It’s my understanding the straightness of an arrow is only measured over a 28” span by the manufacturer. That’s why cutting both ends is effective. The length of your arrow makes it kind of impossible to remove enough from either end.
@averagejackarchery
@averagejackarchery 3 жыл бұрын
Spine is measured over the 28". Runout for straightness is measured at the full length. Otherwise they could falsely advertise arrows at certain straightness tolerances.

Um, He did that for finding the spine for Trad Bows not compounds. He uses the RF Test Kit incl. various various field points to find the proper spine for your bow/arrow set up. He also, bare shaft tunes each arrow. Oh, FYI FOLKS: Spine marked on the arrows are based on 28". so if you shoot a longer arrow (IMHO-29.5/30+). You may need to go to a stiffer spine. Check the spine chart on your arrow. The opposite for shorter length arrows (IMHO 26.5-27ish inches). PS The Orions are doing very well in my testing vs Apollos. Oh, hey!! We do also have one other thing in common. We both really like Black Hornets & Stingers.

Don't know how I missed this Bow'vlog. Your reference to shorter draw and weight stuck a cord, are daughter was just recently sized for new arrows when we had our Bows tuned up. The Arrows I believe are Beman. No particular reason for the brand...they were on the clearance table. She's 1/2" taller, her strength has increased. These arrows are much smaller in Dia. than anything in her kit. They up'd her draw wt., these new arrows hit hard, and her grouping is tighter. I'm going to take a Sirius look at the Orion & Vulcan arrows for 2021 hunting season

Sadly I got these about a month ago due to this video and me getting a new bow (80lb PSE EVL34) and I was so excited. I only got 6 to test out and boy am I glad I did. I paid for .001 straightness, hand squaring, component installation, and spine aligning. I swear they spun like .006 arrows from grande mountain. They were drawing figure 8s. I gave him the benefit of the doubt and un-installed the ethics components to see if maybe they were just not installed great but the things still spun like garbage

You cut your losses or finally get them spinning good? I just recently bought 18 of these thinking they looked like an awesome arrow to play with. Decided to run the ethics components and they were spinning awful tbh. I thought it was the components even though I've ran ethics on other arrows in the past and never had a problem. Just pulled the posts out cut about 1/8 of an inch off the shafts resquared and decided to spin the bare shafts. Now I'm watching them wobble right in front of me. I've run out of room to cut any shorter and don't want to try another insert option just for it to be the shafts. Pretty disappointing tbh I'm hoping this is just a bad batch but I don't know what to do with these at this point.

I went to a 125 and I think it was just too much for the 400. looking at moving to a 300 for next yr. I only shoot a 27” arrow and pulling 70lbs so I might give these a try. I’m in PA as well. So I have a couple thoughts, the first is would this technically count as a tapered arrow with the larger point out front and the smaller diameter shaft? I think it would accomplish the same goal of having the back end thinner than the insert. Also one thing I just thought of about the ranch fairy process of tuning the arrow to the bow is that this could allow you to use the exact same bow with different weight arrows and if you have a sight with a dove tail you could just swap out the sight depending on the arrow so you don't have to retune the bow and redo your sight tape every time you want to go from a hog arrow or a deer arrow. It would add a couple hundred extra bucks to the setup but it would save a tone of time. Also a lot of people have different bows for different hunting situations so that could actually end up saving money

What about recurve? Can't change the draw weight. If I want to get more FOC, putting heavy weight in front, like putting heavy brass insert and heavy point, let's say 100 grain brass insert and 150, total 250 grains weight, that really weaken the spine. So, should I use more stiffer spine arrows? Most spine charts don't show point weight for spine over 150 grains.
@averagejackarchery
@averagejackarchery 3 жыл бұрын
Recurve is not nearly as energy efficient or forceful. Unless you're shooting over 45# at a decent draw length of 29"+, I wouldn't worry.

Been shooting the hunting public vector HMR micro diameter arrows. I’m about to buy some of these Orion’s. Only because the shaft weight of the HMR is crazy. Like 12.8GPI. The Orion’s are much lighter. I’m at 725 grains right now. Bones don’t stop em at all if I pull one. But I think I’m gonna bump down to 600 grain and higher FOC for these Orion’s.

