You know, as an Arab I have to say I respect Israel for their military excellence, I believe the Arabs had a big ego and they underestimated their enemy, don't ever underestimate your enemy.

The more I watch these documentaries about the 6 Day War the I understand what was going on around my ship at that time. On June 7th 1967 I spent my 19th birthday on a gun mount on the USS Sylvania AFS-2 only 13 miles off the coast of Egypt. We were the closest and only American war ship close to the coast. The USS Liberty was the same distance but off the coast of Israel, she was not a war ship. I'm beginning to understand why my ship was so close to the battles. My ship was a Combat Supply Ship, a new state of the art supply ship had the best 3" inch 50 radar controlled automatically loaded double barrel guns. We had 4 gun mounts. We drilled all the time when at sea and were highly efficient, fully capable of shooting any jet fighters. The ship was 600 feet long and could do over well over 20 knots at flank speed. During the entire war we stayed exactly 13 miles off the coast. We weren't sure why at the time, but now it makes sense. A big threat was the Russian fleet possibly entering to support Egypt. With my ship being in the right positions the Russians couldn't do that because they would enter our security zone and if they did that, the carriers would launch their planes. I can see now that my ship played a very important role. Back then the naval security zone was very strictly defended. On one occasion when resupplying the carrier a Russian sub entered the security zone and was sunk by 2 of our destroyers. It was funny because during the Six Day War the Egyptians were warned that if they came too close we would open fire. We could see on radar that Egyptian planes and naval vessels noticeably avoided our security zone. At the time the Sitxh Fleet Command was being changed. A carrier task force spent six month tours. So it was perfect timing that had two carrier task forces there. The Russians and Arabs went to great lengths to prevent any "misunderstandings" because we were eager for battle at the time. Few people today realize that the Mediterranean Sea was a very violent place back then. The Vietnam War got all attention, so folks back home didn't even know what was going on. Unlike Vietnam, we had the potential for a sea battle and it came pretty close several times. There were also communist militants that were very active, especially in Italy and Greece. All these videos of the Six Day War don't show a lot of what was going on then in regards to the US Navy. Thomas

Here's little known fact in those early hours of the 6 day war: That first day Units of the 2nd Marine Divn, Camp Lejuene, including my unit, 2nd Field Artillery (self propelled guns), where put on notice to get our gear ready for deployment, June 6th. By the afternoon of the 2nd day we were loading onto LSTs at Morehead City N.C. We spent the evening in the harbor waiting for orders to sail. By noon the following day we were ordered to stand down. United States Marines were locked loaded and ready to go. Excellent documentary.

Six days shall you work and on the 7th day you rest. You know GOD did all this for His people.

This documentary about the Six Days War in June of 1967 between the Jews of Israel and hostile Arab armies is balanced and based upon historical facts. Israel desires to dwell in shalom - peace with its Arab neighbours but is not afraid of them. Jews have a religious and an historical claim to all of the Land of Israel, Samaria and Judea and are there to stay. They will neither leave nor be forced to leave ! Zion refers to Jerusalem !
