It was great seeing two amazingly classy movie reviewers give props to a movie and the young directors the Hughes Brothers. They were in my television production class and would play their early films in class. I wonder what they thought of Dead Presidents which was quite an interesting twist on the Vietnam war era type storyline and also heist film. They also made some interesting films later on like From Hell and also The Book of Eli plus other projects. I remember seeing their picture in a thai magazine for Book of Eli which was quite a trip. On a different note its great seeing these old clips of Siskel and Ebert but sad that they're gone as it would be interesting to see what they thought of the movies of today (or maybe how worse the stream Hollywood movies got later on in the future)

Yeah. The writing and portrayal of the Mr Stevens was one of the best character studies I’ve seen in film. It also dealt with deep themes of changing times, duty, responsibility, honor, desire and regret in a really nuanced manner all while being mostly set in one location.

Most of these were pretty good but on top of these I would add or move higher "The Fugitive" and "A Bronx Tale" and Addams Family Values" and "Gilbert Grape". Shadowland's so-called great acting couldn't hide a poor script. I didn't care about the people in Shadowlands.

First, "underrated" is the most over-used word on KZfaq. Second, it's usually not true. Angela Bassett is not; she's been in many well-loved and successful movies, gotten plenty of award nominations for film and TV, and continues to get work. Third, who is "underrating" a movie or an actor? They never say.
@savage_skirt5386

@@sandal_thong8631 I will agree that the term is overused online --- however, I do feel that it is a fair/warranted assessment of someone, if/when they haven't received the acclaim/recognition that they could/should have had. She is rather good. Her career should have really taken off after the Tina Turner biopic --- but it didn't really.

Gene viewed 1993 as quite possibly his favorite post-1970s year for movies, particularly American ones. Runners-up on Gene's list for 1993 were "The Remains of the Day", "In The Name of the Father", "What's Love Got to Do With It" (which was on Roger's top ten, as aforementioned), "Household Saints", "What's Eating Gilbert Grape", "Shadowlands", "The Story of Qiu Xu" and "Untamed Heart". Schindler's List is such overhyped drudgery .. fantasy movies are only good when they're not trying to fool the audience into believing it's real history. When it comes to Spielberg's contrived wartime dramas, he hits the nail on the head with Saving Private Ryan. At least that movie was fun to watch. I'm so tired of being beat over the head with stories about the "6 million" being forced into gas showers and ovens. zzzzzzzzz BORING

@@cherylhulting1301 It's significant only in the way it was exaggerated to change so much of the social/political structure of the world. Short Cuts was very good . Based on the posts below I do appreciate why people feel The Remains of the Day . True Romance , Naked etc should be on it and while I have not really figured where I would place them I do think that that they were better than The Fugitive, The Joy Luck Club, Menace 11) .

Less so than it appears. Tombstone wasn't screened for critics because the studio felt they had a bomb in their hands. As Gene said in their official review of the movie, "it was well hidden from us...we were *prevented* from seeing it!" They didn't get to see it until February 1994. Roger's review was very positive, and subsequent mentions in other reviews suggest that his appreciation of it enhanced over time. Gene gave it a marginal thumbs down because the post-Corral material was too action-oriented for him. But it couldn't have been featured here because they hadn't seen it yet!

1993 had sooo many better movies than most of S&E's picks: True Romance, Kieslowski's Trois couleurs Bleu, De Palma's Carlito's Way, Red Rock West, In the Line of Fire, Cliffhanger, Last Action Hero, Dave, Philadelphia, Judgment Night, The Scent of Green Papaya, Arizona Dream, Fearless, Matinee, Sonatine... Hot Shots! 2... ^^ good year.

Three Colors, Red Rock West, and Green Papaya hit theatres in 1994 and some of those made their lists. Sonatine wasn't released in the States until 1998.

You know, as a half German, Ebert had little choice but to put Schindler's list at the top of his list. Siskel looked at him hard, then gave him a patronising 'good...' for his decision.:) Some of those films, however, were exceptional. The Age of Innocence, I could tell, looked brilliant, and Ebert, under different circumstances, would've opted for Scorsese's picture.

You look at the state of motion pictures in 1993 vs movies in 2022....what the hell happened? Why is no-one making quality, thoughtful movies anymore? Tragic. S & E would be horrified by the state of the arts now.

That received Thumbs Down from Siskel, quite solidly so, whereas Roger praised it highly and gave a 3 1/2 star review (out of 4). It was one of their biggest disagreements of the year. But with so many 4 star reviews from Roger in '93 it wouldn't even have made his top 20.

Yeah that Schindlers list was very violent. But it’s nothing new it’s the same old story we’ve seen a thousand times, of how the Nazis hated the Jews, just more of it, done in a different way. And look how many pictures have come out since 1993 about this same subject.

I totally agree with Gene. The early to mid 70's was the last time truly provocative and unconventional cinema was appreciated by a wide audience in the US. Of course, I am not saying no good cinema has been made since then and today, I think filmmakers are enjoying a greater amount of freedom due to digital technology.
