Amuses me that the movie they disliked the most is the one that has truly stood the test of time, and is seen as a classic in modern horror, a teaching tool as to how to do low budget RIGHT, and is just a damn fun ride every time. RIP dudes, but you got this one WRONG. ;)

They both totally dug Dawn of the Dead by GA Romero, and in fact, to be real, it was not until Evil Dead 2 that Raimi Brothers had the funding to make a true movie.
@videodromeTVversion4 жыл бұрын
I'd say they were too picky. The problem was that they weren't ready for the 80's. They were stuck in the old days of horror expecting everything was going to be shadows and roaring monsters who didn't tear people to shreds, etc. They couldn't imagine gore was imaginative, etc. If _Evil Dead_ had been _Evil Dead II,_ they would be singing a different tune. (Which proves _Evil Dead_ is better.)

Siskel and Ebert will always have a nostalgic place in our collective memory-I love them the same as every other 80s kid-but they had terrible, middlebrow taste, and they routinely and embarrassingly got swept up in the moral panics of the 70s and 80s. They missed everything that was most exciting and new, and lavishly praised safe and familiar movies that were forgotten six months after they were released. Naturally, they were obsessed with the Oscars, and talked about them constantly. While the Oscars were celebrating Out of Africa, The Dresser, and Children of a Lesser God, remarkable movies from Robocop to Eric Rohmer’s best comedies went ignored. PS: Siskel and Ebert seemed-almost intentionally-to miss the point of many popcorn movies, and I think it’s because of their class prejudice. They applauded condescending, humorless do-gooder movies ABOUT the poor but FOR the middle class (e.g., Hoop Dreams, El Norte), but any movie that working class people were likely to enjoy, they seemed very skeptical of. Anyone who went to a Friday the 13th movie on opening night, or who saw those dumb 80s teen comedies like Porky’s at the drive-in, understands how and why those movies were fun. Even today, they remain guilty pleasures. They’re meant to work the way haunted houses and rollercoasters work, and on those terms, they often succeed. Not every movie is trying to be Orson Welles’s Chimes at Midnight. There’s a term you used to see in reviews-“the moron trade.” For instance, the Newsweek magazine review of Bonnie and Clyde dismissed it as “a squalid shoot-em-up for the moron trade.” After the New Yorker praised the movie, Newsweek realized they had misread the room-what they had thought was a movie for white trash was being embraced by coastal elites-so they retracted the review and replaced it with a rave. So many of Siskel and Ebert’s reviews of the iconic movies of their era can be summed up as: “a squalid shoot-em-up for the moron trade.” Whether it was something mundane like Halloween 4 or something brilliant and game-changing like Evil Dead or The Thing, the only thing Siskel and Ebert seemed to notice was whether the film’s target audience was college-educated people or “the moron trade,” i.e., people who clean buildings and repair automobiles for a living.

It's wonderful to watch two smug critics dislike a movie that would become a classic and horror-lover's favorite. It's the criticisms, though. Siskel's over-exaggeration of how much unshowable gore is in the movie and Ebert's criticism of its narrative spine and character development; the latter being a joke given his love for Stranger Than Paradise, a movie with absolutely no character development and a weak 'plot'.

I totally disagree with you both. The Survivors is a very unfunny movie that does not gel because their was no control of the comedy or the drama- it did not know what it wanted to be. Sadly Robi n Williams was allowed to do his comedy act and does not form a interesting character-just his act over and over again (nothing new). Miscasting hurts this film - Williams,Reed, and Matthau do not gel together and feels like all of them doing their skit to get to the end.

Although "Evil Dead" was not my cup of tea genre-wise, I couldn't help but acknowledge Sam Raimi's obvious capacity as an uncompromising visionary filmmaker and what I saw as the movie's extremely confident sense of itself. In partial agreement with Ebert, Raimi does seem to "distill" his film into the essence of the genre in which he was working, which is a difficult and risky task for anyone to do so without making a bland, dull, derivative, and forgettable film, all of which "Evil Dead" is certainly not. Therefore, I felt more positively than negatively towards it, despite the guts.
