For those who like some level of realism in fantasy and/or are interested in ideas for historical fiction here is a look at some easy to carry options that would suit a traveler.
The previous video (about arm blades & spiked shields) is related to this, sort of a part 1.

For a character who needs to travel light or just wants to minimize weight and clutter, cumbersome weapons like polearms and large shields are out. The simplest choice that offers good versatility would be a longsword that is light and well balanced enough to be effective with either one or both hands. It's not the most protective though.
What if you want to maximize defensive capabilities at the same time? Here are some combinations that strike a good balance between effectiveness and easy of carry in my opinion.
You'll also find some information about the dynamics of armed martial arts (defensive actions, openings, feints, etc).

In a duel setting yes, in a battle setting not so much. Those large shield are primarily for arrow attack, without that or heavy armour, you will get peppered with arrows.

The best off hand weapon is a pistol, you can parry shot to stun the enemy and then commit a visceral attack with your main hand weapon

Spears were used and carried by travelers for about as long as humans have been humans because they're just a staff with a point and can do everything a staff can do, plus stab better. That includes being a walking stick, supporting not only its own weight, but some of the user's as well. They're also far better for fending off/killing animals. If you were traveling on foot, you carried a spear (if you could afford it, otherwise you were stuck with just a staff). The spear's main disadvantage comes from carrying them in cities, especially indoors, which is where swords become easier to manage. Since all the fancy people lived in cities and carried swords, swords became the famous self-defense weapon. But if you were _expecting_ trouble, like a fantasy adventurer, then it would be worthwhile to carry a sword and buckler as well as a shorter, lighter spear, which you could hold in your off hand (or maybe attach the buckler to it) as with Zulu stick fighting. Then you have options, a walking stick, and a good defense.

In the early 17th century, Joseph Swetnam recommend that people at danger for being robbed travel with spear (staff with a pike in period terms, but what we'd call a spear). However, in a fantasy context, assuming composite bows, carrying one of those in a holster strikes me as an excellent option for an adventurer. As small composite bows can be worn pretty easily & even big ones can still be worn, this even keeps the hands free. The English didn't have access to such a convenient method of carry for bows, though English outlaws did famously use bows.

@@b.h.abbott-motley2427 A sling would be equally effective, and be exponentially less encumbering for both the weapon and the Ammo. Everything can fit in a pouch, leaving room for larger weapons, unlike a bow where even the smallest would require a full sized quiver of some kind. I could see an adventurer having a spear with a crossguard (boar spear) and buckler/klar (Buckler with 1 attached spike on the bottom) for daily use, and a sling and dagger for hunting.

@@littlekong7685 I'm skeptical the sling is as effective as the composite bow. Accuracy is difficult with heavy bows, but even more so with the sling, especially when slinging hard. & sling projectiles aren't usually sharp, so it's considerably more difficult to inflict incapacitating wounds with the sling. (Lead sling projectiles, especially the ones with sharp points, change this dynamic.) There's a reason the sling mostly disappeared from warfare after the 14th century in Europe, & earlier in most of Asia, but composite bows remained prominent in China even into the 20th century. (They were probably only really still effective into the early 19th century.) But yeah, the portability of the sling & its ability to use ammunition from the environment make it a great choice for a traveler who has the necessary skills & conditioning. A powerful slingshot could also be a good option for a convenient ranged weapon for a traveler in a fantasy setting, assuming rubber is available. & if higher density elements are abundant in the setting for some reason, things get even better for the sling & slingshot. Gold shot would be excellent, for example. Note that sling ammo isn't usually lighter than arrows, shot per shot. This depends, but one of the advantage of the sling is that it can hurl very heavy projectiles & hit hard. That's apparently what Spanish slingers did at the Battle of Nájera 1367, perhaps the last large-scale employment of slingers in pitched battle in Western Europe. Froissart wrote they used "large stones."

Having a guige(edited) could make the larger round shields a bit easier to carry around and also protect your back while not being wielded. I think that one large advantage that the larger shield has in comparison to the other off-hand weapons is that it can protect against arrow fire and if you were to go around with light or no armor at all, then i'd say you would absolutely need a large shield to protect yourself against your ranged opponents.

the problem is if the premice is an adventurer that go around on foot, on your back you would already have to carry rations, camping equipment, ecc.

That shield strap is called a guige, its a historical design although more comonly used on heater shields and kite shields.

Honestly, the Scottish Highlander setup is my preferred ideal. Small shield, a decent sword, (especially for defense) and maybe an axe or staff to use as a walking stick as you go. Not to mention the 3 mainstay knives

Personally I think a parrying dagger (with good hand protection) might be better. (specifically because it gives you an advantage to work with against an opponent with a full-sized shield as opposed to a generally worse version of the same loadout) Or use a zulu shield (relatively large, but light weight and doubles as walking stick; you can also put a tip on the detacheable center shaft to make it work as a light spear)

@@vaporz109 dirk at belt. usually a longer blade average 1 foot (30cm) also you have sgian dubh, which is knife that goes in your boot top, usually a smaller dagger about 4-6 inch blade length (10-15cm). the third is a tool/food knife, sort of like modern pocket knives usually only a couple inches long (5-7 cm) carried in a belt pouch or smaller belt sheath or sometimes in a double sheath with the dirk.

