That's just a piece of kitchen sponge. It shortens the duration of the played note by dampening the strings

Hi. I bought the bass new in 1973 in New York while on a tour and had it since. Strings are flat wound and damper is just a plain kitchen sponge. Set it up myself, both pick ups at full and tone half way as usual. Many thanks !
