In 1993 the BBC filmed 'Selected Exits' about the life of the Welsh writer and broadcaster Gwyn Thomas. Gwyn taught Spanish at a school in Barry, and Sir Anthony Hopkins (who had known Gwyn) delivered a masterclass in acting playing him in this movie.
Apologies for the dreadful video quality. Despite having an Oscar winning actor in the lead role, the film hasn't been shown on British TV for over 20 years and the BBC has no plans to put it on DVD.

Gwyn (Killer) Thomas was a teacher of mine when a pupil of Barry Grammar School. Sounds just like Gwyn Thomas - fantastic interpretation!!

One comment - there were never football posts on the playing fields of Barry Grammar School! 😉

I will watch Sir Anthony Hopkins in almost anything. I vaguely remember watching this in PBS many years ago. I wonder what Gwyn Thomas would think of the 21st century which seems to operate on two speeds in the English-speaking world. Hyper and self-absorbed athleticism and materialism and the instant and ongoing self gratification that led to so many deaths during Covid. Both oblivious to the supernatural and philosophical. Socialism, by the way, has been a disaster for the soul and the body. At the same time, as the grandson of Eastern Kentucky coal miner, I have something more than an appreciation for poverty and hunger. Life is a minefield at times. As Anthony Hopkins demonstrates, some the greatest "English" actors are Welsh: Richard Burton and Christian Bale come to mind.

I had the whole thing on vhs some years ago - I would pronounce 'twin horns of our direst pox' at every opportunity I got (still do). This should be an object lesson in just how comprehensive the decline of the BBC was - not just their agenda driven mono-culture of current affairs and news, nor the cliches or the idiocy. It was the walking away from writers who had something to say. They instead went for producers who had nothing to say and could do it cheaply and controversially. Change agents, I think they are called. We all knew it was incoming - John Birt sped it up.