There is a major problem with having a shield with a blade on the bottom. Basically it'd just be a constant danger to you, and would also be damaged being carried around. There is a reason people keep swords, knives, and daggers in sheaths or scabbards. It'd be better to just have the chinese shield with the top hook lopped off, then use the off-hand parrying dagger idea.

I really like the blooper intermission and the use of clever editing like the first-person perspective inserts. I know you've been asking a lot of community questions about what kind of content we'd like to see and I really like these speculative history/mixed culture experiments. I would say the only thing that needs work are the thumbnails, less is more and thumbnails that look too clickbaity I tend to ignore- bit this one is good. Keep up the great work!

An adventurer would probably wear the forearm-mounted shield on their forearm as a mark of belonging to an adventurer's guild imo, especially a smaller one that doesn't obstruct the hand too much. Just a cultural signature of sorts probably

Lol that's true. My thing I'd be carrying is a sling with a bag of spiked weights to use. See when it's out of your hands you can say I am unarmed and you aren't lying :) But you have range, power, you need very little skill or strength. Just practice, then soon enough you can knock pigeons out the sky with a well placed slingshot. Works very well even against armour.

@@DailyCorvid historically, someone wasn't considered 'armed' unless they had a helmet. Openly carrying a sword and dagger was normal for anyone with the money to own one. Or whose family at one point in time had acquired one, say as battlefield salvage.

For “travelling light” I’d suggest a one handed axe or a seax because you might need it for other stuff than fighting anyway

Nobody gives adequate attention to the simple sling. With practice you can take out practically anybody who isn't completely armoured over the head and shoulders, or the knees and legs if necessary. That would be my pick, it doesn't even look like a weapon so you can claim to be unarmed. EDIT : Yes it is effective against MOST types of armour, and still good but reduced effectiveness against the proper plate armour guys. They will be aware of this once they see the slingshot - but usually they will be hit once or twice before spotting the opppnent. Keep in mind that the sling is NOT a front assault weapon. It is a weapon of nuance, of stealth. Unless you use specially crafted whistling shots, you make no noise when you fire. You will almost certainly be hiding, stealth mode silent, trying to get a better position to shoot from; but at the same time be as far out of his range as possible. A few good clean shots to the head even with a thick plate helmet is gonna at the LEAST cause a concussion and the dude is gonna drop like a rock hit the floor and be dazed. So you can either go finish the poor sod and take the horse, or if you prefer shoot the horses legs out then run. He's armoured and concussed he ain't chasing :D

@@RichardLeslieWhereat yeah that works too but I have greater faith in spiked caltrop type things instead. That way you do more damage with the same level of swing power. Probably carry maybe 4-5 at most. Then it's either escape or finish the job up close and personal with a nice sharp dagger to the throat... See a good hit with a spiked weight, a good accurate hit will stagger the opponent 100% of the time, and more than likely debilitate for a good few minutes maybe even blind them. Even with heavily armoured opponents the humble sling in the right hands can help keep them at distance whilst you make other arrangements to leave :) So when they're down you can either rush in and make the kill or get yourself away!

The Chinese "hook shield" is actually called “gou-xiang" (钩镶）, not "gou-rang". Glad to see some ancient Chinese weapons being analyzed in a tactical way, which are covered mainly by historians in China. Great video.

Reminder, basket-hilt and regular buckler was common as seen in Silver’s work and was still used in the 18th century as represented by McBane and Miller. Also, it’s cool you have an alehouse dagger.

Do we know that Silver recommended a regular buckler? That strikes me as likely, as those were still around at the time, but what Paul Wagner calls the English buckler also existed & was popular enough that the English version of Giacomo di Grassi's manual featured that in the artwork instead of a regular buckler as appeared in the original. Alehouse daggers seem great; Wagner considers them superior to the regular buckler, & they look about as easy to wear, with the advantage of being a dagger that can stab & cut.

Most of them had detachable heads too, so you could put them on long/medium/short/throwing shafts as required, and if travelling put the heads in a pouch and ditch the shafts, make new ones when you arrived thus saving a ton of weight.

@@littlekong7685 hafted tools are an overall improvement because you could swap handles - but swapping spearheads would take time, effort and tools, they have to fit well and usually strengthened with adhesive and/or wrapping. Still, a broken shaft does not mean a broken weapon.

@@Schmidt54 The time to shape and work a half is a fraction of the time (and expertise) required to fletch a new head, especially when the material is not as common in your area. There is lots of evidence of trade hubs between material sites, crafting sites, and hunting grounds. One theory is that spearheads were a form of early currency, used to pay for other things because they were so valuable (relative to a whole spear).

