Sintra: Fairytale Day Trip from Lisbon, Portugal! 🇵🇹

From Lisbon, Portugal, we set off on a fun day trip to Sintra to see Portugal’s most colorful castle- the Pena Palace. This vibrant castle is located high up on a mountain with 360 views of all of Sintra, and it honestly looked like it came straight out of a fairytale. After tasting a variety of different petiscos at a local eatery, we visited Sintra's Quinta da Regaleira, an inverted tower with an underground cave system. Our busy day exploring Sintra ended back in Lisbon, where we tried some more traditional dishes, as well as porco preto, and enjoyed a splendid night time show of Portuguese fado music. 🇵🇹

As Portuguese, I must say is a delight to see your enjoyment! Quick tips: 1) Quinta da Regaleira is a landmark, and it's something kids in most of the country visit as school trip, since is the set of "Os Maias" from the great Eça de Queirós; 2) Santo António Festival is not about the sardines, is the celebration of Saint António, normally known as the "Matchmaker Saint", and also the celebration of Summer, with all the goods it brings, like sardines! Looking forward to see the rest of your videos and congrats for the great work! :)

We have to go back to Sintra. We were on a tour in 2019 so we visited places according to the tour. You show us there is much more to explore. We plan to visit Portugal again and your vlog confirms it. We love Portuguese coffee, pastries, seafood, potato dishes... Also, English is commonly used so it is easy for English speaking tourists.

One of the many reasons I love your content is your openness to trying new food. I watch a lot of travel vlogs and as soon as someone says something like "well I don't eat X"--other than if it is a lifestyle choice or an allergy--I'm like NEXT. But you're just like: canned fish! Yes! Octopus? Sure! I love it.

Another Epic. Tremendous video 👍👍. You made me and TienTien (the panda) very very very hungry 🤤 🤤 You started and ended with food (Loving your pork ham with acorn flavor). And I stuffed with amazing food just watching it. All the food looked so delicious. TienTien is very envy of you two, with so many delicious food to try and eat. With the cheapest options but the best food and story behind them. I love the drone shots (Chad great job); how to you do it. Do you need a license or permit to take these out if world shot. Claire you have mastered the walk and 360 spin shots and very nice perm. I love the you guys swing holding hands shots. And the Sinatra Church, Castle, inverted tower, caves and ponds looks so enchanting. Thanks for sharing your adventure in Portugal and it’s will be on my bucket list for sure. Stay safe and healthy. Can’t wait to see your next video.

Hi Chad and Clare, great videos! I am sad because while Pena and Quinta da Regaleira are both beautiful places to visit (and Pena is very impressive and beautiful) you missed the more historically and architecturally significant palace in Sintra, the Palacio da Vila. It would have been worth the wait (which since covid have not been that long). While Pena is a XIX century romantic castle (nothing there is original, except the inner courtyard, which is XVI century Manuelin, a form of late gothic, the original convent, everything else is a romantic interpretation of medieval styles), the Palacio da vila is very architecturally significant as a Medieval (XIII century) palace, that enjoyed several add ons and sports a number of architectural and historically significant firsts: the first garden on a european palace (yes not very impressive but it was the first due to muslim influence, but has a small corner with a primitive form of air conditioning, micro water sprays to keep cool in the summer), Mudejar art (muslim art and architecture after the reconquista), the first tyles in Portugal (which is very famous for tyles, in fact I recommend visiting the tyle museum at Madredeus in Lisbon, also very impressive), the Manuelin wing and much more! I hope you can return and visit it some time in the future! Also he wasn't a member of the Knights Templar, the Knights Templar were a religious order that was very important in the founding of Portugal and the Reconquista, and became the largest landowner in Portugal. Because of that when it was extinguished, by the machinations of a French king who wanted to take it's wealth, the Portuguese King lobbied the Pope to turn the Portuguese Chapter into a new order, the Order of Christ, who would become very influential in the discoveries (that is why its symbol, the Cross of Christ is used as a symbol of Portugal, especially in the navy and air force). Tomar, the headquarters is another place you would love to visit. The secret society that is represented throughout Regaleira is FreeMasonry (not as exciting as a secret knights templar, but very influential in the XIX and early XX century in Portugal). Enjoy your travels and keep safe!

Hi! Although I live in England, Sintra is my home county town and I must say you've shown it beautifully! Pity you didn't visit the castle and the village palace. Hope you'll go back again as there is loads to visit. One beautiful place which is a must visit is "Moinho Dom Quixote" restaurant/snack bar. This place is a converted Windmill on the other end of the hill, extremely exquisite and has stunning views to the coastal beaches and the Atlantic sea. You'd have to take an Uber or hire a car. Well worth it!!

Sintra is a beautiful town, and you are lucky because before the pandemic the town was packed with foreign tourists. I was in downtown Sintra in 2019 and I couldn't even walk in the streets because of the huge amount of people!! Tourism is back again, thankfully for the economy (Sintra without tourists was dead), however still in much lower numbers than before March 2020. TFTV!!!

3:56 FYI D Fernando was king-consort and later regent, after the death of the Queen. He left the Palace and the rest of the Sintra Estate in his will to his last wife, who was an American opera singer ( not very well accepted by Portuguese society because she was both an artist and a single mother). The will was then contested by his son, the King.
