Notice the conspicuous sparcity of spontaneous movement displayed by the choir members. It’s.Just.too.fast. You have stripped it of its BEAT. Percussion is way too understated. This is one the coolest songs in existence, and you managed to file down all the ridges and points, and then sing it like you can’t wait for it to be over! Congratulations on eviscerating a song that I thought was somehow immune to such mishandling, but worst of all, depriving these kids of what could have been one of the funnest performances of their choir career, and one they would treasure throughout their lives. My now 30 year old son was so smitten with this song, having performed it in his high school choir’s Christmas concert, (under the baton of his mother, my wife, who just happened to be the director, and who picked the song) - so smitten that he managed to cajole the director of his college choir his freshmen year into adding it to the program for their Christmas concert. They went so far as to bring in the school’s percussion ensemble, who, of course LOVED it, and embraced it to the point that, solely through the repetitions of rehearsal, sort of subconsciously learned the words, picked out a part that was comfortable, and sang along while concentrating on their instrumental part, but by performance time, they were belting it out like that was what they were they were there for, all WHILE doing the accompaniment. So these ‘drummers’ had boosted his vocal power and volume by maybe 20%. This made the director feel like some miracle had occurred, or at least that his teaching skill had been demonstrably proven, but of course, nothing beats the audience jumping to their feet while you’re holding the last note, he gives the cutoff, and as it is his custom, turns around to give a little bow, and being met with thunderous applause, audience out of their seats, hooting, hollering, whistling, gleefully smiling, I mean ... they were all just reveling in it. Lots of people on both sides of the curtain remember that night, I suspect, but I can assure you, my son treasures those performances like few others, and hearing that song, to this day, triggers him like his shot of meth just kicked in, and there’s a couple more that do the same - ‘you are the new day’, and ‘Ile bianco y dolce cigno’ ; both ala King’s Singers - go figure... After all that and the lasting effect on my son - you might better understand why I see and hear this .. and it ... well, it just makes me sad... but a little bit mad, too.
