This movie was inspired by a real-life newspaper article that Wes Craven read. In 1974, two black burglars broke into a home in L.A. and were never seen again. When police came to search the home, they discovered barred windows, locked doors, and a roomful of children who were pale, malnourished, and had their tongues cut out. ⊙_⊙😱😱😫😫

Craven has stated that The People Under the Stairs was partially inspired by a news story from the late 1970s, in which two burglars broke into a Los Angeles household, inadvertently causing the police to discover two children who had been locked away by their parents

Horror Fact: the killer couple in the movie also played a married couple in the weird ass show Twin Peaks. She was the wife who shoots her eye out because her husband doesn’t love her and she gets amnesia and falls in love with a high school student. He was the husband who tries not to cheat with the waitress at the diner.😂

"Why are you dressed all cute like a Borrower?" 😂🤣💀🪦 I'm all sad when Roach dies. Always thought he was cute in a freakish sort of way. Also, I remember in an interview with Wendy Robie (The Mother), that the bathtub scene was actually the first scene she and A.J. (Alice) filmed together. She went to talk to her beforehand to go over what they were going to do and they both basically agreed on "Scream Bloody Murder the whole time". The director had to yell cut several times just because neither of them could hear him and they ended the scene hugging, laughing, and crying. 😀

Such a good movie. Loved the reaction Oh and I do also practice Tarot. And The Fool Cards meaning is.. The Fool is usually depicted as a beggar or a vagabond, he wears ragged clothes & stockings without shoes, and carries a stick on his back. The Fool represents new beginnings, having faith in the future, being inexperienced, not knowing what to expect, having beginner's luck, improvisation and believing in the universe. Perfect description of the character in this movie.

The film is full of small rich details that often get overlooked: - When Prince gets bayonetted, the room he dies in has pictures of children behind a chain-link fence, which are recon photos Mommy and Daddy did of children they were planning to abduct. - The money hoard is the old embalming cellar for the original funeral home. That and all the stuff in the basement and attic indicate that Mommy and Daddy hoard all the stuff their parents and grandparents left behind too. - Mommy and Daddy are the Robeson family (the sign outside the house). Mommy calls him Eldon at one point, so his real name is Eldon Robeson. - The run-down part of the house is the entire half of the building they've walled off due to disrepair. Rather than spend money to fix it, they've just locked it away just like the kids in the cellar. - Mommy & Daddy hoard all the money because they don't really know what to do with it. They're still stuck in the same mental state as children, which is typical of severe abuse victims. So they just do what their parents did, which is pathologically control and abuse their own children and collect as much money as possible. Beyond that, they don't know what else to do with their money or lives except repeat the process. - My personal theory is that Daddy wears the Leather suit because he thinks it's armor of some kind. Like I said, he's mentally still a child so he probably has no idea that his father wore it for sex stuff. He thinks it's a suit of armor which is why he keeps putting it on when he hunts Roach.

I remember watching this movie a few years ago out of nowhere and it was a really good thriller movie. Despite the exaggeration of the gore and comedy, the depiction of oppression that black people go through in America is spot on. Redlining is still somewhat a thing but not as big and seeing some white people greed show by becoming landlords promising to better the neighborhoods only to raise up the cost living there so they kick them out and sell their homes and property to commercial developers. This was one of Craven’s best films I’m glad you’re watching this.

As you watch this the satirical commentary of gentrification, classisim, and capitalism. I'd like to Give shouts out to both Brandon Adam's (Fool) & Sean Whalen (Roach) & AJ (Alice) there chemistry on screen is kinetic. Especially roach as he emotes with just his sounds. The "Dusties" are the children they Abducted. Over a span of 20 years. I know that people are on you to set up a Patreon, but the benefit of not having one is that you watch what you want to watch when you want to watch it. Half the reason a lot of reactors watch the same stuff is because they have the same audience and the Patreon contributors, and then the audience feels salty about reactors watching the same things. Excuse me toxic masculinity? Dusty-handed gremlin? How on earth do you come up with these zingers? Brilliant. Remember The Walking Dead episode this season when Connie and Virgil were trapped in a house with flesh-eating crazy people who lived in the walls? That had to be based on the movie. Well now I’m going to have to go see the movie to which you’re referring. I’ve been meaning to, but I didn’t know it was streaming. Unless I’m wrong.🤷🏻‍♀️

Such a great movie. I love that it spends the first half educating you as to how the nightmare house works so when Fool comes back you can more clearly appreciate his plan. Wes Craven has put out some that aren't quite so good, Shocker comes to mind.

This movie is always fun, but so you know, Alanda...the Brother and Sister in this( Everett McGill and Wendy Robie) play Husband & Wife on TWINN PEAKS( Everett McGill's character Ed on the show is an adored Fan favorite)....also...Everett McGill is prob one of the sweetest and nicest human beings in real life, so seeing him being a villain is always hilarious, knowing he wouldn't harm a fly. Ok fun fact: Halloween Horror Nights at universal Stuidios Florida has the entire set/majority of props shipped from California and assembled as a haunted house for their second year of operations. It was so damn popular they brought it back in 2006 for the 16th anniversary of HHN. Lemme tell you…it was as WILD as the movie (and I have come to appreciate the movie the older I get.). They gave you headlamps that were pretty bright to start but flickered and eventually turned off as you went further into the maze.

Fool is 13 and “too old for tit, too young for ass”. Ving Rhames delivers one of my favorite lines. It’s got my girl Kelly Jo Minter, she plays Fools sister, she was in all the horror films back in the day, Nightmare On Elm Street 5, Popcorn, Summer School, House Party.😂 I remember watching this and Tales From The Hood on UPN in the 90s. Thanks for reviewing this one Alanda. 👍

Loved Kelly Jo Minter back then b/c she also was one of the first Black women I saw survive a horror movie {this was a couple years before Jada in Demon Knight}. And like you said, the lead boy was in everything: The Might Ducks, Ghost in the Machine, Moesha, A Different World, etc. And because there weren't many black leads in horror back then, I loved this more b/c I have been a huge horror fan since I was 3 and my lil hi-yella Black butt noticed that not many Black people survived back in the early 80s movies except: The Thing, They Live, this, NoES 3 & 5, F13 Pt. 5, etc.

His nickname Fool is referencing the meaning behind the tarot card 'The Fool' moreso referring to the young, ignorant neophyte beginning their journey as opposed to meaning stupid. And yeah, that definitely was the actress from My So-Called Life. I just realized Kelly Jo was a real one... she survived three horror movies as a Black Woman in the 80s/early 90s: People Under the Stairs, Nightmare on Elm Street 5, and Popcorn.

@@justindenney-hall5875 lol, that's kind of you. She is a sweetheart; she reminds me of a cousin of mine. Watching her get into horror movies over the last several months has been fun. I've been a horror fan since 3 when I watched Nightmare on Elm Street 2, first movie I remember seeing. lol. And yeah, I would love to see her watch Tales from the Crypt: Demon Knight, too. I loved it as a kid. Jada was badass & Billy Zane was great in that role. I've suggested it to her a few times, I think it may be on her long list. Huge fan of the horror & fantasy stuff of the 80s-mid90s. May be a bit more campy but it seems like they took more chances instead of cookie-cutting everything or rehashing the same material.
