From 24 speeds to single speed, if your frame doesn't have horizontal dropouts, you probably need a tensioner.
The chance of having a perfect chain length is very unlikely, it can be perfect, but it also can be too loose or tight.
90 links: Too tight
92 links: Too loose
In order to make it fit, I inserted a outer link to the chain to make it 91 links.
Bike: Devinci Vancouver
Parts installed:
DMR Single Speed Converter Kit - 16t cog
Blackspire 32t chainring
Truvativ Firex
90 + 1 links chain

It can only work on bikes that have equal thickness chainring, for bikes like mine that had a staggered thickness front chainring I unfortunately just had to eat the extra slack and go through about 4 different sized front chainrings until I found one that would allow little enough slack to not fly off the front ring!

Great idea. If possible, use a pin for a wider chain. For example if you're using a 10 speed chain (which is what I always do when the 10 speed chains are worn to .75 on my road or mountain bike, they are re-used on my single speed) then I will use a pin from an 8 or 9 speed chain to join. It's okay that the ends of the pin sit wider than the chain because it's a single speed the wider pin won't interfere with other gears or shifting. This creates a stronger connection and you can see and feel where the chain was joined easily.

Been thinking about converting my aggressive hard tail to single speed, it’s been on my mind why people haven’t tried using half link chains instead of chain tensioners, so good job. Just need to see if I can keep up with my mates on the trails with one gear. I spent 20 years riding Bmx so love the idea of the simple single speed

I just built up a Dartmoor Primal single speed, absolutely loving it. Only thing is that with a push down tensioner the chain skips when Im torquing it hard on a steep bit. Can't go with a halflink because of narrowwide chainring, but I'm going to try using the tensioner pushing the chain up instead of down.

This is not the way to do this. What you do to the chain is unsafe and will injure someone trying this. The proper way to do this is by using a half link or a chain tensioner. Your dropouts are not designed for this setup.
