Some of the Titanic survivors who clung to the very rear of the stern claim that they just kind of took a step off the ship at the last second and it was like getting into a very cold pool. If anything, sinking ships blow a lot of air out as water enters and causes the structure to explode. As long as you not near an orifice where water is flowing in, you should not have to worry about getting sucked down with a sinking ship.
