Over-Thinking the Switch Axe: Could it Work? (Monster Hunter in Real Life)

Among the many hilariously over-the-top fantasy designs in the Monster Hunter series the transforming shenanigans stand out in particular. A weapon that can mechanically change between sword and axe mode? Pretty handy, eh?
Could something this extravagant work in the real world, with some simplification? I think it could, although it would have some weaknesses compared to a conventional longsword and two-handed axe or polearm. So let's delve into the hypotheticals...
Special thanks to BaneNZ for coming up with a good locking mechanism and Ace the Super Villain for designing and animating the 3D models. You can check out his other work here:

Being an engineer myself, I have a few comments: - Since the cut-out merely serves as a guidance to the axe-head, one could replace it in several ways that do not compromise the strength of the blade. A fuller that does not go through would be one example. Another one would be just shaping the axe head so that it rests on the "extended bevel" without touching the actual edge would be another option. - This way, one could just have a single hole in the middle of the blade where the axe head sits and a spring-loaded pin on the axe head locking it in place. With a slight 'inverse taper' where the axe head should stop, one could even make the axe head fit tightly in axe mode, so it does not rattle.
@acethesupervillain348
@acethesupervillain348 2 жыл бұрын
The cut-out is necessary to fit the BaneNZ locking mechanism, as you push the button from the top to clear the sword from the bottom. With this mechanism in particular, we felt like we should present a very big and beefy lock to prevent it from shaking loose from impacts.
@climbscience4813
@climbscience4813 2 жыл бұрын
@@acethesupervillain348 I think the locking mechanism as shown is consistent. I just think that one could do without the cut-out with a spring-loaded pin instead and a single hole of the cut-out. This just has other pros and cons I guess.
@fitzeflinger
@fitzeflinger 2 жыл бұрын
i had the same idea! a springloaded pin/bolt or a turning-bolt mechanism with only one hole each at the top and the bottom of the blade for the pin to jump in. two fixating pins would be even better i think, it would reduce the stress on the slider/fuller, which otherwise could get damaged and tilted through impact to the point where it won't slide anymore. but the challenge then is how to get two pins to be pushed with a simple and fast hand motion.

I was thinking that myself. Use a regular blade. Use a screw like with a C clamp to hold the ax head in place. Put wood inserts on the ax head to protect the sword blade.

I'm curious how helpful following the in-game 3-part design might be. You could probably figure out the geometry such that the axe head sliding up and down would lever on the blade tip to pull it in and back, keeping the hinges all together. It'd allow for all the locking mechanisms to be nearer the hilt as well. Of course, I totally agree with you that you'd want channels or grooves rather than a full slot.

@@Skallagrim True but still it does completely throw the whole "more damage with sword mode" argument out the window as the Axe does do significantly more damage per hit unless you wild swing of course. 4:47, actually, The sword swings themselves ARE faster than the axe swings, but the actual movement isnt, I'd assume its to sort of emulate a stance where the user has to be more "grounded", so probably not an oversight
@jo54763
@jo54763 2 жыл бұрын
The way I always imagined why the movement is different is because the axe mode swings are wide and the hunter has to move for a good amount of the attacks, following through with the momentum of the swing. The hunter moves faster because they use the axe head's momentum after a swing to reposition themselves. As for the sword, there is less inertia at a point that's further away from the body, so it's hard to create momentum that can be used to move oneself. The hunter can swing faster but can't use their swings to reposition at all, aside from by moving their legs.

no wonder they call it an elemental discharge, its esentially a weapon that builds up excess energy on porpouse just to dish out an very well calculated release of energy, like when in upped stated we see the blade of the weapon glow with the heat of the energy which one will argue that this isnt good for the longevity of the weapon but then again all energy weapons in the game need constant sharpening which is just a simplifyed portray of maintainance procedure so its not a weapon that is made to be abused and if you do, not only you will have a crappy edge but you will also have to get stuck in place fixing the energy phial system of the weapon. the fact that in that world they maneged to creat such weapon is amazing, more than that is the fact that the ones in game are actually replicas since the energy weapons are all made from reverse engenieered technology from a civilization that fell appart.

Another combo weapon of sorts I've been thinking about is making the scabbard of a sword into a weapon on it's own. Fashion a hardwood scabbard that's a little thicker than usual and comes equipped with a mace head or hammer head near the opening of the scabbard. That way you'll be carrying the head of the scabbard weapon in your belt, not entirely unlike the way you'd normally carry some axes or hammers. But you'd also have a sword at the ready. Might even be able to cut a groove into the axe head or hammer head which the guard of the sword fits neatly into on the top.
@jooot_6850
@jooot_6850 2 жыл бұрын
huh. Neat concept. I like it. You could even make the scabbard completely metal, so it's like a hollow mace, almost. That, or put reinforcing langets that go through the whole length of the thing, like a steel basket shell
@widdershins5383
@widdershins5383 2 жыл бұрын
Turn the sheath into a club by weighting the end so when you grab it by the top to remove the sword you just gotta spin it around, easily done by sheathing then end in hard metal part way, or in strips all the way up and down to be able to block as well as attack without damaging it...too much? Depends on how much metal playing you’d use I suppose Edit: you’d use the club head under the sword hilt, I’d use it at the other end, same concept
@sevenproxies4255
@sevenproxies4255 2 жыл бұрын
@@widdershins5383 The reason I want the club head under the sword hilt rather than at the bottom of the scabbard is because if you hang a big metal weight to the end of the scabbard, you'll have it bang against your leg every time you walk. Also the metal weight will drag the end of the scabbard towards the ground so your sword handle will always point straight up rather than at an angle, making it more natural to draw.

fun fact: in the 1400's with the introduction of early matchlock firearms to the rest of europe from asia, there were some innovative combo weapons that incorporated both the gun and the blade. I once stumbled across a reproduction of a great mace with a flip top spike lid. undo the catch, top flips open to reveal 4 barrels, near the bottom of the mace head were 4 slide leafs that covered the flash pan holes for the guns. Early gun play and combat tactics being what they were, the wielder was intended to ram the side spikes of the mace head into a a wooden sil, uncover the barrels, touch the match wick to the flash pan in succession (rotate, ram, uncover, fire, repeat) until all shots were fired, button up the top spike cap on the mace, and then proceed to bludgeon to death whomever survived the initial volley. it wasn't practical in the slightest, but was an effective mace with the feature of being able to fire projectiles at high velocity. that being said, sword pommels were already mini mace heads in antiquity to begin with (in addition to being the counterbalance to the sword blade) I have a celtic leaf blade with a flat bronze pommel that looks like pac-man. it's purely ornamental, but in a fight it would double as a two pronged bludgeon on a successful downward fist strike. Itialian Master Fiore dei Liberi's "Fior di Battaglia" (the flower of battle) written in the late 1300's, contained examples of using the pommel of a sword as a mace by grasping the blade in a specific manner and swinging the hilt towards an opponents head. I've only seen the technique successfully reproduced once in the modern times, by a pair of re-enactors in full plate armor going at full speed....the "clang" as the pommel hit the other fighters helm was epic.

Btw Skall, I have something to tell you... When I first started watching videos of you a few years ago I had the feeling you reminded me of someone but I couldn't figure out who, until recently when I started re-watching Black Sails and it hit me, you reminded me of Captain Flint! Just wanted to get it off my chest, have a good day.
