The Voyage of Fathom

The Voyage of Fathom

Күн бұрын

From 2016 to 2020 I sailed single-handed around the world on 'Fathom', a Vancouver 28 pocket cruising boat after leaving my job, career and land life in my wake. My voyage was the adventure of a lifetime and I returned home to the UK 4 years and 3 months later. 37,200 nautical miles had passed under the keel in a solo circumnavigation via the Panama Canal and South Africa. This is my attempt at piecing together a 2-part film about my adventures in the Voyage of Fathom. I hope you enjoy watching.
Part 2:
In this 2nd and final episode, I arrive in Cape Town at the end of 2018 before sailing up the South Atlantic to the Caribbean via stops at Saint Helena and Fernando da Noronha. On approach to Grenada in April 2019, I cross my ground track from two years earlier to complete a loop of the world.
After a few months break from the boat, I return to the Caribbean in October 2019 before sailing back across the Atlantic to the UK via a stop in the Azores. On August 8th, 2020, 4 years and 3 months after sailing away, I arrive back to the Solent and am escorted back to Yarmouth Harbour by friends and family.
Here are some of the highlights and most memorable moments including swimming with whale sharks, Caribbean island hopping, Coronavirus lockdown in Antigua, being stuck onboard at anchor for 3 weeks in the Azores whilst the Border remained closed, and of course returning home after so long away.
My boat is called 'Fathom', an 8.5m Vancouver 28 built by Northshore in 1991. Long keeled, cutter rigged and with plenty of storage, she is the perfect pocket ocean cruiser.
Check out the 1st part of my circumnavigation film here: • Single-Handed Sailing ...

I also own a Vancouver. I have reviewed your excellent footage of your voyage multiple times, not only to admire the places you have been but also the little details you added to your boat. I am slowly building miles on my boat to be ready in the near future to stretch out my sea-wings. Vancouver boats are truly built for the ocean, and I am proud to own one.👍

This is an example off an truly heroic voyage, and also what you tube should be,a way to let the world now about it. So that said,no rediculous filmery,no chit chat bla bla bla,no weaning for money via patreons, just honest storytelling. Shame on you, vagabondes, delos, doodles, and why not uma....... You have my respect and admiration!!

People might think this is easy because it was on a 28 foot boat. Probably as easy as climbing Mount Everest barefoot. It is a tough and difficult thing to circumnavigate solo. More people summit Mount Everest in a day than have circumnavigated solo since the beginning of time.

Just finished watching both 'parts' of your voyage - fantastic journey and adventure, very well deserved. 30+ minutes to see the world and experience life on board wasn't enough, I feel robbed! 😊 I wish you'd made many videos documenting in detail the routine, the destinations, life at sea etc., a bit like Barry Perrins (Adventures Of An Old Seadog) but the younger version. Go again and do it properly this time so that us armchair sailors can get our fix! 😉

Just wanted to say that I really enjoyed your round-the-world video set - well done! I was so impressed with the turn out for your return - didn't see that coming. You Brits really "get" sailing. I'm from the U.S. - plenty of sailing but I don't think the same level of enthusiasm.

Great inspiration inducing stuff! I can't get one scene of part one out of my mind, thought of it every day since watching part one. it is "jumped overboard for a swim 100 miles offshore, ......... in hindsight should have tied myself to the boat!" Anyhoo great stuff keep em coming.

Don't give up on it Barry. Don't know how you are doing now, but our skipper has had bowel and lung cancer, there are few prostates left on board and our medicine supplies would make Boots the Chemist look undersupplied in comparison. We sail until we can't. Even then I have been lifted on board post surgery. But my wife wouldn't help me get out of my wheelchair to get onboard because she said it could endanger my health.

What an excellent trip and what an excellent account. The memories will keep you going for many a long year. From some of the footage it appears that you could just as easily have swum round the planet, underwater, with no need for the fine Vancouver. 10/10 on all counts.

...I am feeling a strong urge to go onto the high seas. ...I might need to get a boat - problem seems to be all the boats I could afford would leave me spending twice as much to get them sea capable according to some channels and then I'll have no money to actually go sailing - esp not without a way to make money while out sailing. I suppose I could do some leatherwork docked up. Absolutely amazing journey!

I congratulate you on your circumnavigation. I'm writing this from my sailboat in the safe harbour as it is a windy and unpleasant week. Tip, It's my view only until you told the bird sitting on your tiller to turn the tiller to starboard 10%. I did not think you were able to speak! It's frustrating not to get your personal inputs during parts 1 & 2. Advice from an old sailor why don't you consider doing a voice-over on parts 1 & 2 your tip, I know it will have more value to the sailors out there as well would dramatically enhance the value of your circumnavigation effort. Regardless, you did it nicely. Thanks for sharing, even though it is a silent movie video.
