I've always loved medieval literature. I've been reading it since I was too young to understand it well. I do have a Masters degree in British Literature, but that isn't really a major factor in being able to teach or understand the material, in my opinion. I taught it for 13 years. Because my students generally wouldn't read anything I assigned them, I started reading it aloud in class. Well, 5 sections times 13 years means that I've read it over 60 times. Every time I did it, I had new insights and they began to compound. I also like researching and reading academic articles. So those naturally got rolled in. I'm glad you're enjoying the videos.

@Laura Alejandra Pastori That's a complicated question because I think the poet saw it as part of the epic tradition. He clearly connects it to the Iliad and Aeneid in his prologue and epilogue. That said, it doesn't really fit the definition by modern standards and fits much more clearly into the "Medieval Romance" category. This is because though Gawain goes on a quest and faces monsters, these elements are reduced to the level of montage or plot devices to showcase the courtly love and chivalry struggles that make Gawain's conflict almost more internal than external. So, I guess if I was pressed to answer, I'd say that it's at its core a Medieval Romance, but one that is presented to the audience in a familiar Heroic Epic structure that acts as a veneer to the whole piece.
