Single HST Power car at Wigan - 21st September 2013

Ok, where's the rest of it?
One gem from the back catalogue when Great Central HST Power Car 43480 comes through Wigan en route from Neville Hill to Crewe.
It's not very common to see HST power cars out and about on their own but does happen occasionally when they are on the move for maintenance. DCR were actually operating this one on behalf of GCR complete with some tones...

Grand Central trialled an invisible train service where you can't see or hear it. The paintwork must have worn off the powercar because the rest of the train was there. They stopped the service as they didn't get any customers.

I wish it was a Great Central loco. If that route had survived the 60's cull we might not have gone through the HS2 saga.

this train is not in public use. Well i can tell considering the fact its just a powercar. Nice shot! you dont always see powercars on their own these days!

Brilliant catch and on the WCML as well were only the NR NMT HST uses now it's really weird seeing just the one power car but I bet it's quick at accelerating on its own on full power

Robert Johnstone yes, they used to take the scenic route. I can't remember if they went up to Heaton then over to Carlisle first or if they came via Keighley and Hellifield.

Dodgy running without a rear barrier coach as it means front end only recovery if there is a failure unless you can find a loco fitted with a drop-head buckeye such as a 90. Also running light means 75mph max top speed if you want any of hope of being able to stop inside the signal distances.

Yeah it's just classed as a light engine so limited to 75mph, they still carry the emergency coupling so in theory could be rescued from the front by a regular shackle fitted loco - as long as the driver knows how to put it together ;)
