True-crime writer Ellison Oswald (Ethan Hawke) is in a slump; he hasn't had a best seller in more than 10 years and is becoming increasingly desperate for a hit. So, when he discovers the existence of a snuff film showing the deaths of a family, he vows to solve the mystery. He moves his own family into the victims' home and gets to work. However, when old film footage and other clues hint at the presence of a supernatural force, Ellison learns that living in the house may be fatal.

I watched this movie when it first came out and when it was over, I was convinced I had seen the smartest horror movie ever. It wasn't dumb, cliché, or campy. It stood out right on it's own and it scared the shit out of me, which is not easy to do! All the stuff with the moves and the music was so creepy it really brought the whole film home! That lawnmower scene where Ellison jumps out of his chair with that screaming noise...I went right through the roof! Who ever came up with this idea, 2 thumbs up, 5 stars and 10 out of 10!

lmao.. Everything is cliché about this movie. the jumpscare, the bullshit about some ancient pagan ritual, the kids being the only being able to communicate with spirits, etc.. it had everything of a haunted house cliché.

The first time I ever saw this trailer in TV I was dying in fear! I was so scared and then I realized, sinister and sinister 2 in 2021 is still good

As a person who does not watch horror movies if I can, I often get stuck watching them with friends. I watched hereditary and could not comfortably sleep for well over a month. that being said, I am trying to watch some of the scariest movies ever made to build up my natural tolerance. All of my friends watch horror movies and the movies kept coming up, Hereditary, Sinister and Insidious. to the horror movies watchers out here, tell me your thoughts on those 3 and tell me some genuinely scary ones. For me at least, scary movies have jump scares, suspense, ambiguous scenes, stuff in the shadowed corners, etc, not so much gore and story.

It's 12:37AM midnight. & Just right after finishing this movie i came straight here to write the review. I just want to say that this movie is not scary at all. Only some jump scares and few scenes are good. And the ending of the movie is terrific. Movie is Nicely made you would be engaged with the movie from beginning to to the last but once again this is not a scary movie at all. 11/05/2023 Thursday 12:42AM

You can try Smile(2022) ....it's totally different story but it was some terrifying and u can also try Gonjiam asylum(2018) which was a footage movie and full of jump scares

It's undoubtedly one of the most frightening movies of the 2010s but this preview shows entirely too much, especially key scares like the laptop screen and the son in the box. Might as well also show the lawnmower part. Trailers stink because they have no nuance or class.

Reading through some of the comments, it appears this film is very, very good. And some people are looking for something far different than the tried and true cliche's or tropes presented here, so those people say "this isn't scary, at all" and "Oh, you're being sarcastic, because it wasn't even a good movie" I can appreciate others' opinions as just that; opinion. What I really dislike is those who feel the need to over express some hyper-critique of something just to raise their own hubris. Wait....did I just become self-referential...🤨