The ethics inserts are cut off not break off. That is to elevate the insert from breaking inside the shaft over its life. Something to think about interns of adjusting your bow to shoot the arrow weight you want. You don’t change a rifle to shoot a certain bullet weight you change the components of the ammo like your powder but not the rifle (bow)
@averagejackarchery
@averagejackarchery 3 жыл бұрын
Using the comparison of, "not changing the bow because I can't change my gun" is about as relavent as saying, "I don't change the oil in my car because I can't change the oil in my bike". Arguably the worst apple to oranges comparisons I wish folks would stop trying to make.
@sheldonwhitcher4711
@sheldonwhitcher4711 3 жыл бұрын
@@averagejackarchery I didn’t say you CAN’T change a gun. I said you DON’T change a rifle. If your bow is straight and in time why would you change it to shoot a certain arrow build? Why not change arrow weight and spine to shoot right with your bow. You and the bow are the the only 2 constants in the whole process. Keep that the same and find what works best with those constants.
@averagejackarchery
@averagejackarchery 3 жыл бұрын
"The only two constants"? Arrow. Zero moving parts. Bow. At least 10, and quite violently. Human body. Unlimited angle and range potential. Yet the arrow is the inconsistent thing here...?

@@averagejackarchery when someone is using properly adjusted bow and a good comfortable stance. That gives you the repeatable shot. Why would you bend the bow “adjust bow including adjusting cam timing” to an arrow. Jack, can you change the spine on a arrow in relationship to weight? Example; Take a 340 arrow and shorten the shaft by x-amount to turn it into a 300 spine like shaft? I get confused with the relationship of length. I wrote before that I have a 29 inch draw. Shooting 58-pounds. My broadheads are 125 grains which I use SEVR broadheads. Because of the length of the broadhead approximately 2 inches less the screw in part, that means my overall length is 31 inches! Does this change my spine? Do I shorten my arrow to compensate for the increase length.??????? Sorry for a long and drawn out question? God bless and thank you Jack..... Mike

@@averagejackarchery Nate, i'm glad you feel the same. I view them as it's own entity. My question is aside from broad heads, can you get away with cheap components on an arrow?
@averagejackarchery
@averagejackarchery 3 жыл бұрын
@@robertdeis132 I usually stick with the components that are stock with the arrow. Victory makes the best stock components straight out of the package in my opinion, but Ethics is a clear winner when it comes to premium.

Hey I’m looking at trying these out. I shoot an Elite Kure at 26 inch draw, 70lbs, and 80% let off. Would this arrow be good for me to shoot around 450 grains to 500 grains, with A FOC around 21+? I’m looking at the 300 spine, cut to 27 inches, with around a 125gr insert with a 100gr fixed blade.
@averagejackarchery
@averagejackarchery 3 жыл бұрын
I think these arrows are an excellent choice for someone looking to push FOC over the "Ashby Level" of 19% or more! I'm a big fan of hunting arrows between 450-500 grains so I really don't think you could go wrong.
@kadepoole313
@kadepoole313 3 жыл бұрын
I believe I’m just going to build an arrow between those number and then just tune my elite to shoot them. Do these need a specific broadhead size? I’ve looked at the Black Eagle Carnivore series with 18.5 FOC.

Light GPI. Somewhere in the 8s. A GT Velocity in 300 would suit the bill and then whatever weight you put in the front end will be killer. Same with VAP from Victory. The Orion are also and excellent option as shown here if you have the coin.

This "cutting off both ends" stuff is nonsense IMO. If those shafts truly have a runout of *one thou* over a ~30" distance, you're not going to make a nit of difference taking an inch or so off either end. Think about it guys. This is a composite tube with an OD of .246. Do you _really_ think taking material off _both_ ends instead of _one_ is going to make a damn bit of difference, especially considering environmentals and that in use it'll have weight hung off one end and be subjected to acceleration up to over 300fps in an instant, and even faster deceleration depending on what it hits? Have you seen the deflection even the stiffest shafts undergo when leaving a compound bow? You would be _much_ better served putting that time and effort into practicing your form than determining how to nip your shafts... in my humble opinion.
