments when parents are at work, dealing with their growing up, having a parent or parents absent for most of their lives, to helping kids that are heading down the wrong path, using my experience mentioned above as a way to show them what happens when you screw up, and don't do the right thing, and where it leads you in the job world, or rather the lack of you are extremely restricted as to what jobs you can do, where you can go, things you can join, etc. Its very rewarding helping kids, and watching them grow into young men/women through the years and then moving on and having their own families. I guess a lot of wanting to help kids is my step dad was an *******. I never had friends in school, never allowed to go hang out, never allowed to play sports, had to go to school and come straight home, wasn't allowed to have a part time job, etc. All the stuff kids today take for granted, I was never allowed to do...my mom tried but always lost the battle. So now when I see kids struggling, hurt, etc. it makes me want to jump in and help them.
@letsgodad
@letsgodad 3 жыл бұрын
First off, mentoring is a great way to help kids! Yes, I have mentored several kids. At certain stages in a child's life you may actually have more positive influence over someone than their parents. Thank you for investing your time this way! To the problem at hand: I am sorry they denied your paperwork. It could be that the recruiter you spoke with is acting out their prejudice against you. Normally my suggestion would be to speak with foster parent recruiters from several agencies before assuming that you will never be able to be certified. If you are in a small town that may not be an option. Also, I'm not 100% on this, but my understanding was that the only unforgivable foster parent crimes were crimes against children and violent crimes. Most other things can usually be waived after a period of time. Maybe this time hasn't passed yet? Check your state laws. That said, it may take significantly longer to be certified, there may be a few extra hoops to jump through, and you would need to find an agency willing to walk that road with you. It sounds like the recruiter you spoke with is not willing to work with you. If you do find one that is, it is critical that you are 100% honest from start with them. If anything comes up as a surprise later, it would almost certainly lead to a denial. Let me also add from my own experience that small towns are hard places to be a single male foster parent. While many people do not actively exercise their prejudices, they do tend to quietly ignore and exclude you (and your kids).

It hasn't helped with the biased people we have come across. However, it has created a great support system full of encouraging and accepting people who wrap around my kids! Honestly, I wouldn't have survived my first 2 years providing foster care without a good church. Maybe a long positive track record helps a little with biased individuals? I’m in the same boat. I’m a single 66 yo, and seriously thinking of adopting an older teen, someone at or near aging out. I know I can’t meet the needs of someone with significant mental or physical impairments, and am looking one whose personality and desires are a good fit. So I’m on the picky side about who…but I’m not rich, closer to a grandpa than a dad, and I’m not sure I can pass the financial aspect of the screenings…fixed income…but I have a home I would love to share with the right kid. I have thought of trying to have my home listed as a transition residence and then get an aged out kid i could live with who could live with me and who could be accepted by my extended family and have him placed there…and that gives us a couple of years to bond and see how things work out…and if things do I could consider an adult adoption if they wanted. Just so many hurdles I don’t know if I can navigate…and yet I have seen a couple kiddos that think would make great sons…and who might think me an okay dad.
