We have not been getting much snow this winter so I started rooting around and found some footage I overlooked from a big storm we had last March 2015. When it stopped snowing that day, the wind made for some big snow drifts. In one area the drifts were packed so hard that my snow plow would just ride up over the drift and took me quite a few attempts before I was able to break through them. I know a vee plow would have been better for getting through the big drift in the video but, you make due with tools at hand. And it was still faster than going all the way back to the plow shed to change plows. Hope you enjoy and thanks for watching!

Yep, Bring back Memories of when I worked for the state of Iowa Highway Maintenance for 13 years, I moved a lot of snow in those years. You never knew how much snow you were going to get, the weather would call for inches of snow and get missed completely and on the other hand, I seen 8 inches of flurries before. We first had gassers and the big trucks were diesel, Years later we got all diesels. I worked there from 1978 to 1991, the first sand boxes we had were PTO drive, toward later in the 1980s all the trucks had tailgate augers and spinners (Sanders).

I'm wondering why you use that type of low wing plow on the front of your trucks? With the type trucks you run it seems like a high lifting wing plow would be much better. It's what is used here in Michigan and surly we get less snow than you. They lift the snow so high and throw it so far it rarely builds a bank like seen there. Snow is plastered on the trees about 12' up the trunks. These trucks run between 40 and 45 mph and use their grader blade and spread salt all in one pass. I enjoy your plowing videos. It looks like it could be fun, but stressful. I think a novice operator could get in a mess in a hurry with that wing blade on the side. Here the road commission is responsible for replacing all the mail boxes they take out.

I am surprised they do not have some sort of drift buster plow put together that works to build traction for a truck like a 'dozer can get from loading the blade. That plow could just blast through the center where the drifts form and allow the regular plows to open the rest of the lanes? There should also be a way to get the plow to really toss the snow rather than just jamming it up on the roadside, maybe they side plow needs to be more of a throwing device?

Six-wheel drive (6WD or 6×6) is an all-wheel drive drivetrain configuration of three axles with at least two wheels on each axle capable of being driven simultaneously by the vehicle's engine. When it has ten - with two pairs of ganged "dual" wheels on each rear axle as on this Western Star - all are also driven but the 6×6 designation remains.

Ayuh - we swapped sander bodies onto 4 of our oldest dump/plow trucks because they tend to be more reliable & easier to repair than most of the newer trucks. No DPF/DEF/Regen/EGR issues to contend with in the older trucks. And sure enough, those 4 are never down for powertrain/chassis issues; just cutting edges, toe chains on the wing, post cables, and wing struts & brackets a couple times throughout the season. Those trucks with their old CAT engines just keep going and going.

Yep, doesn’t pay a lot considering the skill and trust involved, not to mention the liability. We have 16 plow operators in my municipality and maybe 5 of them are any good, sad to say. The others are a revolving band of idiots (mean but true)...a good operator does his job AND takes care to not destroy his equipment...a bad one may plow well but comes in with something broken half a dozen times a shift. That gets old (and expensive) fast.

I had a friend die because a snow plow driver was plowing to fast and slow came over the plow drivers windshield and killed him sitting in his car at the end of his drive way with the wing of the plow. When I seen that snow come over your windshield that's telling me your driving to fast.

In Jim's defense, he had that truck stopped in the blink of an eye a moment after that one time when he lost his view of the road. And he had already had a clear view before that happened so he knew that no car was in his path. I saw nothing unsafe here.
