Or, you could run 2 wires to each light from the switch box and pigtail everything in one box

Exactly! Using the neutral for the switch is not only not to Code but also dangerous, because the branch is still energized even though the switch is off and it presents a electric shock hazard.

Just pull a 2 wire feed to the switch, a 2 wire switch leg to one light and run a 2 wire from the first light to the second light, no need for 3 wire.

What in the ass!!!! Just run one wire from one light to the other and the other light run it to the switch
