Single speed conversion on this rad Marin Bear Valley SE MTB. Spent roughly $150 on the full build. Happy to have saved it from being in landfill, super stoked how it turned out. If you guys have any questions about it let me know in the comments.

Hi, I've been checking out your channel and have subscribed, I like your relaxed style and the fact you don't overdo the restorations, it's clear you love bikes ! I have a vintage (like me) Bear Valley SE, an earlier version, bought second hand nearly 30 years ago, it's in maintained but original condition so I won't convert it, but it's interesting to see what you've done with yours ! Mine doesn't have shocks and has the original Marin bull horn bar ends (which I beleive dates it to the early 90s) , fitted with an Exage Chainset & Deore LX components, can't believe someone would throw one away, still love mine !

I’m hoping to do a conversion like this myself with a Cannondale bike, but I may end up using a 7sp cassette, as it’s my only dedicated mountain bike so want to keep it somewhat capable for trails. @@waveywheelies i've recently seen someone who has actually done it . I think his channel's name was Bike Blogger. He had a video where he did a 2x1 drivetrain as a commuter setup. Like a small chainring for a bit of urban steeps and climbs and a bigger chainring for speed in flats. It was kinda amazing though. It was the first time I've seen one and after looking up a bunch of forums online, there were really a lot of people who've thought about it and have done it. Just normal bike grease, anti seize is also good as it'll be less likely to slip. Just make sure your tightening your clamp up enough. My seat posts very rarely slip, and if they do its only a mm or two.

Is the chain tensioner necessary? Im actually thinking of doing a conversion myself but i was thinking of just cutting the chain and pulling the wheel back.
@waveywheelies
@waveywheelies Жыл бұрын
It helps for sure but not necessary if you can find the “magic ratio”. The drop outs in this frame don’t allow the wheel to move back/foward. So the only way to tension the chain is a tensioner or to find that magic ratio, a half link chain also helps

I have a 15" Marin Bolinas Ridge similar to your Marin I think, I want to do the same single speed conversion, and I also want to swap out the busted suspension fork for a non suspension, is that possible, and if it is, how do I know which fork to buy? I don't exactly want to spend too much money.

cool, yeah that should definitely be possible! 2 main things to note when buying new forks, it will either be 1 1/8" or 1" steerer (most likely 1 1/18) and check if its a threaded headset or threadless. Then double check wheel size and brake mounts. Some forks will have disc mounts and some will have v brake mounts. hope that helps a bit

Thanks bro, and you too! It’s just a single speed cog, so just a normal cassette hub

I have my dads old mountain bike, and when I shift into higher gears it makes a grinding sound. Any idea what that could be? Thank you!
@waveywheelies

Could be loads of different things. The first things I would do is check the chain and cassette for wear, then check the adjustment on the gears (indexing) and also check the hanger isn’t bent. But yeah it’s hard to say without seeing/hearing it
