Step-by-step instructions on how to raise the mast and rig the Siren 17 sailboat solo. Note that at 3:00, when demonstrating how to setup the mast, I changed my technique a bit. I now step up the mast using both hands and once up, I take out the slack from the jib halyards and secure it with the mast swivel cam-cleat prior to go the bow to attach the headstay. Much easier this way.

Thanks. One thing I do differently is that instead of pulling on the jib halyard while lifting the mast with one hand, I now just raise the mast with both hands and then, take out the slack from the jib halyard and cleat it ounce the mast is fully vertical and secure.

Really important to have a mast with the base cut to a radius. Other wise the standing rigging will be strained.

@@siren17 If the bottom of the mast is square on the bottom when tilted back the mast must first rise to overcome the 90° portion because it has to rotate around the mast tabernacle bolt. Sort of like having square tires on your car or bicycle, it has to bump up then go down. So a radius must be cut or ground based on the radius From the bolt which secures the mast to the tabernacle. Perhaps the mast already has been modified. I had to do this for my Catalina 25 swing keel which I trailered often. I had a gin pole system which allowed this to be done. When I first unstepped the mast, the standing rigging was damaged due to this very reason. Live and learn. The forces can be quite great.

Nice new Tohatsu 6hp 25 inch shaft Sail Pro should be more than adequate for a Siren 17.
@siren17
@siren17 3 жыл бұрын
I have a 3.5HP 20" long shaft. I considered the 6hp Pro too but is I think it's a bit too heavy (65lbs vs. 35lbs) and requires an external tank... That said, the 25" shaft would be better.

Great Video! You helped give me confidence to raise my mast. I am thinking of putting that quick release or stay tensioner on my fore stay . Did you need to shorten the cable?
@siren17
@siren17 2 жыл бұрын
One thing I changed in my mast stepping technique is that I now don't try to pull on the jib halyard as I am lifting the mast up. I just have it ready with the jib attached, lift the mast with both hands (more power and more secure) and once it's all the way up, I raise the jib with one hand while holding the mast with the other and secure the halyard in the swivel cam-cleat prior going at the bow to secure the headsty. And yes, you'd have to shorten the stay to make room for the tensioner and that model of tensioner only has 3 holes to make adjustments in 1/2" increment... It drove my rigger a bit nuts, he had to recut the headstry twice. Now, i am told the stock tensioner for the Catalina 22 fits the Siren perfectly without the need to shorten the headstay. It's a different model that threaded on one side a bit like a turnbuckle and I guess is the exact same length than the Siren 17 headstay turnbuckle.

@@siren17 Thanks so much for the tips. I have installed the cam cleats for the halyards and found it a little awkward lifting with one hand , next time I will try two. What do you think about adding another attachment point on the mast above the original in order to correct the difference in length when installing a quick tensioner?

Just bought a Vagabond 17. It's a similar setup. This is my first boat and I am ordering new sails. I think I am going to get it with a loose foot on the boom and nylon slugs for the mast. Any thoughts on that? Yours seems to be rigged with bolt rope for both.

L’enrouleur n’est pas sur l’étai vous est il possible d’enrouler partiellement ?
@thierryhumeau337
@thierryhumeau337 Жыл бұрын
