This is the best explanation of pharyngealized consonants that I have found.

That thing with "AHHHHH" to pronounce the pharyngeal h was fantastic! Thanks :)
@huttarl
@huttarl 3 жыл бұрын
I don't understand how the "h" sound expressed in "AHHH" is supposed to be different from the English "h" as in "hat". Maybe some people make the "AHHH" sound down in their throat after drinking a cold drink, and others don't.
@maymeg6777
@maymeg6777 3 жыл бұрын
@@huttarl Th h sound is made by the vocal fold so you don’t need effort in your throat. On the other hand the Arabic pharyngeal ha sound needs swallowing movement, where the epiglottis is about to fold, which is perfectly exact same sound with “AHHHHH” after you swallowed something.

Thank you for this. It is difficult but I will try. I think I need a video where they just show the letter and make the sound so I can just play it on repeat for 20 minutes. I need to head them all.

Choir really helped me with the trilled R. Those Latin songs are unforgiving phonetically but at least they weren't German.

There's a big difference between MSA in this video and MSA in, say, Levantine Arabic. e.g., when there's an emphatic sound in a word, other sounds that can be usual and emphatic (like Seen and Saad) become emphatic, too. and also the L becomes L as in 'mole'. Can't think of any good examples tho sorry :D

In standard Arabic خ and غ are the uvular consonants /χ/ and /ʁ/ respectively not the velar /x/ and /ɣ/, as in some dialects like Egyptian Arabic.

I actually found it harder to learn a proper trilled ر than to learn ع, I don’t know why but I’ve always found throatier consonants easier than ones that rely too much on the tip of the tongue

I have a question. According to the IPA, the epiglottal fricative is represented by the symbols ʜ (voiceless) and ʢ (voiced), being [ħ] the symbol for the voiceless faringeal fricative. What are we really talking about when it comes to the sound of the letter ح?

Thanks for a helpful video. There seems to be a mistake at 4:19 where ث instead of ل is written on the right side of the screen. At 13:36 you mention linking below to a teacher on youtube, but I don't see that link. At 14:53 you mention attached mp3s, but I don't see them.

Are you doing all the voices in this video? If so, you've found your own voice in Arabic. Once one achieves this one can sound native in that language. As children imitate their role model at learning their mother tongue.
