My mother was originally from Russia and she and my father only listened to classical music. One day, she saw this movie in HBO and she was so simply perplexed and hypnotized with the subject and specially with Whoopi Goldberg's role and acting that she ordered the DVD the following day. I remember her watching this movie with her and my father, time and again (!) and laughing to the point of tears in their eyes. They are both gone now, but I still remember those evenings with them.

I always tear up at Sister Mary Robert's parts. You can see how even just in this short clip she went from being nervous to confident and happy, and it's not just the fact that she's good at something, it's the fact that she feels she has a place now, she can use her talents to contribute in her church, and can connect more closely to God. All things she clearly wanted/needed fulfilled through music, it's so beautiful.

I love how into it Deloris (Whoopi Goldberg's character) gets as the song progresses. This is a woman who's been struggling every day, feeling out of place and miserable in this convent. Now she's not only found something she can do well, she's clearly having the time of her life leading this choir.
@crowtservo9 ай бұрын
And even better she got more applause at this mostly empty church than she did in a casino full of people.
@VereentisАй бұрын
Well, she was a singer - she might thought, that the religious songs wasn't really her style, but in fact it was really close to her, in the moment she tried in a more gospel-like way. After all, the gospel was the way how the firstly converted African people see the Christianity - "God loves us, which makes us happy, and we let the entire world know about it". Of course you can feel it in their songs as well. The head nun might be disapproved it first, as it wasn't the "traditional" way to sing them, but in fact, it was the traditional way to do for Deloris (even if she didn't realised). Also, they still had the proper message, it was only in a way, which stuck more in the people's ears.
This is what choir practice feels like when everyone likes the song and puts in full effort

For anyone wondering, the Latin lines in the upbeat version are from the hymn, "O Sanctissima" and the "Sanctus". The real tune of the first is "Sicilian Mariners' Hymn", and is played at Christmas as "O du fröliche". The second one is sung at every Mass, in Latin or the vernacular, before the Consecration. This is what they mean: "Mater amata, intermerata" ("Mother beloved, undefiled") "Sanctus, Sanctus Dominus!" ("Holy, Holy Lord!") "Virgo, respice; Mater, aspice" ("Virgin, consider us; Mother, look at us")

This is master class in story telling. The choir nailed the slow version of the song - it showed that they were still very talented and dedicated, and still very comfortable in the "old ways" of the world. However, things get much more complex with the fast-paced part (an analogy for the convents' need to change with the times in order to save not only their congregation but also the downtrodden city around them). You can see that older nuns are somewhere between unsure and anxious when the fast part begins, and by the end they have gained confidence, even if some of them couldn't quite get the beat down with their clapping (some even have looks of disbelief by the end - perhaps an allegory of faith vs doubt?). It was charming and also realistic, as they were not quite yet all together. Mary Clarence gives a motherly wink of assurance at 1:17 as to say "yall got this!" The nod of approval from Mary Lazarus to Mary Clarence at 2:01 lets us know that she is fully behind her new choir leader now, and that any resentment between the two has been settled; and by 2:33 Mary Lazarus is excited for her second solo, perhaps re-energizing her lost passion for music. At 2:10, we see a very nervous Mary Roberts begin to show off her talent, as the other choir members look on in genuine shock that she's got that voice. This confidence will grow throughout the movie. And we see Mary Patrick in her own world just belting out the big notes, never showing any shyness at all! Then we see some very rough characters outside who certainly had never been inside the church slowly get drawn in, with the Monsignor encouraging them to stay despite their rough looks. And by the end of the song even the once-bored altar servers - only there probably because their parents made them - were engaged and smiling. As applause erupts, we are ready for the second half of the movie, as the story will shift away from a basic witness protection comedy into a much deeper story of life and second chances. Without this scene, the sisters do not become renewed and re-establish their mission of serving an impoverished and forgotten neighborhood. Without this scene, Mother Superior has no protagonist in Mary Clarence to help her get out of her staid ways of thinking. And without this scene, we cannot see a changing of heart and ultimately a renewed sense of purpose in Dolores' life. PS - Maggie Smith is a legend. She conveys sooo much in this scene without ever opening her mouth.

And yet, it is an undeniable fact that trying ‘to be hip/trendy,’ and ‘get with the times’ has resulted in the decimation of women’s vocations. The nuns’ religious orders dropped like a stone as a result of adopting this attitude. It doesn’t attract young people as the movie would have one believe. It’s a complete con job. The religious orders of nuns that are flourishing are those that would never sing the worldly irreverent segment of the hymn. It’s really ‘hymnicide.’ It’s not about “honoring” the Blessed Mother, It’s about self-indulgence …. feeeeeeling good.” Mass attendance in Catholic churches that embraced this self-indulgent ‘worship’ has declined greatly. The traditional Catholic societies are growing with great rapidity. They are the ones attracting young families. Sadly Sister Act was a joke perpetrated on millions of unsuspecting people who know little to nothing of the richness of the contemplative life.

Of note, the portrayal of Sister Mary Roberts gaining more confidence in this piece is incredibly spot on. After her first solo (when she lights up), her body language is still very rigid compared to the other nuns, who are more relaxed and grooving along (sister Mary Patrick especially). She knows she can sing, but she still has to learn how to relax and enjoy herself and that's something which takes time. Full credit to the actress here for pulling this off so well.

Thank you for writing all the words to this definitely beautiful holy hymn. I have auditory processing problems. If you aren't familiar, it takes longer for words ( in this case a fast moving song ) to reach my brain and then be processed. By the time processing happens, I am probably behind . Using close captioning on TV has helped me understand words to songs when I was growing up! Now that you supplied the words, I can sing the song all I want. Merry Christmas and bless you for your kind gesture! 🎄🎄🎁🎁🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🎶🎵🎤🎼

Part of what made it so memorable is the sort-of "underdog" storyline, where a struggling parish in the inner-city just needs to find the right people to bring itself back on-track, even to the point where the Pope visits for Sunday worship.