It always makes me sad how every game miss represents my favorite weapon, the halbert, every game just treats it like a spear that does slashing damage instead of piercing damage, when irl it’s basically ranged grappling.

the go-rang can be designed fold-able, one of the large hook can retract down, and when use it, just slide it up and use some iron pin to pin it down. I think it's a pretty easy and plausible modification for almost any fantasy world setting

Back in college (early 2000s), when I regularly sparred with safety-padded weapons (as my friend believed in padding the weapon instead of the person, which also had the side effect of more realistic weapon weight), I developed a rather odd personal fighting style from his available armaments: scimitar and madu, with the footwork and partial philosophy of a trained fencer mixed with my friend's pragmatic philosophy in general weapons combat. The madu was my off-hand weapon that I used mostly defensively (much like how Skall uses the gou-rang here), but it also allowed for quick, sudden strikes from a distance (using the "lower" point) or in close quarters (using the "higher" point). My friend's philosophy in fighting was to minimize every move you make - especially in defense - something that Skall touches on while talking about the gou-rang in the video. He would tilt a longsword or greatsword just enough to cause an incoming weapon to get deflected, then strike quickly but powerfully, like a snake. Or, if you let your guard down even in just your posture, he'd just go for a kill shot (or feint-and-strike to get you defending the wrong way) and end the match before it even began. Taught me some hard lessons when I first started sparring with him. It helped that he was physically stronger and more trained than anyone else in the group, including myself :) Speaking of the gou-rang: seeing one makes me think that maybe I should have looked into that as my off-hand weapon, though I'm not sure that my friend could have made the hooks, and his madu was already more of a double-ended short spear than a buckler/twin point thing. Getting a good curve on the scimitar without going too far was hard enough for him as it was. EDIT: Minor phrasing changes, grammar

I think that your best *melee* option as an unarmoured (or lightly armored) "adventurer" type might be soethign similar to Nguni/Zulu type cowhide shields (with the stick attached) Even the large shields do not weigh much (as they are thin) and the center staff allows it to be used as a walking stick, limiting the burden of the shield. (and a walking stick is valuable if you're staying outdoors) Combine that with one-handed axe (doubles as tool) and a long cut&thrust dagger. (doubles as tool) that seems like an ideal balance between encumbrance and protection; every weapon you carry covers for an indispensable tool (walking stick, knife, hatchet are all covered for, reducing necessary encumbrance) and your potential lack of armor isn't as crippling of a problem because you have a big shield (even if not the strongest) and you can also do a smaller (sturdier) shield with the same sized parrying stick to still have rather good protection (long parrying stick and a buckler attached to each other) with even less problems when carrying. edit: I like that you mentioned this weapon combination as well, I feel like African weaponry is somewhat underappreciated but it is incredibly interesting because it shows how warfare develops in places with incredibly limited resources. If we do want a ranged weapon ; probably bow&arrow (with little enough poundage and size to be a useful hunting tool) combined with a 1h sword and parrying dagger; sword&dagger is quite a strong combination that helps even the odds against a shielded opponent while being easy to carry and access. So your bow is a useful survival tool (parrying dagger can also replace a knife if it can cut well) so again you minimise your necessary encumbrance.

Watching this made me think about how effective the Klingon bat'leth would be. It's almost a hybrid of a shield and an offensive weapon. You could hook your enemies weapon or shield, limb and the shape of the blade would be perfect for punching through armor.

Now I understand The Lantern shield (The one that looks like a spaceship lol). The practicality agains heavy armored and unarmored is almost equal since the dagger killed more knights than any weapon. Nice job thank you, now I have a Good set up of weapon for any mercenary or a Lone wolf type of character.

I love the "If you were out adventuring in a Medieval/Fantasy setting?" Question. It took me a lot of trial, and eror to decide on a Pole-Hammer, Chinquedea, and Buckler. It would be nice to have a full-sized shield, but I tried that. Carrying a full-sized shield with a Pole-Hammer. (Basically everything I need on 1 handle.) Okay, sling on your back. Now, put down the pole-arm to get your shield out. The cold steel soldier's "Targe" is about right: A large buckler, won't stop all the slings, arrows, and crossbow bolts, but it doesn't get in the way of EVERYTHING else I have to carry. (Also assuming I'm on foot, because IDK how to deal with a Horse. I can put a shoe on one, with a full ferrier's stall, and a horse handler to handle a horse, but this is ME in this setting, and IDK how to handle a horse. Maybe a Mastiff to carry stuff, but that's not large enough for a Pavis either.)

Ideally if I can re-write my Character Sheet from the beginning, I'm going to say a Frankish Ax, because I could learn to throw it. (I can throw my Chinquedea, but then I don't have it for close quarters.) Some sort of Range that works with everything else. An Angon/Pilum, or a brace of Plumbata are a little too bulky, but I can handle a brace of Plumbata. The barbs are a little tricky to get out, but as a tertiary, throw in a couple heavy darts. Sometimes you don't want to go over there, and chasing a rabbit with a hammer is a losing proposition.
