That's just a piece of kitchen sponge. It shortens the duration of the played note by dampening the strings

​@eloC311 It also cuts down on extraneous string noise, which is the biggest reason I like mutes - not always, but a lot of the time.

@PeterMayer...you should "get it right'. I can confirm 100% that is a 1973....I grew up playing around as a child with that ACTUAL bass........he is @AlexiaAntoniou Antonia Antoniou and my father by the way....... Do your research mate before you comment wrongly next time.....!!!!

That TONE!! Could you please tell us a little more about your beautiful bass? Are you the original owner? How is it set up, do you set it up yourself? And please tell us what strings you are using?

Hi. I bought the bass new in 1973 in New York while on a tour and had it since. Strings are flat wound and damper is just a plain kitchen sponge. Set it up myself, both pick ups at full and tone half way as usual. Many thanks !
