I get my books slabbed for display because the covers are beautiful art and some are a piece of history and my personal history as well as i can leave them to my kids when I'm gone

Regie Simmons IFBB Pro I’ll probably slab my Darth Vader #1 Hastings variant because Hastings Doesn’t exist anymore and I have two copy’s of the comic one is a variant and one is the normal cover and when I slab it I’ll Go with PGX because it’s cheaper then CGC and I’ll Display it because I love to Display things and I still have a raw version to read anytime I want

I've been buying CGC books and submitting raw books to CGC for years and I agree totally with what Regie says. The points he discusses are essential things to consider when you decide to buy a slab or submit to CGC. This video is great information for anyone new to graded books!

@@RegieCollects You got it! Question: Forgive me if you've ever done a video about this - but do you ever think about the time vs. bargain aspect of comic hunting? For example, I've recently come to the conclusion that in many instances, my time has become more valuable than bargain hunting for most, but not all comics that I desire. Sometimes pulling the trigger on a book which is priced a bit higher on Ebay, or at a comic shop is far superior than waiting until I come across it in nice condition at a discount, because of how scarce some books have become, particularly silver and bronze age titles. As an example, some books that this I decided to just buy outright online or in-store were Agents of Shield #1 (Steranko cover) and Astonishing Tales #25. Some collectors I know lean so heavily into finding deals, that I think they sometimes waste more time than they bargained for while on the hunt, when they could have easily pulled the trigger on something online. Of course, it's a balance. Sorry if this thread takes an eternity to read, but I'd love to hear your thoughts!
@RegieCollects
@RegieCollects 5 жыл бұрын
LOL. Every collector has a sweet spot. There are some guys that love hunting in the .50 and $1 bins. They enjoy spending hours hunting though long boxes for a deal. And, then there are guys like you and me. :-) I honestly don't have the patience for .50 and $1 bin hunting. At the end of the day, the hobby needs both types of collectors.
@joshuasky8041
@joshuasky8041 5 жыл бұрын
@@RegieCollects 100% - I was more of a dollar bin hunter when I first started the hobby and didn't have as good a job as I have now. But then I realized that none of the major keys I wanted were likely to be found in the dollar bin, and that my time had become far more valuable than it was before. So now I try to hunt for people who have larger and older collections (and have had success that way). I also snipe online and check out the walls at my local stores. From time to time I scope the bins, but I usually buy fun filler there.

Reason why I find it necessary to slab books is for he's preservation but il know what the true value is. When u collect high priced books especially raw there is draw backs to it. Unless the book you have is a "investment type book" then yes it's smart to slab it. Let's say something happens and you have no idea what the value to your books are because it's raw. How do u evaluate it? Sure u can say what you think the grade could be but that's here say. When u have let's say 100 books and they are all CGC'd you know without a doubt the value on it through eBay sales to retailers sites or GPA.. Raws you don't. One day might come along and u want to retire and sell the collection you have. If you want the most $$ for it then slab'ing is the smartest thing to do. Every high dollar book you collect is a asset any way u slice it. Some don't sit down and really think about it but it's a Asset!!!!.

Good video Regie!! We are in Knoxville for a quick getaway and happened to stumble on the Knoxville Comic Con yesterday and was able to "walk in" and buy a few speculation keys with the little time I had to walk around. I'm doing research on raw grading books with CBCS. This looks like a great alternative to slabbing, for me. I only want to slab if it makes sense.
@RegieCollects
@RegieCollects 6 жыл бұрын
So CBCS is grading raw books but not slabbing them? Are they in top loaders or some other type of protective sleeve? Sounds like its not a bad idea. It's a great way to provided some standardization.

Regie Simmons IFBB Pro cost effective alternative to slabbing. Books are evaluated then put into Mylar with tamper proof seals. I sent a few keys in to be evaluated and try the service. When they come back I'll do a video. Oh, the turnaround time is supposed to be 3-4 weeks. www.cbcscomics.com/rawgrade

Great points. I always submit 25 books at a time and ship my books to CGC usps next day air. You might think why next day air that’s $50 you could go 1st class or Priority for so much less. The answer is next day is by far the safest for your books. Every day the the post office has your books is a chance that they get damaged. I have seen Unboxing videos where all the books took a hit on the bottom corner during shipping and the grades were much lower then what was expected. I don’t want that to happen to anyone.
@RegieCollects

Well said brother. Sometimes it’s better to spend a little extra money to protect your items. I respect the approach. I typically send my books to CGC via FedEx for that very same reason. I want the least amount of transit time.

