That’s very interesting. You can do the same thing if you measure your center arrow shaft to center peep height at full draw, get the arrow speed at 36” in front of the rest with a chrono, and accurate arrow weight. From there just plug the data into a ballistic calculator (my Luepold range finder has one built in) that you can find on the internet. A nice graph results that will show you the exact arc of your arrow. By the way, the reason you’ll hold dead on at short range is that the arc intersects the aim point at two different yardages, one as it passed up from the rest through the aim point, and another as it descends from the arc of flight and intersects the aim point. The graph described will show you both, or you can just find it by shooting at various yardages using your pin, stepping out one yard at a time from 8, until you have a perfect aim point shot. Keep stepping and you’ll map the curve right on your target. It is worth noting that as you point out you are 4.5 inches high at 20, and that might be the peak of your arc, so at 14 you might be only 2” high and at 25 only 2” high. If you want to make target accurate shots on deer, there is a lot to know in advance (this data plus the ranges of landmarks around your stand) and a lot to think about all while your adrenaline is haywire and a deer is marching by.

Like others have already stated, I've used a single fixed vertical pin (or crosshair) for 30+ years. I have never owned a slider sight or multiple pins. When crunch time comes, I believe in keeping things simple. I become a better shooter when my instincts take over. Deer (& turkeys) are unpredictable. This past week, I have been trying something new. I am shooting an EZ V sight for the first time, but I customized it to having one set of tick marks @ 20 yards. Now, I am shooting like my single fixed pin, but with the added benefit of using the V to help guide me with longer shots. If you like to kill targets, I suggest using a rangefinder & pins. If you want to harvest game, I suggest looking into the EZ V sight. I am not interested in how good my groups are @ 30 yards (or whatever known distance). I am interested in how good my groups are at unknown distances within 40 yards, because that's hunting for me! "Frame it & claim it" - This is how an EZ V sight works. I find visualizing a basketball inside the "V" makes me instinctually punch the center of the vitals at unknown distances, & that's what hunting is all about!

I really like the concept. I did my one pin on a cardboard silhouette of a deer. 30 yds is max for me so felt the pin dead on at 25 was good. At closer range it was easier to see the target and adjust where to shoot. I feel really confident any where in that range. Also shoot at the cardboard target and not dots have better feel where to shoot on the body. Thks.

Listen this is NOT for EVERYBODY... however I shot a single pin for 10 years straight and can HONESTLY say that in a short time I was good out to 50 yards easily and even 60 or 70 pretty comfortable.It simply takes practice.I have a 4 pin sight currently but I hate it.So I ordered a single pin. Hey man, to each their own!!!

I’ve been doing this for a couple years now, it’s funny how it’s not intuitive for a lot of people. All it is, is knowing your over/under. I leave my pin at 30, at 10 yards it’s 4” high, at 35 yards it’s 4” low. Any farther than that and I should be dialing to the exact yard. That was shooting about 290fps. I built heavier arrows this year, need to find my new pin setting. That just takes an afternoon.

This actually really helps me with hunting mulies out here in AZ. It’s often tough to stalk them closer than 40yds. Sometimes we ambush them from a ground blind if we have a really good spot. I am not confident at super long shots here, so figuring out my effective range and knowing where to hold is a great method. Might even use a 2x or 4x lens to dial in my hold over/under a little more precisely. Thanks! -Nick 😃👍

i know this is an older video now but its still one of the best. wanted to add a tip in case it can help somebody. i converted a 5 pin sight to a one pin sight by removing three pins. i left one additional pin to use as a ranging pin. if the belly to back is inside of the two pins the deer is either outside of my range for acceptable drop or too small for me to wanna shoot, if the whitetails body is outside of the distance of my two pins, i know its inside of my shooting range, then i just drop to my top pin and let it fly. im definitely better now than i was a few years ago at judging distance but the pins help me reinforce my choice quickly while calming the nerves to deliver a confident shot.

As others have said I to having been shooting a single pin for many years. The best method I have found is to zero it in a 25 yards. The bows theses days will shoot flat to 35 yards. That being said If a deer comes in at 20 yards put the pin on it and it want be just a little high, and if he comes in at 30+ yards it will just be a little low. Either way the difference is very little

Been hunting with a single pin for years. Dialed in at 30 yards the shot is 2" high at 20 yards and drops 6" at 40. Adjust your aim point accordingly. I mark the pin location with a small dab of colored nail polish and keep an extra pin down low that can be replace the original pin if it happens to get damaged. Keep It Simple Stupid

I've done this, but with my 460 gr. arrow, it's about impossible. I use 28 yard pin setting, and 35 is my max. If a deer is further than that, I should be able to adjust my pin to that range and make a shot. With my sight set at 28 yards, I will still be in the 10 ring on an IBO deer from 20 yards to 35 yards. Heavier arrows are a problem with this system, if your goal is to not to be holding over or under.

This is why a 3 pin slider is such a better option. No compromise or holding over for drop. In my opinion and set up with a heavier hunting arrow there is too much drop from a 20 to 40 yard shot to effectively set up a “point blank” zero like you are doing in this video. You definitely are going to sell some three pin sliders though lol

most deer are shot at 20 yards and in. hitting 4.5 inches high at that range in addition to the normal 4-6 inches of drop that is normal of a deer shot at by a bow moves your point of impact up by 10.5 inches. Math looks good on paper until all variables are taken into consideration.

With the single pin at 34, how high will the impact be at 5, 10, and 15 yards? How does being 15-20 feet high affect the POA/POI? I love the data points, but for me there’s a lot of unanswered questions in this video.

