There is a very interesting question. Which fiber optical cable is best? Single-mode or multi-mode. I guess there is no affirmative answer to this question. The dimeters cord of single-mode and multi-mode fiber optical cable are different. Usually, we don't mix use the single mode and multi-mode fiber optical cable. In this video, you will see why we can't mix use single-mode and multi-mode fiber optical cable and how to choose one of those cables totally depends on your application.

Thank you for your broad description. However I have request. Can you explain to me how to apply the use of fibre connect cable where we have four godowns and one office block. Each godown has 4 IP cameras, and they are all viewed at a central place where a rack is erected.

You might set PoE switch with SFP slot to aggregate the 4 cameras, even it needs single strand fiber optic cable for one direction.

Can I say that for short distances OM3 cable can be used for both single mode and multi mode scenarios? And therefore be more versatile?

The SFP transceiver will determine which type of fiber optic cable you can connect it to. If it is the single mode SFP transceiver, you can’t attach OM3 to it.

Hi.can you explain why did you connect only one side of fiber cable to the camera? i Dont know if it was Rx or Tx.what was the logic behind that? does ip camera only sends data?means you connect rx from nvr to tx from ip camera? why didnt you connect other side?

It is the BiDi transceiver which take different wavelenght to transmit and receiver the data. Only single fiber optical cable is enough to transmit and receiver the data. You can refer to this video for more information about BiDi transceiver. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/otKFnK2Qs7LGaYU.html

Thank you! Great explanation. So if the cost of the Transceiver is not a concern, it's always better to pickup single mode cable right? I don't get why everyone keeps saying use multi-mode cable inside of buildings. I can pickup 10G Single Mode SFP+ LC Modules for $13 to $15 per piece. That's really not cost prohibitive.

You are right. The multi-mode were cheaper, but single mode has similar cost now. The new technology such as PON are taking the single mode. The mass deployment draw the cost down on single mode. As long as you don’t need 25G or 40G, there is no difference between those two.

For new deployments, I'm now using LC SM BIDI exclusively. These do add slightly to the cost at 10gb and quite a bit at higher speeds, but long term, I expect this will be the industry standard.