Definitely an informative video. I rarely buy a slabbed book on eBay because in most cases for me I have gotten them raw and sent them out to CGC at a lower cost. In most cases I am assuming eBay sellers are raising the prices because they did all the work and they are looking for profit which I completely understand. Turn around times for CGC is way better than CBCS. I am a firm believer in delayed gratification anyway.

Very interesting and informative! I have alot of expensive books that I'm thinking of getting cleaned and pressed and graded.. And I already know it won't be cheap... Maybe it is better to just buy books already slabbed and graded. Unfortunately most of my books are raw. Sigh.. Decisions decisions!
@RegieCollects
@RegieCollects 6 жыл бұрын
You might need to spend a few minutes calculating the cost of getting the raw books slabbed and graded. If you purchased the books off the racks it may be cheaper to get them cleaned, pressed and graded because the acquisition cost was pennies. Thanks for watching the video too. You may want to check out the one I just posted about bundling books for shipping to CGC or another grading service.

Nice vid..i think its done for an increase in value and the hard case just makes books in ur collection look sexier and ur right about the turnaround times they r ridiculous we need either more grading companies or we need to do something to light a fire under these companies asses because it takes me 3-4 months to get my books back from cgc
@RegieCollects

It's a painfully slow process that has lot of room for improvement. Improvement with turn around times, consistency in grading, etc.

I dont worry about turnaround times...patience is a virtue. The only thing that makes longer turnaround times frustrating is impatience. There usually isnt any actual reason why we need it back sooner, so whats the difference if we are gonna have that book for the next 20 yrs if it takes 1 month or 4 months?? Another good vid!

Plus I can't stress enough the risks on a raw book having say resto on it.. That's why if u buy a raw book let's say and want to slab it make 100% certain to know it's been checked thorough for it before u grade. When I seen ur ASM 300 dude come back a purple I would have had a stroke then give the seller a double stroke lol

Makes me want to move to Florida to get them graded. Problem is I have too many comics. And I stopped buying them in 1998. They are also too picky from what I can tell. Grading staples and corners. What I look for is the middle part. Is it in mint condition . Even if 1 part is bent from I guess finger nails. Cause that's what it looks like I pass and put that in a different box. Unless it's really old and or really expensive then I put that aside.

Great video Regie! I definitely consider buying a book already graded a lot, but I still buy raw a lot too. My problem with buying raw is that a lot of high grade raw copies on eBay go for ridiculous amounts due to bidding wars. For example, I’ve been interested in buying a copy of Nova #1, and I’ve seen 8.5-9.0 graded copies go for $85-$120, and raw copies in that grade are around $50-75. I always get my books pressed and cleaned before sending them in so I definitely have to take that in mind when buying raw.
@RegieCollects
@RegieCollects 6 жыл бұрын
I've basically stopped buying books via auction. I feel like I get emotionally invested and overpay. I stick with best offer or buy it now deals. I don't think I've purchased anything via auction in 6 months or more. Good luck finding that copy of Nova 1.

mike smith The headquarters of the various companies are in Florida, Texas and Oregon. I have collectible insurance on my books so they are covered while in transit. I tend to ship books out to be graded via FexEx overnight to minimize transit time. If I had really expensive books like the one you mentioned, I’d fly down to HQ. Another option would be to hand deliver it to the grading company at a major convention. They will take possession of the book their too. A buddy does that often.

I have built my collection up around 7 long boxes over the last 4 months and I do not yet have any grades comics mostly because I use my budget to simply buy more books and not grade any of them yet though I have some good candidates I plan on getting many grades in the future. Do you think it would be worth it to buy slabs to preserve books that aren’t graded?

Hit the CGC website to evaluates the costs. I typically say it will be $35 to clean/press and grade a book. This is after you obtain a membership. If you’re going to be grading a lot of books I recommend the premium membership because it costs $150 but you get a credit for that amount annually which is enough to grade several books. You also get a 10% discount on grading with this membership. I have a few videos that walk through the process on the channel so try to check those out.