On modern archery equipment 0-20 yards is generally going to be the same pin setting. So, in this instance, a 34 yard pin setting would hit just as high at 5,10, and 15 yards as at 20 yards.. POI with a 34 yard pin setting and a 20 yard shot in a 15 foot tree stand is going to be the same measurement as the data point collected when shooting the 34 yard pin setting at 20 yards on flat ground. Garret did mention that you need you second and third axis' set on your sight before doing this to be as accurate as possible.

You could get a larger peep. Really depends on your set up. Hypothetically.. a slower bow, at 65lbs, shorter draw length and a relatively heavy arrow could all have that arrow dropping quite a bit at 80 and especially 100 yards. Making it impossible to get that 100 yard pin to stay within the peep. A lot of variables there to pin point one thing to change.

We are using a Nikon z6 and/or z7. With a 24-70 F2.8 lens (mostly). We also use a DJI Ronin as a gimbal for the camera setup, it works great for this setup and getting good clean moving shots. I added links to our camera gear setup in the description of the video!.. Sorry for the delayed response!

I don't understand all the big deal with single sight pin stuff, I hunted single sight pin when I was 25 years old shooting a 96lb screaming eagle with over draw, 24" arrow 10- 35yds zero but now I'm at 45lbs I need the 3 pins. Those 3/4/5 pin sights are cheaper than the sliding one pin sight system. Are people hunting deer with their 3d bows? Shed some light brother...

Some people just like the simple sight picture that single pin offers. I’ve been doing this for years - when I’m in a tree I set the sight at the known distance. When I’m on the ground I set it at 30 - I would aim a couple inches low at 20, but dead on from 25 to 35. At 40 I have to aim about 6” high. Beyond that I’m probably not shooting, but if I do, I would take the time to range and adjust the sight.

This might sound like a dumb question but how come it seems like nobody sets a 10 yard pin? Should your 20 yard pin hit the same from 0-20?

@@Whitetail_Properties ok. I consider myself a beginner but I'm not totally clueless. I just bow hunted as a kid 15 years ago and hunterd with bows that were from the mid 90's and I always remember setting a 10 yard pin. Now I have got back into it and bought a bow with a 330 ibo and have been shooting it and realized I have been hitting the same with my 20 yard pin anywhere within 20 yards and just wanted to make sure that was normal.

@@nicschaalma3508 lol 25 yards is the max I will shoot at a whitetail. I been shooting for about a week and a half and came to the conclusion that I'm hitting the same from 0-20 but I'm not sure if I am out to 25 BCS like I said I only have been shooting this new bow for like a week and a half so the few shots I have taking past 20 were inconsistent and I'm not really good enough yet to really see where I'm at past 20 but even once I get good enough and I plan on being good enough by hunting season, I still don't think I'll shoot past 25 BCS the deer moving before the arrows gets to it is something I don't wanna risk but It will be really nice if I can just use one pin from 0-25 BCS then that means I'll only need one pin for hunting.the issue I'm having with this new bow is once I get to full draw idk if I'm letting it creep or what but some times I'll be at full draw and the next thing I know it's jerking forward and coming completely forward on me so now I have to think to myself to make sure when at full draw that I keep pulling pressure and it's causing me to shake a bit at full draw. It's hard to explain what I mean through typing. The bow just feels really jerky and just feels like it once to go at full draw

I have one pin that’s good from 0-45 yards. If the deer is at 50 I aim at top of back and it’s dead on. Buti won’t ever shoot a deer at 50 yards 45 and less I just hold it where I want to hit. But I shout a Mathews Triax 70 lbs

@@denverlewis3486 I do have some drop. my single pin is dead on at 40 yards. So at 45 yards my arrow will drop around 3-4" and at 50 yards I aim just a little high. but from 5-45 yards every shot is in the kill zone of a deer so I dont adjust at all from 5-45 yards. Makes hunting so much easier. I killed a doe at 16 yards last year and a very nice buck at 28 yards. One pin no adjusting at all.

This system works great when you have fast arrow speed. Like 290+ the drop becomes less and less. Slow bows/arrows this isn't the best idea. He's using a slow bow here as shown in those huge drop measurements.

Why not just use a multi pin sight?
@ericlind3569
@ericlind3569 4 жыл бұрын
Because some of us don’t like the cluster of pins mounted horizontally. It blocks the sight window substantially, at least that’s my opinion. I’ve been shooting a single pin HHA Optimizer lite for over 20 years and have always had enough time to adjust my yardages. That was until I started elk hunting. Now instead of being effective to any whitetail out to 40 yards, I needed to extend my effectiveness to 60-70 yards for our west. I was shooting pie plates at 70 yards, but it didn’t matter, because I ended up shooting my 6x6 at 8 yards!! Hahahahaha

I have been using a single pin sight for over 30 years and shoot 3 to 5 deer annually. In those 30 plus years I have had I think 1 deer that I have not recovered so I think it is a very ethical way to hunt. I know hunters that use 3 and 5 pins that have a way worse record than that because when they get buck fever they look at the wrong pin or just plain can not guess yardage. Its all in what you are comfortable with.

@@blindluckoutdoors4850 ive used a single pin too. I now use a 3 pin slider. I have nothing wrong with a single pin. I shoot a 500gn arrow and my drop between 20-40 is too much to risk. This is not for everyone and a lot of new hunters will think this is a good idea when its not.

This works well, but maybe not if your bow is slow or you use excessively heavy arrows like some have been led to believe are necessary. I have been shooting this exact method for 8 years plus and killed 6 elk and 5 bucks at all 30 to 48 yds. My bow is fast and my arrows are lighter, but this works with just a little practice and takes a lot of stress at that moment. Plus its really easy to hold low or high if you need.
