The remote community of the Tiwi Islands, located 80km north of the Australian mainland, has a thriving gay and trans community known as the Sistagals. More than 5 percent of the Tiwi population identify as a Sistagal with most of them living publicly as women and observing local Indigenous traditions. In this episode of Australiana, VICE embeds with the Sistagals to explore the intersection of traditional culture and gender identity. We follow the story of Laura, who at the age of 33 has been awaiting gender reassignment hormones since she was 10 years old. Her access has been complicated by the island's limited access to doctors, let alone hormone treatment. This documentary explores the push-pull the Sistagals experience living on their remote Tiwi home, while wanting to find love in the city and start families of their own.

9 Year Old Cyberbully Sweetie, you need to learn actual history, not some Stormfront BS. People of color have contributed a lot DESPITE being treated poorly and marginalized. White people have gone into indigenous places and created havoc and death-far from creating, they have been destructive forces. I suspect you’re one of those fearful, weak, white men who secretly live in fear that they aren’t good enough. Work on yourself rather than trying to tear down others. Peace!

As a male, I ended up doing drugs around 15 1/2 and got clean 10 years later. Even getting clean my testosterone was 93ng/dl and the average is 240-800. So my testosterone was at 1/3 of what it needed to be naturally and I got on the testosterone shot. As a cis male knowing I needed it, I could only imagine being trans and needing hormones. That has got to be hard knowing you need something your body can't produce in order to feel normal. I'm so proud of Laura, I hope she succeeds more ways than one.

@@Scrapla1 the only thing a child is getting until puberty is blockers which is reversible and just pauses a puberty they don't want to experience and don't align with until they are at least 16 and can make a more informed decision for themselves around irreversible hormones like estrogen or testosterone. You are just repeating bullshit claims spouted by conservative media. Also kids are not getting gender reassignment surgery, you do realise that shit is like over $90k in Australia and over $40k even in Thailand. Only a very small percentage of trans people even get bottom surgery because it's too expensive. You want nothing more than to force trans children to experience an irreversible puberty they can not take back which just leads to higher suicide rates.

This breaks my heart. They all have such simple dreams. Have a partner, settle down and live a normal life. Stuff so many of us take for granted. The saddest part is that for a lot of them, they'll never achieve their dream. It reminds me so much of Venus Extravaganza from Paris Is Burning. She professed the same simple wishes - a man, a home, a washer and dryer... and several months later Venus was murdered. It still makes me cry to think about. We must do more to protect our trans brothers and sisters. They want nothing more than to live a simple life like you and I.

@@fancyfeast5086! What's the sideeffects? What can happen? Doctors should inform about that, so they can take their own informed decision. Maby it's right for them, maby not,but we have to respect their decision. Doctors and their closest, can respectfully say their concerns, in a loving way, but accept them for their decisions and them as people, if they agree or not. Everyone else, have no business telling them what s right or wrong. Just be polite and treat them as anyone else. Miss pronounce their preferred gender, is like insulting them, and I can't understand why it's so hard for some to accept that's what is respectful and even if they doesn't think it's right, isn't their well being more important than you demonstrating your own opinion, hurting them at the same time!?
@fancyfeast5086
@fancyfeast5086 5 жыл бұрын
NORTH Line I don’t understand what you are saying as I have said specifically that their well being is more important than others opinion but there’s a difference between opinion and fact. With surgery and hormones that don’t belong in the body at the quantities that are given to them there are great risks and complications but as far as mental health experts and medical professionals are concerned they say the benefits outweighs the risks..the benefits being that the patient isn’t going to take their own life because they can’t be the ‘gender’ they prefer..so why not give them the next best thing? Risky medication and surgery that could kill them?..it’s a double edged sword regardless. Also if someone doesn’t want to address a transgendered person by their preferred pronoun then they have every right since this isn’t about what the transgendered feels, it’s about forcing others to perceive their reality. You don’t know unless you’ve seen it with your own eyes, I have and I’ve spent the last 20 years involved in this..not only my ex but others in the same circle. It’s not all rainbows and lollipops..far from it.

I know...it saddens me when i hear of chocolate color discrimination. I worked with a girl who has skin like this & i thought it was the most beautiful skin tone id ever seen. I would tell her all the time how beautiful her complexion was. My co-workers would ask me all the time-why would i tell the dark girl she was beautiful? I didn't know how prevalent the dark skinned vs light skinned thing was.☹

Josephine, if you’re talking about Thailand, then no. Their doctors profit greatly from all the so called “sexual reassignment” surgery (butchery) and related “treatments” (pumping people full of sex hormones) so it’s a very lucrative market for them. Here in the western world, it’s always been considered a mental illness. And it is. In the last few years we have seen a very aggressive campaign of gay rights and the “me too” movement. Do you think it’s just a coincidence that suddenly you’re not allowed to call this garbage out for what it is? Sexual perversion.

They pay more because they're an island community. That's standard. The problem they're complaining about is that in many rural communities in Australia, there are restrictions on how much alcohol indigenous people can buy because they have low tolerance levels and a high levels of addiction. So they're saying on their island they're only allowed six standard drinks a night and are now only allowed to import light beer, so if they want anything more they need to go into the city.

Why is it you have to go through such extensive therapy just to get approved for reassignment surgery. Here’s a fun fact, the impersonation procedures and hormones and garb they encase themselves in does not lower the suicide rate. Well 1% lower. Sad that this documentary doesn't acknowledge that marginalization of indigenous people rather than 'acceptance' has a lot to do with the higher rates of suicide. Systematic racism rather than gender has more to do with this. I hate how Australia continues to treat aboriginals -like second class citizens. No! going to a gay pride is not progress neither is going for Mardi Gras in a city that you are intentionally cut off from...the disenfranchisement! Autonomy for these islands where indigenous people have been pushed to the margins,that would be progress! It's criminal to have native populations stuck in poverty, invisible and marginalized this much in a modern day 'democracy' ...one day things will change for aboriginals.
