1. Life is missery (expect to be dissapointed, manage your expectations and be greatful for the nice, sweet and amusing things) 2. Metta Bavana (kind thoughts, kind impulses regarding others. Start with someone you hate and than extrapolate to all people). Compassion is a learnable skill 3. Guanyin (mercy, compassion, kindness) 4. Wu Wei (not making an effort, going with the flow, but not laziness). To be wise is to have learnt how one must sometimes surrender to the whole universe. Realize when our wishes are in conflict with reality. The perspective about the events matters a lot 5. Bamboo as wisdom (be adaptable, like the bamboo) 6. Kintsugi (we're all flawed and that's ok)

One of my favorite Ancient Chinese sayings, very roughly and personally translated: "When heaven is about to assign important responsibility to anyone, it will start by making him suffer from frustration, depression, physical exhaustion, hunger, bad fortunes, overall making him grid through crippling mental and physical agony in every aspect of his life. Doing so as a way to prepare him with the iron resilience to take on the impossible task." The way I see it: life will inevitably go south and sh!t will hit the fan, instead of crying about it, put a more positive and productive spin on it. See the events as an opportunities to train yourself to be more resilience. This kinda mentality has helped me so much coping life. Ex: I was job searching 2 years ago and went through anger, frustration, depression for about 5 months with companies giving me false promises, embarrassments, and confusions. What I learned was that: reality will throw stones at you, don't get emotional about it, get proactive to handle it. Then after a while, things might get even worse, but if you keep pushing yourself forward, you might actually reach wherever you want to go.

I've always loved Eastern philosophy. I love Western philosophy too but there is something that seems a bit more elegant about Eastern philosophy.

A more accurate and less extreme translation is #1 "All life contains the causes of dissatisfaction ". #2 "The causes of dissatisfaction can be known" . #3 "A path leading to the elimination of the causes of dissatisfaction exists". #4 "The 8 fold path is the path leading to the ceasation of the causes of dissatisfaction ".

Got any recommendations in terms of translator? I've read this one [ www.amazon.de/gp/product/1484090748/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 ] and it felt rather modern, but it got the message across.

The Tao Te Ching is amazing. I read the version by Stephen Mitchell, highly recommend to anyone who wants to read it. This video honestly does not do Eastern Philosophy justice.

Give the guy a break. Nothing but negativity. He's taken on the gargantuan task of trying to elucidate some, not all Eastern philosophy concepts. Of course he's left pieces out. He's done a fine job considering and the aim is to give viewers something positive to take away, not cover everything in great detail.

Kintsugi and Zen are largely about how things are only the way they are from a certain perspective. The vase is only broken if you're looking at it as an ex-vase instead of a potential vase. Even if you never fix it, each piece of broken vase is a perfectly intact jagged piece of plaster. It's only a broken vase if you cling to the idea that a vase ever existed outside of your idea of it.

Oddly, the term broke in the west means no money to spend. A contrast of moral mental stamina from the east. Loa Tzu, even in his time was venturing away from all the chaos in his village, if I remember correctly was directed at the current emperor. He was kind enough(if not threatened) to jot down his exemplary fashions of life, and was only recently discovered in the 90s if im not mistaken. Great video!

You could also include the essence of Indian philosophy called advitha vadantha (the principle of non duality )propagated by great sages like Adi Sankara and Sri Ramana Maharshi.(his teaching explained in famous book “who am I”)

The historical applications of Eastern philosophy are wildly interesting. The Chinese revolution of the 1949 and the following Great Leap Forward between '59 to '61 under Chairman Mao was meant to instill a sense active engagement and empowerment into Chinese peasants. The philosophy of Daoism and wu wei systematically engendered into the peasant population an acceptance of warlord exploitation for hundreds of years. While economically and materially Chairman Mao's contributions remain controversial, culturally, the Chairman instilled a voracious empowerment in the peasants of population who pushed back against the philosophy that had shackled them for hundreds of years.

South America has had a tradition of shamans, but not a modern (historic) form of philosophy. Don't expect TSOL to make a video on shamanic aboriginal cultures. Middle east, on the other hand, that could be a good TSOL video.

Wu Wei has helped me with mindfulness. It helps keep the ego quiet so I do not try to "act on" what is happening and instead simply be the observer. Very useful in business.

Unfortunately no. 1 and it's interpretation is just wrong due to bad translation. Buddha never said that as a general thing about life, but to his excessively ascetic first disciples. Moreover, the claim is that the unenlightened life is full of suffering. This subtle difference is important because the narrators interpretation against expectation and that good would be a "bonus" is not to be found in Buddhism [there is no bonus but consequences of cause and effect + the bliss of realizing uncaused nature of reality/mind]. As to suffering as a mark of existence (one of the 3 including impermanance and not-self), a better translation is unsatisfactoriness or sense of lack, to which suffering is an unskillful *response*.

+Arata Senpai I think it's because the translation reads, life is suffering. There's an awful lot about Buddhism which is misunderstood and for a large part of it, you really need to sit down and ask yourself these questions to see what you find out. Don't take his word for it, check it out!

BigHenFor I am not expert but have read little history, lot of 20th century US and European philosophers have influenced from Upanishads for example Emerson, Carl Jung, Voltaire.. also lot of Sri Buddha's philosophy were extensions of Upanishads. As Dr Santosh suggested we have no problem if title was 6 philosophical idea of Buddhist or from China it would have been OK. But creator used title Eastern Philosophical ideas and not mentioned any India philosophical ideas is not justice to the title.

A bit hypocritical when you yourself come from a misunderstood religion where everyone misunderstanding it, associates it with violence. I myself totally respect Islam, but I'm confused that people still make comments like this when we say time and time again that the actions of a few are not the fault of the religion.

The first noble truth in Buddhism is "life is awry or Dukkha" "the existence is imperfect. There's always something going wrong or unsatisfying among all happened" "Today we are young, 20 years old, fresh and strong, pretty or handsome, but 15 years later, something is going on with our body, not as beauty as 15 years ago, not as strong as 15 years ago. We need to do something to nurture our freshness or healthy." "Today is a sunny day, and I and friends are having appointment tomorrow we will hangout somewhere, but at the next day it is impromptu or out of sudden the heavy rain fall when we were about to hangout, what we need to do is wait until the rain stop." That what Buddhist follower must comprehend about life, to let them understand that it is natural phenomena, and let Buddhist understand how useless and unworthy to be despaired for any circumstances or situation that they are deal with. Instead of angry, Lord want us to face all problem nicely and wisely, not rebel on it or cry, not violently or gloomy mood.
